'Turtle' in Footville destroyed in suspected arson
FOOTVILLE A fire that burned a turtle-shaped piece of playground equipment is an arson case for the Rock County Sheriff's Office.
The fire started Sunday morning on the playground of Footville Elementary School.
Parkview School District Superintendent Steve Lutzke said he was coming out of church Sunday around 9:15 a.m. when he saw smoke in the direction of the school.
Lutzke went to the scene, called 911, and the Footville Fire Department put the fire out, he said.
There was no lightning or any other indication of an accidental cause, so the suspicion is that someone deliberately set the fire, Lutzke said.
"It definitely was peculiar," but not a major news event, Lutzke said.
The loss was estimated at $1,300, according to a sheriff's office report.
The burned plastic turtle and wood chips have been removed and the spot covered with bark, Lutzke said.
"Over the summer we'll figure out what to do about it," he added.
The sheriff's office reports a deputy canvassed the neighborhood but could find no one who saw anyone in the area of the playground that morning.
