MADISON Wisconsin Republicans are hoping that having a native son on the Tuesday’s presidential ticket will help deliver the state to their White House pick for the first time since Ronald Reagan’s 1984 landslide re-election.
But even with U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Janesville as Mitt Romney’s running mate, President Barack Obama isn’t conceding Wisconsin or its 10 electoral votes. Obama won the state by 14 points in 2008, but polls show this year’s race is close.
The state’s U.S. Senate race between Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin and longtime former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson is even closer. They are vying to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl, and the more than $65 million spent on the race has made it the most expensive U.S. Senate race in state history.
Voters also will choose all eight Wisconsin members of U.S. House, all 99 members of the state Assembly and half of the state Senate.
Ryan cast his ballot in Janesville early Tuesday and was asked whether he and running mate Mitt Romney would win the election.
“I think we are. I feel good about it,” said Ryan, who voted with his wife, Janna Ryan, at a local library. Their three children, Liza, Sam and Charlie, watched as their parents cast their votes.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who lives in Kenosha County, said he voted at a polling place in Somers and felt good about what GOP campaign workers have been able to accomplish.
“We have done, I think, the Romney campaign, the volunteers here and across the Midwest I think just an incredible job of party ID, getting out the vote, identifying who your voters are and then using the technology, the manpower and the people to get the job done and find these folks a way to get to the polls,” Priebus told WISN-AM in Milwaukee.
Ron Perkins, a 66-year-old insurance agent from Sun Prairie, said he voted for Romney. He said his son convinced him to vote for Obama four years ago, and that the president hasn’t lived up to his expectations.
“He was a better speaker than a leader,” Perkins said.
Cari Herling, who is also a Sun Prairie insurance agent, said she voted for Obama, just as she did four years ago.
“I just feel (Obama) has such integrity. I trust him,” said Herling, 44. “I don’t think Romney understands people who are down and out. ... I believe (the problems of) the last four years weren’t just Obama. I believe Obama walked into a mess.”
Wisconsin was among a shrinking number of battleground states in the waning weeks of the campaign, leading to multiple visits by the candidates and their surrogates. Obama visited Wisconsin three times in the five days before the election, even bringing rock ‘n’ roll star Bruce Springsteen on Monday, while Ryan tailgated with Green Bay Packers fans Sunday and stopped in Milwaukee on Monday night.
Obama was expected to do well in the Democratic stronghold areas of Madison and Milwaukee, while Romney should rack up votes in the suburban counties around Milwaukee. The race could come down to who does best in swing parts of the state, such as the Green Bay and Fox Valley regions.
The only other statewide race is for Kohl’s U.S. Senate seat, which Democrats have held since 1957. Should Thompson win, Wisconsin would be represented by two Republicans in the Senate for the first time since 1957.
With temperatures in the 30s and light flurries falling, 34-year-old warehouse clerk Chris Pfeifer emerged from his Madison polling station inside a library that’s part of a suburban strip mall. Pfeifer voted for Baldwin.
“She’s been a really good representative for the district,” Pfeifer said. “I think Tommy’s had his chance already.”
Pfeifer described the Senate campaign as “vicious” and said he was glad it was over.
Dave Zeman, a 60-year-old doctor from Madison, voted for Thompson, saying he agreed more with his policies than with Baldwin’s.
“I do think his ad is pretty close, that Tammy Baldwin is arguably more liberal than Nancy Pelosi,” Zeman said, referring to one of the numerous attack ads in the race attempting to label Baldwin as a liberal extremist.
Even though he’s the GOP vice presidential candidate, Ryan is seeking re-election to the U.S. House seat he’s won seven straight times since 1998. Ryan is being challenged by Democrat Rob Zerban, but should he win both races, he would have to give up his congressional seat.
Ryan is one of five Republicans representing Wisconsin in Congress, and two of them — Reps. Sean Duffy in the 7th District and Reid Ribble in the 8th District — face credible challenges from Democrats. The other incumbents are expected to easily win re-election.
Baldwin gave up her U.S. House seat to run for Senate, and Democratic state Rep. Mark Pocan is widely expected to with the district, which covers the liberal capital city of Madison and surrounding area.
In the Legislature, Republicans hope to erase the slim Democratic majority in the Wisconsin Senate won after recall elections earlier this year. Democrats hold a 17-15 majority with one vacancy in a Republican district. Of the 16 seats to be elected Tuesday, only six are currently held by Republicans. Of the 10 seats held by Democrats, two incumbents are viewed as vulnerable. Republicans are also eyeing an open seat currently held by a Democrat who is retiring.
The margin is much wider in the Assembly, where Republicans hold a 59-39-1 edge going into Election Day and are not expected to lose the majority.
Associated Press writers Todd Richmond in Sun Prairie, Philip Elliot in Janesville and Gretchen Ehlke in Milwaukee contributed to this report.

I'll be honest, I liked Tommy Thompson as Governor. Since leaving and moving into lobbying, then embracing the far right rhetoric, I'm glad he wasn't elected to the Senate. He was a far better Governor than Scott Walker is, that's the Tommy Thompson we needed to see.
I believe he lost because of that.

So because the story is partially rated "true", you don't mind the fact that to fund the program, Obama CUT from other student programs. He eliminated the in-school interest benefit on subsidized Stafford loans for graduate students. He also eliminated allowing students to get additional Pell grants for summer enrollment.
The Pell grants are paid for with these cuts through 2014 with funds from cuts to other programs. The temporary (mandatory funding)pool are set to be used up in 2014. The CBO has said that the funding needs will increase by $8 BILLION in 2014. They expect that by the year 2022, the funding needs will be increased by $58 BILLION over the funding that is provided.
Nothing more than a political shell game by Obama to ingratiate himself with students for their votes.
By the way, society does NOT owe everyone a college education. Do what many of us have done...work while you go to school and pay for it yourself.
Do some more research and use other sources instead of CNN, who has taken HALF of the facts on the Pell programs and created a nice article for Obama.

Obama’s claim he doubled Pell Grant funding is entirely false
"The graphic deceptively fails to mention that not only did President Obama not double funding for Pell grants last year, he cut funding and would have made deeper cuts had Congress passed his 2011 budget.
Beginning July 1, thousands of college students will no longer be eligible for Pell Grants. The changes are a result of a a $1 trillion spending bill passed overwhelmingly by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in December 2011 that funds the government through September 2012. The bill, which Obama signed, actually cut Pell Grants by $11 billion dollars over the next decade."

We also need a president that does not cultivate a dependence on government assistance but rather creates an environment that encourages and enables businesses to create good paying jobs. If that happens you do not get saddled with increasing taxes to keep paying for more government handouts.

Although I never vote straight party ticket, and have historically voted for candidates of both parties on election day, I am still undecided (mere hours before I plan to vote). I'm bothered by the fact that while both candidates speak frequently about the "middle class" neither one had specified who exactly that is. For me that is a crucial point. Obama talks big support for the middle class, but last year my husband and I had to pay in what I consider to be a significant amount on our federal taxes. We both had the max withheld all year, and still got a hefty bill. We lost some deductions while Obama was in office, although I can't say for sure that was his doing because I don't really know when those tax laws were changed. Somehow we still got a refund from the state. We certainly do not make $250k a year. On top of that, we had to make our health care sections for next year and saw HUGE increases in costs. Just to kick us while we're down, the max amount we can contribute to our flex account next year is $2500, reduced from NO LIMIT in past years (although most employers limited it to $5k a year). The $2500 limit was part of Obama's health care plan. How does that help middle class families? So if I can afford to put more than $2500 in a flex spending account, he assumed I can afford to pay taxes on those dollars? I think if either candidate had specifically stated what income amount they consider to be middle class, a lot of people would be pretty surprised. Unfortunately for me, based on how the last 4 years have gone I think Obama considers me above middle class. I feel like my husband and I are being punished for getting an education (which we're still paying for) and good jobs. I've never voted for a republican for president, but I'm not sure that I can personally afford to vote for a democrat this time around.

Why_Think -- nice narative.. Too bad you dont know what you are talking about and now - neither do your children.
The reality is -- when you increase taxes, and its been shown over and over and over again (because the dems wont give it up), revenues drop. Why??? That encourages people to find other places for their money, their wealth. Why risk your wealth - and financial security in a system that will eventually just take it away. Then there is the loss of velocity of the money/wealth. The government is now in between and is HIGHLY inefficient at best. So not only is every $$ collected not directed on a 1:1 basis, it skims a %% off the top to fund the very organization it created.
When taxes are lowered -- once again proven -- revenues rise -- unfortunately revenues have not risen under Obama because they have been siphoned off to meet increased regulations or have been stockpiled due to uncertainty by the very government that wants to see the growth. It goes back to the same old saying for democrats:
If it moves fast -- tax it
If it keeps moving - regulate it
If it stops moving - subsidize it
The dems failed to pay attention when in their economics class..... The simple halloween candy experiement says it all -- when you take candy from one kids basket to give to another -- he doesnt understand why he should give his hard earned work for said candy. However, if you encourage him to give candy by offering a nickle for each pc he gives away -- watch the candy flow.

I made up my mind to vote for President Obama months ago. The other day my kids asked me who I would be voting for and why. I tend to lean left so I didn’t find the decision to support the president difficult but trying to explain why to children is difficult.
.
I summed up the taxes, economy issue like this, and this probably was a defining issue for me… I have a major problem with a party that signs a pledge to on person when they are suppose to represent the entire country. To sign a pledge to not raise taxes and then, during a primary refuse a 10/1 cuts to revenue option is unacceptable. Not because I lean left; I am NOT a socialist. The reason I can not accept that is without knowing the details how can that be taken off the table.
.
Then, I watched the same people that turned down 10/1 run a campaign accusing the president of not “working across party lines”.
.
I am sorry, but I continue to have a problem with the party I supported in 2000 supporting continued tax cuts for those making $250k and more while we are putting two wars on the credit card. The middle and working class is largely responsible for the sacrifice of sending their sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers into battle those making $250k and more could be asked to sacrifice and afford to sacrifice financially.
.
Lastly, President Obama took over an 0-16 economy. After 4 years we have an 8-8 economy. For me, that is deserving of a contract extension.
.
I hope everyone votes and when this is done both sides are willing to, for ONCE, put politics aside and get things done for the American people. No more pledges or promises just work together to find solutions you can live with, not that you love, but that you can live with, that will in fact, move this country, FORWARD!

Thank you, President Obama for your many achievements, despite strong Republican obstructions:
+ Led the killing of Osama Bin Laden.
+ Improved US relationships with most allies.
+ Directed killing of several leaders of Al Qaida.
+ Implemented harsh sanctions on Iran.
+ Brought together coalition to remove dictator Gaddhafi from power in Libya.
+ Implemented Obamacare to provide healthcare for millions of people who previously did not have health coverage, and to mandate several health cost-cutting measures.
+ Ended the discriminatory Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy in the military.
+ Supports same-sex marriage.
+ Supports the equal pay act to provide equal pay for women and men.
+ Led the nation out of worst recession (gotten into by Bush) in many decades.
+ Implemented stimulus act to revive economy.
+ Ended war in Iraq, an unnecessary and unbudgeted war started by George W Bush.
+ Began drawdown of war in Afghanistan.
+ Passed necessary Wall Street reform to prevent future financial collapse.
+ Helped turn around auto industry.
+ And, much, much more!
FORWARD! with Obama-Biden!
Not back to the Bush years!
