UW-W women open NCAA soccer tourney Friday
WHITEWATER The UW-Whitewater women's soccer team (15-4-1) opens play in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament against Wittenberg University (11-4-3) at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., at 1:30 p.m., Friday.
The Warhawks are coming off their third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship. UW-W shared the title in 2010, but won it outright in 2011 and this fall. Whitewater and first-year coach Ryan Quamme earned an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament by defeating UW-Stevens Point, 1-0, for the WIAC Tournament title.
UW-Whitewater made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament last year. The Warhawks defeated Aurora University 2-0 in the first round and topped Wartburg College 6-5 in the regional final to advance to the sweet sixteen. UW-W lost to Wheaton 4-1 in the sectional round.
