Walker confident he's clear in probe
Photo
MADISON Gov. Scott Walker said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press that he remains "absolutely" confident that he is not a subject of a criminal investigation involving former aides in his Milwaukee County office.
Walker, speaking to the AP at his Capitol office, said none of the emails or other evidence revealed by prosecutors for the first time in court last week during the sentencing of his former deputy chief of staff suggest that he's a target of the investigation.
Walker also said he had no knowledge of anyone in his Milwaukee County executive's office doing illegal campaign work and if he had, he would have stopped it.
Walker has not been charged with anything in the secret probe, known as a "John Doe" investigation, by the Milwaukee County district attorney's office. Six people have been charged on counts ranging from exceeding campaign contribution limits to theft. Four have been convicted, including Kelly Rindfleisch, Walker's former county deputy chief-of-staff.
Walker has maintained from the beginning that he was not the center of the investigation, and he said Monday that nothing revealed in last week's hearing, in which Rindfleisch was sentenced to six months in jail for misconduct in office, makes him believe otherwise.
"Absolutely," Walker said when asked if he was confident he was not the subject of an investigation.
Prosecutors revealed emails that showed Rindfleisch and other members of Walker's county executive staff were in regular contact with people running Walker's 2010 gubernatorial campaign. The emails showed they held daily telephone meetings, discussed how to handle politically sensitive topics and even suggested planting stories in the press to distract attention from problems at Milwaukee County's mental health hospital, where nine people have died since 2010.
Democrats have said the emails show that Walker was involved in illegal campaigning.
Walker on Monday described the contacts as routine.
The morning phone calls were about coordinating staffing and scheduling issues between the campaign and county office and discussing how to handle questions from the media, Walker said.
"Often times there's not a distinction between asking a political question in the official office and the campaign office," he said. "All those things are things that need to be coordinated. There's nothing wrong with that."
Walker said he had built a firewall to ensure county workers were not ordered to do campaign work while on county time. He said he didn't know about the things Rindfleisch did that resulted in her being charged with misconduct in office, including working on Republican Brett Davis' 2010 lieutenant governor campaign on county time using a secret email system.
"If I had known about that, we would take taken action," he said.
Walker served eight years as Milwaukee County executive until he was elected governor in November 2010. Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm, a Democrat, launched the probe into the county office in May 2010, some six months before the election.
Walker, who survived a June recall election, said he is busy working on putting together the next state budget and is not looking ahead to a potential run for the presidency in 2016. He and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the GOP vice presidential nominee this year, have both been mentioned as possible candidates in four years.
"I've worked far too hard to become the governor and governor again to worry about anything else after that," Walker said. "I'm just not thinking about it. After two elections in less than two years, I'm just happy being governor, still being governor."
Walker said he has talked with Ryan, who lives in Janesville, but not about running for president.
"I've talked to him about pheasant hunting, I've talked to him about going to Mass, I've talked to him about things in Janesville, but I haven't talked with him about anything presidential," Walker said.

RetiredAirForce, you apparently did not read why California's poverty rate, using the new supplemental metric put into effect by the Obama administration, is higher than the traditional poverty metric which was based on food prices.
As University of Wisconsin-Madison economist Timothy Smeeding is quoted in the article you cited, "As a whole, the safety net is holding many people up, while California is struggling more because it's relatively harder there to qualify for food stamps and other benefits." [ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-... ]
Did you catch that? "...it's relatively harder there to qualify for food stamps and other benefits." Oh, those lunatic fringe policies of the left wing you complain about so loudly that are turning the safety net into a hammock. Now what's your explanation for the strict qualification rules for benefits in the land of lunatic fringe left wing lapdog liberalism that result in their poverty rate being so high? The statistics you so happily now cite in an attempt to discredit liberals only prove your previous statement about safety nets and hammocks irrelevant. Your very own data contradicts your prior position when you said, "These were designed to be safety nets not hammocks. The system needs a protection mechanism for those in need to help them out so they can get back out on their own. Not a system that allows people to subside in the programs for years and decades."
You should be applauding California for following your advice that the system not allow "people to subside in the programs for years and decades." That was, after all, YOUR suggestion. You own the suggestion, you own the results. Congratulations.

Trying to figure out the reasoning behind your silly point about more deaths in Aghanistan under Obama? What are you suggesting(posting Beitbart as a source makes you look bad) that troops dont fight as hard for Obaa? Is the strategy of the Generals on the ground making the boys less safe because of Obama? Please clarify.
I also like how we shouldnt "blame" Bush for Iraq, who sould we blame? Because we should blame someone shouldn't we? You are screaming about lack of leadership and clarity aboput Benghazi(rightfully so) and yet tell us to forget Iraq. A war that cost us thousands of our best, and created a whole new generation of terrorists. How shallow are you?
Wondering where your outrage was for:

2004: U.S. Embassy Bombed In Uzbekistan
2004: Gunmen Stormed U.S. Consulate In Saudi Arabia
Three of the attackers were killed. Five non-American employees were killed, an American embassy spokesman, Carol Kalin, told Reuters. She declined to provide the nationality of those killed, but said they were members of the consulate staff.
2006: Armed Men Attacked U.S. Embassy In Syria
2008: Ten People Killed In Bombings At U.S. Embassy In Yemen.
Where was the leadership? Maybe its noyt a partisan problem, a Bush problem, or ebven an Obama problem. Maybe its an American problem. Our policy has 200 bases all over the world, for what? We think we can do whatever we want , wherever we want to do it. I say it has to stop. We are not "protecting freedom" we are playing world cop and we dont have the right to do so.

Get off the "blame Bush" rant. Obama needs to start to lead, he had the first 4 years of training, hopefully the apprenticeship has taught him something.
Media Ignores Increased Deaths, Casualties in Afghanistan Under Obama
What is more striking, though, is more U.S. soldiers have been killed and wounded during President Barack Obama’s first term in office than former President George W. Bush’s two terms. And the anti-war mainstream media that regularly counted the number of deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan under Bush, for the most part, has been silent on the number of deaths and casualties that have resulted under Obama.
Under former President George W. Bush, 575 American soldiers died and fewer than 3,000 were wounded in Afghanistan. This means under Obama, at least 1,405 soldiers have died and nearly 15,000 additional soldiers have been wounded, which means 70% of the deaths and nearly 80% of the injuries in Afghanistan have occurred under Obama’s watch.
In 2010, Obama sent 33,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan as part of the “surge,” and Americans have been received with more hostility with each passing day. In June, Obama announced he would accelerate the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, and America would transfer security duties to the Afghans in 2014.

Colin Powell and the drawings of mobile weapons labs and etc, etc, etc.....These lies cost us THOUSANDS of lives, trillions of dollars and you people want impeachment because of Benghazi? I think the handling of Benghazi was terrible. To call this a watergate style coverup after just living through a decade of unfunded , truly unwarranted wars brought upon us by an administration that was hell bent on War? YOu must spare me that outrage, it is as stupid as it is sad.
I would say that if you stand for impeachment of Obama for Benghazi, you should stand for War Crimes trials for Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Rummsfeld. They are all war criminals and should be held accountable for the 5,000 plus American soldiers that died in Iraq. Anything less is an insult to the men and women who died fighting in that atrocity of a war.

As even your selectively edited portion of my quote("After investigating for almost 3 years, considering the fact that Walker has had to have well over a hundred associates, staffers, aides in his roles in Milwaukee County and as the Governor of Wisconsin") pointed out, I thought I was really clear in mentioning associates, staffers and aides as being included as part of Walker's circle.
I would have thought that you understood this since people like Gardner who I thought was president and chief executive officer of Wisconsin & Southern Railroad Co--but apparently you think was employed by Milwaukee County as one of Walker's staff when mentioning "6 of 7 staff are crooks"?
You know.....don't bother answering my initial question. I think I already have the answer:)

bro......Really? After investigating for almost 3 years, considering the fact that Walker has had to have well over a hundred associates, staffers, aides in his roles in Milwaukee County and as the Governor of Wisconsin, we have a total of 6 people brought up on charges. Of those 6, 2 were completely unrelated to the day to day operations in offices under Walker's oversight. Of the four left, one was charged off as a simple misdemeanor. You're left with 3 people, out of the dozens upon dozens that Walker worked with in Milwaukee County and many more than that that he now works with though the Governor's office at the state level. Quite the culture of corruption that has been exposed.......not! Keep trying though--your arguments are amusing if nothing else:)

GM venture in China plans $1 billion auto plant
By By KELVIN CHAN
AP Business Writer / November 29, 2012
HONG KONG (AP) — General Motors Co. and its joint venture partners in China say they will spend 6.6 billion yuan ($1 billion) to build a third car plant to keep up with demand for vehicles in the world’s biggest auto market.
The SAIC-GM-Wuling venture said the first phase of the factory will open in 2015.
The plant will be capable of turning out 400,000 vehicles and engines a year. It will help the joint venture reach its goal of producing 2 million vehicles a year in China by 2015. The company said Wednesday it wouldn’t decide which models to make until closer to the start of production.
The new factory will be in Chongqing city in central Sichuan province. The venture’s other two plants are located in Liuzhou in southern Guangxi region and Qingdao, on China’s northeastern coast.
China has been the world’s biggest auto market by vehicles sold since 2009, when it surpassed the United States. Some 18.5 million vehicles were sold in China last year and automakers expect the number to rise to 30 million by 2020. Foreign automakers have been expanding in China to offset flat or declining growth at home.
But slowing sales growth in China is prompting global automakers to look for new ways to tap the faster-growing low end of the market in smaller cities and the countryside.
SAIC-GM-Wuling is benefiting as rising incomes in those areas drive demand for the mini-trucks and microvans that it’s focused on making. The venture has sold 1.31 million vehicles in China so far this year, compared with 1.28 million for all of 2011.
The joint venture, which also makes cars under GM’s only-in-China discount line Baojun, last week opened a $1.3 billion factory at its Lizhou facility to make cars for that brand.
Shanghai-based SAIC Motor Corp. owns 50.1 percent of SAIC-GM-Wuling, while GM China owns 44 percent and Liuzhou-based Wuling Motors owns 5.9 percent.
The joint venture is one of several GM has in China, where foreign carmakers are required to team up with local partners. The company’s Chinese brands include Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Opel as well as Jiefang and Wuling.

"The Government Accountability Board wouldn't comment but referred us to its summary of the law on legal defense funds for elected officials. That summary seemed to say the only way the governor could set up a defense fund was if he was the target of an investigation.
George Dunst, who worked as legal counsel for the Wisconsin Elections Board and the GAB for about 20 years, said otherwise.
"It is possible that it's an agent of his campaign being investigated, at least that's what the statute lays out," Dunst said.
He points out the law also allows for a fund if a dependent or a staff worker's dependent is being investigated."

There is no evidence right now that he has any interest in the real fiscal issue because he would have to talk about spending and entitlements and he isn’t.

********************************************
report on state finances next week.
Employee reaction
Union members realize they're not immune from bigger economic forces but would like to see private contractors who do business with the state to make similar concessions, said Bryan Kennedy, president of the American Federation of Teachers-Wisconsin.
"The state should assure that no contracting of work performed by state employees can take place while there is a hiring freeze or layoffs of state employees," Kennedy said.
Pocan, who leads the Joint Finance Committee with Sen. Mark Miller (D-Monona), called the crisis "the economic version of a natural disaster."
Pocan said lawmakers will look at other ways to fill the deeper budget hole.
"We'll figure out the best way we can protect working families as we move forward," Pocan said.
New tax and fee increases must be considered because leaving them out of the discussion would be "intellectually dishonest," Pocan added.
Pocan said the budget committee will keep its goal of sending a budget to the full Legislature by the end of May.
Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker (D-Weston) said in a statement that although deep cuts will be required going forward, job creation programs and programs that help low-income residents must be maintained.
Doyle and Decker both said they would give up pay equivalent to the 16 days of unpaid leave required of state workers, which comes to about $4,200 a year for Doyle and $1,500 a year for Decker.
State employees in Milwaukee had different reactions to the plan to cut their pay.
Erna Willis, a 65-year-old Department of Corrections worker, said she was somewhat shocked by the news because of cuts the agency absorbed several years ago.
She said it would be easier for some state workers to absorb the hit and a hardship for others. But union members have it better than non-workers for private businesses, she added.
"My heart breaks for those people losing their jobs," Willis said.
Wiley Vivians, 56, an employee for the Department of Revenue, wondered whether the union has any choice but to accept the concessions.
"A job is better than no job," Vivians said. "There's a lot of other workers out there with no recourse. I feel for them."
Jesse Garza of the Journal Sentinel staff contributed to this report from Milwaukee.

REMEMBER::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
akers what amounts to a new 2009-'11 budget, rewriting his February proposal.
Under Doyle's plan:
• Non-emergency state employees will be required to take 16 days of unpaid leave in the next two years, saving up to $120 million a year. Those furloughs equal a 3% pay cut, the governor said. Prison guards and those who care for the disabled would not be furloughed.
• As many as 10,000 nonunion state workers, including University of Wisconsin faculty and academic staff, will not receive the 2% pay raise they had been scheduled to get in June, saving about $30 million a year. Legislative leaders must approve this change.
• The state will ask union members to reopen contract negotiations to achieve a similar 2% in payroll savings, or about $36 million a year. If the unions don't negotiate the pay cut, about 400 workers would be laid off over the next two years.
• A new cut of up to 5% will be made in state spending, which Doyle said will force the layoff of about 700 other workers.
• Deeper cuts from what Doyle proposed in February will be made in aid to public schools and local governments and on health care spending. The size of these new cuts won't be known until the Legislative Fiscal Bureau issues a report on state finances next week.

Doyle calls for layoffs, furloughs, cuts to fill $6.5 billion hole
By Steven Walters and Stacy Forster of the Journal Sentinel May 7, 2009
Proposed Cuts
How Gov. Jim Doyle would fix a budget deficit that now stands at up to $6.5 billion through June 30, 2011:
Furloughs
8 unpaid days a year for non-emergency workers - equal to 3% pay cut.
Pay raises
Rescind 2% raises that nonunion workers were to get in June; also ask union members to give up that raise. If they don't, 400 workers would lose their jobs.
Layoffs
Up to 700 more layoffs, depending on how agencies implement new spending cuts.
Spending cuts
4% more in across-the-board spending cuts, on top of 1% cut ordered in February.
Aid to schools
Reduction in aid to public schools recommended in February.
Aid to municipalities
Deeper cut in shared revenue than the 1% proposed earlier.

Doyle calls for layoffs, furloughs, cuts to fill $6.5 billion hole
Editorial: And it just gets worse
Madison - Gov. Jim Doyle said Thursday that the budget deficit has exploded to up to $6.5 billion - a historic gap he wants fixed by laying off up to 1,100 employees, furloughing non-emergency workers eight days a year, rescinding 2% pay raises and making new cuts in aid to schools and local governments.
Doyle said the $5 billion deficit he and lawmakers faced in March has soared because tax collections are running far below estimates. The potential $6.5 billion gap will occur over a three-year period ending June 30, 2011.
"We are facing tougher choices than ever about what level of state services we can sustain at a time when people need them most," Doyle said. "I am fighting to protect the middle class, education, public safety and health care."
Doyle said he would not propose any additional tax increases to rebalance the 2009-'11 budget and said he hopes Democratic legislators go along with the cuts he proposed Thursday. The budget the governor gave to the Legislature in February included $1.7 billion in tax and fee increases.
Democrats, who control the Legislature, promised an independent look at Doyle's cuts.
"We're a co-equal branch of government," said Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison), co-chairman of the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee.
Assembly Republican Leader Jeff Fitzgerald of Horicon said state government must become smaller, but Doyle's new cuts don't cancel tax and spending increases that he signed into law or has proposed.

Wisconsin operates on a biennium, covering two fiscal years at a time. A fiscal year begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 of the following year with the biennium starting July 1 of odd-numbered years. Agency budget requests are submitted in September of even-numbered years. During the following months, the Governor meets with the departments and agencies to hear their budget proposals for the following fiscal year. Following the hearings the Governor issues a budget recommendation for the upcoming fiscal year to the Legislature. Both the State Assembly and the Senate are required to make any necessary changes or adjustments to the budget until the bill is passed in both houses. [81] When the Lesgislature passes the bill the Governor approve of the bill as a whole, veto the entire bill or execute line-item vetoes. [82] Gov. Doyle signed the FY 2010-2011 biennial budget (covering July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2011) with 81 vetoes.[83]
Do any of you know the debt Gov. Doyle left us in?

What it amounts to is that both sides are guilty of doing this and will continue to be guilty of doing this. The democrats and the anti-Walker contingent have been unable to push their agenda though the popular vote in this state, so they have to resort to measures such as this. People may find the following advice helpful in getting rid of those annoying crickets that they keep hearing. [ http://www.ehow.com/how_6189065_rid-mole... ]
"1) Maintain a healthy lawn. Do not cut your grass too short and keep your lawn mower blades sharp. This will help do as little damage to the grass as possible. Do not over-water your lawn.
2) Remove anything that might weaken the grass or its root system and attract mole crickets." (Yes, this includes the old Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover yard signs.)
"3) Introduce the mole crickets' natural predators, the larra wasp and the sphecid wasp. Both types of wasps lay their eggs on the mole crickets. The larval in turn eat the crickets. Each of the three generations of wasps per year can kill up to 25 percent of the mole crickets plaguing your yard.
4) Encourage the wasps to enter your yard by planting shrubbery such as false buttonwood and partridge pea wildflowers."

This story is old to me. If he is guilty or enough evidence is brought forth, he will be charged. If not then he will have to run on a record of failure in 2014, if the Dems can turn out a candidate with a heartbeat, he is gone. As is evidenced by the presidential election. You can gerrymander districts all day long , you cannot gerrymander the state borders, although I am sure they will try. With all of the totally necessary spending on new election laws I am sure they will do all they can to DECREASEV voter turnout, because all rhetoric aside thats what people like RAF really want is less people voting. Then the candidates they do the zombie walk behind will "win", because to people like RAF and other far right wing and far left wing folks, its more about Bears vs Packers(our team vs their team) than whats actually good for society.

Rest assured, since he went big time courting billionaires from outstate, he doesn't need the network of small time crooks. Enjoy it while it lasts Scotty. The billionaires can be a fickle bunch. God Bless America.

OK Walker haters your starting to sound like “birthers” (people who think Obama wasn’t born in America) There's nothing there but dragging it out... Do you really think Obama didn’t talk to campaign people on Air Force One at all? Both sides do this it's NOT illegal.

I think it's naive to say that Walker in some way is not being investigated for anything and everything they can get him on. When the chief investigator of the probe has a "Recall Walker" sign in his front yard and a "union solidarity" sign on his front door, to say that there is going to be no bias is absolutely laughable. Walker did the right thing by hiring these attorneys to protect himself with what is turning into a 3 year long witch hunt.........

Sure he can--from an article on the defense fund--
"The Government Accountability Board wouldn't comment but referred us to its summary of the law on legal defense funds for elected officials.

Agree, he would be stupid not to be prepared, since this witch hunt has gone on for more than 30 months. The Milwaukee County DA's have much more pressing issues in Milwaukee that they should be dealing with, than continuing their vendetta against Walker.

It's a smart thing to do from his perspective Marge. Obviously there have been people in influential positions that have shown that they will do anything and everything to remove Walker from office.......

Why would walker set up a legal defense fund when he is "absolutely" confident that he is not a subject of a criminal investigation involving former aides in his Milwaukee County office.

Yada....Too funny! You must have been seriously disappointed when reading the bolded headline of an opinion piece which was clearly slanted against Walker......
"There may be nothing illegal about what the Milwaukee County district attorney has laid out. That doesn't make those activities right."
--------
That's right--"nothing illegal":) I'm surprised that you didn't try returning the paper after reading the headline. Probably had a combo of your tears and drool all over it though....right??

I bought the GAZETTE today - - just so I could once again read the EDITORIAL reprinted from Milwaukee. Journal Sentinel --> "EMAILS REVEAL SEAMY SIDE OF CAMPAIGN" on page 4A of the Gazette today. The truth on Walker has come out and more will follow as the investigation continues. Way to go Scotty have your campaign people "helping to manage county government for the benefit of only one citizen - SCOTT WALKER"

Why would he have a pitcher of water and four bottles of water on his desk?
I wonder if Gov. Walker pours those bottles of water into that pitcher. I don't think a governor should have bottled water on his desk. It makes it look like he doesn't trust the water supply in his state. Did you know railroads would use white pepper so passengers wouldn't think there was soot in their food?
I'm just ramblin'...

Why is it that before the other shoe drops you hear phrases like "absolutely confident" and "110% confident?" Then the phrases change to something like "looking forward to telling my side of the story in a court of law." (Although they seldom actually testify.) Then after a year or so in prison, their appeal provides them with a chance to "correct the miscarriage of justice." They then lose their appeal and ride off into the sunset of the political scrapyard.
