— The city expects to issue a building permit in the next couple of weeks for renovation work and construction of a nationally recognized fitness center on Milton Avenue.

Gale Price, Janesville's manager of building and development services, said Planet Fitness plans to open a 19,000-square-foot facility between Big Lots and the United States Post Office.

Based in New Hampshire, Planet Fitness has more than 600 owned and franchised locations, primarily in the United States. It has 11 centers in Wisconsin, with plans for an operation in Fond du Lac.

Price said his department is reviewing site and buildings plans, which include additional construction to the rear of the building. A fitness center is an approved use of the site, he said, and issuing a building permit is the next step.

Plans call for an extensive number of treadmills, exercise bikes, weight equipment, a 30-minute workout area, tanning booths and a shower area, Price said. The project also will include some demolition of the existing building and construction to the rear, which faces Randall Avenue.

The renovation will require a slight move for Cost Cutters. Owner Kyle Hovey said he would get a larger space in the new building and have access from both Milton Avenue and Randall Avenue.

"It's a good thing," he said. "I'll get a bigger, newer space with a pylon sign out front, something I've never had.

"My front door will still be toward Milton Avenue, and that's good, because after 27 years here I think cars automatically know where to go."

The Planet Fitness website bills the company as "the most innovative health club brand in the United States, known for absurdly low prices."

Marc Groshan, owner of the Janesville Athletic Club, said he thinks "competition is healthy."

"However, Planet Fitness will not be adding anything new to the community," Groshan said. "Our express club is $10 a month and offers far more services and amenities."

James L. Johnson of Johnson Acquisition Corp., Janesville, owns the property. Barry Badertscher of Badertscher Real Estate has been brokering the deal.

JAC Can't be beat. The most you pay is 29 the least is 10. Yes you have a contract and yes you have to pay a once a year fee..but it still adds up to be less than anywhere else. And you get indoor and outdoor pool, gym, tennis, multiple work out rooms and did I mention the large variety of group classes! Anytime sucks!! I got so bored there with there tiny location and lack of variety. Planet well do great when first opening but well eventually wear off. Who would pay over 40 at the Y!!

Frogger is right. They are already adding on to the building. The extension in the back is walled in with concrete blocks. All it needs is a roof and interior finishing. They have a temporary fence across the front to keep folks out of harm's way. None of this would have happened yet if a permit had not already been issued.

I was at the JAC When I went to renew my membership I was met with the most rude people ever. When I said something to a manager he was no better. I have better places to spend my money.

For the express I was told you had to pay extra to use the kids room and to tan.

frusion-yes they had lower rates before Anytime. I can't say how long before but they were first. How the other businesses will impact its hard to say but they will have an impact for sure. Bottom line will be are they better. You know how a new eating place opens and everyone goes to check it out but if the food or service are not good they won't be back. Same is true here. We know what the Club offers, these others are unknown at this point.

The group fitness classes and instructors at JAC are the best in the area. Jac has a $10 option but for only $29 you get all the variety you could ever ask for. Definitely can't get bored there.

aren't they already building?

I they are planning to open aren't they doing more than "eyeing" the location?

What is included in the "express" for $10 a mo?

Parker I agree with you I don't like all the pressure to use the trainers. I know what I want to do and I don't need help from anyone. If they do kick you out for making a lot of noise (dropping weight and grunting) that would be a huge plus. I hate listening to all that. Sounds like a good place for me.

bibledude, would you say they were at or below market rates before competition moved in?
And as for being fine, I have to wonder with the added fitness facilities competition AND a new indoor tennis facility opening in Janesville, will they still be fine?

I gotta say, JAC will be fine, Anytime Fitness better clean up its act. Anytime and Planet fitness, I believe cater to a different group of fitness seekers. I for one, do not care for JAC only because of the size, and I prefer the 24 hour availability. I am paying $45 a month (@Anytime) as required by my contract, but dont go much because of the pressure from staff to use their trainers. I dont want to buff up, i want to walk the treadmill and do my thing. I prefer no pressure, so I welcome Planet Fitness...hoping they migrate to Milton too. I would like to say "goodbye" to Anytime Fitness.

mteg, exaggerate much? I highly doubt you will be asked to leave a gym if you grunt! Thanks for the laugh, though.

frusion-"JAC will find you reap what you sow." They will be happy to know that since they have sown so much good in the community. They help with charity events and local non profits, sponsor local business and events, offer an excellent product at below market rates. JAC sound like according to frusion you are in for quite a blessing!

mteg, I guess if you are a professional body builder Planet Fitness is not the place for you. I don't think most people that would go there need to worry about the rules you are against.

I personally think this is a great addition to Janesville and I hope they do well. JAC for years thought they had Janesville but the nads and they could do anything and charge anything they wanted. Then came Anytime and now Planet Fitness--I'm sure they are not happy. And, with a soon to be opening of a new indoor tennis and fitness facility (yes, yet another fitness facility) will likely bring JAC to its knees. JAC will find you reap what you sow.

user28...
That sounds a bit extreme to me. I think that what you get for your money cant be beat. I also think their childcare room is a great deal too and the express club downtown has awesome people working there. Everybody has been very friendly and helpful.
God bless all :-)

Planet fitness is a joke. The irony of their comercials is that the bad acting of their employee's is a direct representation of how they really are. Anyone that actually works out in that you break a sweat...beware switching to here. Planet Fitness has a different philosophy. First there is the famous lunk alarm that sounds off if a rule is broken. Rules include:
Dropping weights
Posing in the mirror
Deadlifting
lifting heavy
Grunting...yes grunting, they will kick you out for that
etc...
Basically their philosophy is the judgement free zone...so people can feel good about themselves without actually working out their...and it works two ways. If you look intimidating or someone there feels intimidated by you or your workout...you'll get asked to leave.

I wish I would not have gotten a membership at JAC now. I had to sign a one year membership which I won't use very much once it gets warm again. Then I did the free fitness assessment which they basically told me I will never get to the goal weight I want unless I pay another $30 a week for a trainer. (Which is a bunch of crap because I lost all the weight before w/o a trainer and I will do it again) JAC is cheap but lets not forget about the yearly membership fee they charge on up of the monthly fee. I've heard great things Planet Fitness. I hope they do well.

I don't think this was a wise business choice for Planet Fitness. There will be an initial buzz when they open but I think after time people will see they get more bang for their buck at the athletic club. They should have gone to an area where there wasn't such an established fitness facility as JAC which offers more than Planet ever could and for less money. I wonder if they truly researched this before they made they made the decision to come here.

this is good news...the JAC must have seen this coming or something because the whole "get started for $1" and $10/month deal will be hard to beat.

That is GREAT!!!! Hopefully they get everything settled and built and open soon. We are members at Anytime and it is a nightmare. We won't be renewing in January and have been counting down the months waiting for the contract to be over. Planet Fitness has locations in Rockford and also where I lived in Charlotte, NC. Great prices and no contract! A welcome newcomer to Janesville!
