Warhawk women lose to defending national champs
BLOOMINGTON, ILL. The No. 17-ranked UW-Whitewater women's basketball team couldn't keep the lid on defending NCAA Division III national champion No. 14 Illinois Wesleyan and suffered a 72-69 nonconference road loss Tuesday.
The Warhawks built a 40-30 lead in the second half that the Titans cut to 47-46 with 11:12 remaining. Whitewater built the lead back to eight, 55-47, with 10 minutes to play.
Wesleyan took its first lead of the game, 62-61, on a pair of free throws with 2:37 remaining. The Titans sealed the victory with a 5-0 run to take a 67-63 lead with 1:41 to play.
The Titans made 16 of 19 free throws in the second half, while Whitewater made five of seven free throws.
Whitewater's Kaitlyn Thill scored 21 points, Courtney Kumerow added 14 points and Katie Burton scored 12 for Whitewater.
