Subcontractors for JRF Construction of Westfield, Ind., work on a tower being added to the side of the Burger King on Milton Avenue in Janesville. The restaurant is getting a face-lift outside and in. The drive-through has been open during work but will be closed four days this week to allow for repaving of the parking lot.

What it is: A facelift to the Burger King at 2624 Milton Ave., Janesville. Crews are updating the building's dining area, restrooms and exterior façade.

Construction crews should be wrapping up work by the end of this week on the renovation of the restaurant, said project supervisor Casey Burress of Westfield, Ind.,-based JRF Construction.

All of the changes are part of a plan by Burger King to give its restaurants a more modern appearance with cleaner, cube-like geometrics, Burress said.

"When it's all finished, it will have a more squared-off look," he said.

Burress said major renovations in the project include:

-- A new layout and new furnishings in the dining area, including two flat-screen televisions. Burress said the restaurant plans to keep in place its "freestyle" beverage machine, a computerized soft drink fountain that offers 120 drink flavors.

-- Remodeled restrooms with new fixtures. Plans are for the entire restaurant to be fully handicapped accessible, Burress said.

-- Removal of a sunroom dining area to make the building more energy efficient. That will shrink the dining room's size and bring the building's overall footprint back to its original 3,500 square feet, Burress said.

-- Updates to the exterior façade. Construction plans call for towers on the street-side entryway.

The Burger King was built in 1977, according to city records.

It had a significant interior redesign in 1985, when crews built an atrium bump out. In 2008, crews relocated the restaurant's service counter, according to city records.

Burress said the restaurant's kitchen and drive-through have been open to customers during most of the project but will be closed four days this week while crews resurface the restaurant parking area.

This "facelift" is long overdue. But as others have noted, without an overhaul in service and cleanliness it is money down the drain. Extremely slow service for "fast food". I usually make a different choice when in the area due to bad service experiences.

I posted the same comment back when Arby's moved north to their "new" place. If service and food quality/temp doesn't improve, the shiny building won't help. Sadly, I've not been to the new Arby's by the cow to see if things got better. With the history of this BK location it will take a while for me to try it as well.

The best BK around is in Walworth. Clean, courteous and quick.

Ya, the one in Milton is super clean compared to this one. I wonder if the contributing factor that not many people go to BK is the wait? Usually lunch time the drive through takes 12-15 minutes to get your food, inside isnt much better and no one is in there. Maybe if they had more people working they could be faster and wouldnt end up broke and having to downsize their burger patties.

No one else has noticed the micro size burger patties?

I eat fast food about once a week. Often the BK in milton. I don't go inside. ignorance is bliss. What I would like, is a person who doesn't interrupt me in the middle of my order. Then they wouldn't have to ask me so many questions, and I wouldn't have to repeat myself. I want medium fries and drink. and no I don't want cheese. If you'd listen, I will tell you all you need to know. When you give me my change, give me the coins first. Don't put the bills in my hand, and then expect me to balance the coins on top. coins in the palm, bills in the fingers. simple. Lastly, DO NOT ask me to pull forward if my order isn't ready. I don't care if you're on a timer, so am I.

After eating fast food since 1977, you would need a face lift too

reasonbeing - I think the one in Milton is worlds better than this one was. In general I like Burger King burgers better than some other fast food places, but I just cringed at this Janesville one and quit going there when my kids were littler because of the lack of cleanliness and the questionable hygiene of the employees. You would think with the economy the way it is they could get people to work there who actually have an IQ and care a little.

BURGER KING gets a gold star, for hiring local contracters from westfield indiana. drove by saturday, man standing on top of scaffold ring, with no plank, no safety belt, and no hard hat. osha would be writing tickets for a week. hope their work is better than their safety program.

Now maybe the door knobs and handles won't have a layer of dirt or grease on them when I open the door.

Seems about time. Long over due for the bathrooms. NOW if you get the employees to read and do as the sign says of washing their hands it would be all good. Saw pregnant employee leave directly from the stall to the floor- then to outside to smoke and directly back to the kitchen. GROSS! She passed me and didn't even decide since somebody saw her that she should wach he hands.
