— UW-Whitewater put on the kind of performance it needed Saturday in preparation for the WIAC football showdown next week against UW-Oshkosh.

The Warhawks scored on their first four possessions and held UW-Stout to 136 total yards in a

41-7 victory in a steady drizzle at Menomonie.

Despite the long bus trip, the Warhawks came out smoking and grabbed a 14-0 lead with 2:46 left in the first quarter.

“I was very pleased,” Whitewater coach Lance Leipold said Saturday night. “I think it was the best we’ve played in all phases. We scored on our first four possessions, and played well.”

Desmin Ward opened the scoring on a 1-yard run and finished with 120 yards on 24 carries.

Quarterback Lee Brekke threw three touchdown passes, going 12 of 17 for 222 yards.

“He made some good decisions,” Leipold said. “He scrambled a little bit.”

Brekke hit Bernie Tamsett with a 10-yard scoring pass to give the Warhawks a 14-0 lead. Joe Worthy caught a 35-yard scoring pass to give Whitewater a 27-7 lead at halftime, and Steve Morris caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to make it 34-7.

Reserve quarterback Matt Behrendt then hit Worth with a 9-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, the defense did another superb job, limiting Stout to six yards rushing and 14 of 33 passing. The Warhawks had eight tackles for losses and three quarterback sacks.

Evansville High graduate and Warhawk junior defensive back Andrew Keister accounted for two interceptions in the fourth quarter, including one in the Stout end zone.

“Those were outstanding picks,” Leipold said. “The one in the end zone was an unbelievable catch. The second one he kind of tipped it, caught it and made a real athletic return.”

The Warhawks also were bolstered by the return of Zach Howard, who had missed the first five games. Howard returned six punts for 57 yards, including a 28-yarder. He also caught two passes for 23 yards.

The Warhawks now prepare for the Titans, who share the conference lead at 3-0.

Kickoff for next Saturday’s homecoming game is 1 p.m.
