Milton can't conquer Burlington's serves
BURLINGTON Milton High girls volleyball coach Wayne Hansen did everything short of measuring the Burlington High School volleyball court to prove the dimensions were no different than Milton's court.
Yet it wasn't enough to keep the wide-eyed Red Hawks from coming out flat against the top-seeded Burlington Thursday evening.
That was all the advantage Burlington needed to take down Milton 3-0 in a WIAA Division 1 Sectional semifinal here Thursday evening. The Demons won, 25-12, 25-20, and 25-19.
With the victory, Burlington advances to the sectional finals against Westosha Central on Saturday at Elkhorn High School.
Milton, meanwhile, is stuck with a frustrating ending to a successful season.
"I thought this season went fantastic," Hansen said. "We didn't win conference, but we got through a lot of turmoil as a team and finished second in a tough conference."
Unfortunately for the Red Hawks, they just didn't have enough to take on an established program like Burlington.
"Look at how big Burlington's gym is," Hansen said. "We tried to prepare for it, but I knew we would have butterflies and would come out flat."
The Demons took advantage of the nervous Red Hawks from the start with a quick 4-0 lead in the first game. After Milton cut the deficit to 7-5, Burlington finished off the Red Hawks with an 18-7 spurt to earn the 25-12 victory.
The tough-serving Demons' carried their momentum into game two and quickly led 9-3
The Red Hawks, however, countered with a 16-6 run that pushed them ahead 19-15. But the Demons immediately answered Milton with a 10-1 run to gain the 25-20 victory.
"After we got up 19-15, they (Burlington) served us tough," Hansen said. "They started serving between us so we couldn't get our three-point pass in, so they took us out of our offense.
"We wanted to speed up our offense to try to take Burlington out of their game, but they just served us tougher."
The tough-serving Demons finished off Milton in the third game and ended the careers of seven Red Hawk seniors.
"This is only the second time in the history of Milton High School that we've gone to sectionals," Hansen said. "But we are building for the future."
