— A $25,0000 state grant will be used to improve handicap accessibility at Twin Oaks Shelter for the Homeless.

“We will use the funding to update one of our units to complete (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance,” said Marc Perry of Community Action of Rock/Walworth Counties. “We will also be able to improve accessibility in the community kitchen area.”

Community Action owns and operates Twin Oaks, the only permanent, year-round emergency shelter in Walworth County.

“We serve homeless individuals and families,” Perry said. “With our 12 units, we can serve as many as 125 individuals or 65 families a year.

“Over the past four years, we have trended to serving more families than individuals, especially younger families with children.”

The grant, from the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority Foundation, was scheduled for formal presentation Wednesday.
