On Wisconsin: Romney moves to put state in play

Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney greets supporters at his campaign headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla., Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012.

— Out of necessity and emboldened by recent GOP strides in Wisconsin, Republican challenger Mitt Romney has drawn President Barack Obama into a fight for a state the incumbent Democrat won handily four years ago and his party hasn’t lost since 1984.

Just two months before Election Day, Wisconsin has emerged as the latest presidential battleground. Television advertising is flooding it. And both campaigns are jockeying for its 10 electoral votes as each looks to rack up wins in enough states to accumulate the 270 votes needed for victory. Romney has fewer ways to do that so he’s turned to Wisconsin — where Republicans like Gov. Scott Walker have had success since 2008 and where Romney running mate Paul Ryan lives — presumably in hopes that a win here will offset a loss elsewhere.

Republicans and Democrats say internal polling shows Obama ahead, though public surveys show a closer race.

Undeterred by the state’s historic Democratic bent, Romney started airing TV ads here this week reminding voters of a ballooning federal debt that now tops $16 trillion. GOP outside groups already have spent weeks running ads raising concern over the Obama health care law and inviting those who backed him in 2008 to swtich sides. Ryan, who is also on Wisconsin’s ballot for his House seat, is reinforcing those messages with his own commercials paid for by his congressional campaign fund.

Refusing to cede ground, a pro-Obama group has reserved air time to run anti-Romney spots through November’s election; Obama’s campaign planned to begin advertising in the state on Wednesday.

Both candidates also are dispatching their No. 2s to the state; Ryan returned Wednesday for his third large-scale rally in a month and Democratic Vice President Joe Biden is swooping in Thursday to Eau Claire.

In neighborhoods, competing campaign signs are cropping up again. So are the divisions.

Retired teacher Ron Jacobson ticked off a list of reasons he can’t stomach Obama, and confessed he’s more excited about the prospect of Obama losing than Romney winning.

“He has to be a little more forceful,” Jacobson said, urging the Republican nominee to show more of his personality, come harder at Obama and “toot his own horn a little bit more.”

Obama supporter Chuck Schultz, a retired Methodist minister and counselor, backs Obama but has no illusion that 2012 will be as much of a walkover as 2008.

“Nothing is as exciting as the beginning of the new romance even though the long-term relationship is often more productive,” Schultz said. “It’s hard to be wildly enthusiastic about the guy who’s not new anymore.”

There are reasons for Romney to think he has a shot here, and that help explain why Obama’s campaign and state Democrats have been girding for a closer election this fall than his 14-point win in 2008.

Wisconsin Republicans are on a hot streak. Not even two years into his term, Walker soundly fended off an expensive recall challenge sparked by moves to limit public employee benefits and union bargaining power. Tea party-supported Republican Ron Johnson upended Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold in one of the surprise races of 2010.

Mindful of those GOP victories, Obama prepared for a Wisconsin fight. He opened 50 offices where volunteers have been working to persuade voters for months. Romney has about half as many offices, but Republicans say they’re hardly starting from scratch because many volunteers didn’t let up after the hard-fought campaign to protect Walker’s job in the June recall election.

“We’re well positioned to compete,” Romney senior adviser Kevin Madden said. “Because we have Paul Ryan on the ticket, it’s just another reason why we think we can do very well there and put it in the win column in 2012.”

It won’t be easy.

Obama’s win was so decisive last time that he prevailed in 59 Wisconsin counties to John McCain’s 13. Four years before, in 2004, Republican President George W. Bush amassed 45 county wins in his razor-thin loss in the state to Democratic Sen. John Kerry.

This November, Obama likely will convincingly win the counties encompassing the Democratic strongholds of Madison and Milwaukee. Romney almost certainly can bank on a surplus of votes in solidly conservative counties bordering Milwaukee. What happens in the midsize areas will prove more consequential in determining if Wisconsin resembles the 2000 and 2004 elections — when less than a half-percentage point made the difference — or the 2008 campaign that produced the Obama blowout.

The economy is at the top of voters’ minds here.

Racine County, in Ryan’s congressional district, has suffered from some of the worst unemployment in Wisconsin. The city’s rate for July was 12.7 percent, highest in the state. Racine County’s unemployment rate was 9.2 percent, ninth-highest statewide and far above the Wisconsin average of 7.3 percent.

Jane Witt, Racine County Democratic Party chairwoman, is confident that heavy canvassing, phone banking, house parties and outreach events will deliver the county of roughly 200,000 people for Obama again even if the sell might be tougher now.

“We know very well that a lot of people are not better off than they were four years ago,” Witt said. “But on the other hand, I think people instinctively know (Romney) is not the way to go.”

Ozaukee County Republican Party Chairman Jeff Johns said he’s heartened that Romney is competing here. But the financial analyst said Romney needs to be smart about evaluating his return on investment, looking elsewhere if the state isn’t clearly within reach.

“I’m a numbers man,” Johns said. “I would give it another four weeks in Wisconsin and then reassess the chances of winning.”

St. Croix County, the state’s fastest-growing, is one of those proving grounds. Situated along a river separating Wisconsin and Minnesota, the county rebounded more quickly from the economic recession and has an unemployment rate almost 2 percentage points lower than the state average of 7.3 percent and far better than the nation’s jobless rate.

The area has long tilted Republican, but Obama showed surprising strength in his last run and kept McCain close. In North Hudson, a bedroom community not far from a bustling brick-lined Main Street, Obama prevailed. The vote? 1,078 for him, 1,077 for his GOP rival.

Associated Press writers Scott Bauer in Madison and Thomas Beaumont in Ohio contributed to this report.

Actually Baratheon I think the CCC is a great idea. In fact that's exactly where our stimulus should have gone...to us, instead of bailing out banks that are still "too big to fail". Take a spin out west and you'll see all kinds of WPA and CCC projects that are to this day, iconic symbols of America. Obama didn't pursue that, and you know as well as I that the Republicans would never in a million years allow it again.
I'm not wild about voting for Obama again, but there's no way I could ever vote for Romney/Ryan. No way, no how.

.
Indeed, it's called inflation. The best hidden tax known to man. Devalue the $$, let inflation take hold, and it serves as a huge consumption tax on everyone. Of course, most are not astute enough to figure out that they are being taxed by $$ devaluation on anything you consume. 47% may not pay INCOME tax, but who cares. No one should pay income tax. It was the most silly thing ever conceived by the turn of the century progressives. The country ran fine for 140 years without one.

The reality of the situation is that ALL federal taxes should be obsolete. Since the government can and DOES print money at will(QE3 was just announced last Thursday..soon 4-5-6-7-8....) taxes should not even be levied by the federal government. The fed can simply print all $$ the politicians need to run the government. Of course this is what is happening now, as about 40 cents of every $ is spent on deficit, and that deficit is simply then bought (created from thin air) by the fed. So why should anyone pay taxes? Just print away. Let inflation be the true tax on the people; as it ALWAYS is!

Bush didn't do it. Romney didn't care, not important. All of Obama's advisor's advised against it.
• Ended Iraq War-Didnt really end-just shuffled troops over to Afganistan...with stragglers still behind
Iraq war should never be mentioned by Republicans, Why were we there? Oh yeah. Lies to the Middle East and the world by Republicans
• Killed more Al Qaeda leaders than any other President-again Presidents dont kill, they dont even make the decision to kill...He probably found out 5 min before Fox news (aside from bin laden...generals probably informed him of their plan and all he had to do was give the go ahead)
Obama gives the ok on drone strikes I've read. Even thinks about it.
• Supported "Arab Spring" uprising toward Democratic rule-Seems like this is working out real well since almost every embassy is under seige and all obuma can do is blame Hillary.
Blame Hillary? In what universe do you live in? Repoblicans, excuse me, the Tea ba....partiers blame Obama if he does anything, or if he doesn't.

Mitt Romney: NO foreign policy experience in a very DANGEROUS world!

Obama has held jobs before running for office. His foreign "polocy" doesn't have him being called Mitt the Twit. And he Romney is likely inciting the violence in the Mid-East, with his comments.

The middle class is shrinking during Obama's administration due to losing their jobs under the Bush administration. They have exhausted all of their unemployment, used up all of their savings and are now part of the working poor having to take any job they can find at 1/2 the wages they use to make, myself included. One example is the auto workers. Many use to make $28/hr, they were laid off and then offered jobs in other states at $14/hr. Another reason the middle class is shrinking is due to the banking deregulation that allowed banks to manipulate the mortgage industry devaluing people’s homes by 40%. Deregulation of the banking industry also allowed Wall Street to use commercial customer’s money for risky investments which caused many, including me, to lose 40% to 50% of their 401k. What you are seeing is the long term affect of failed republican policies. They are just coming to realization during Obama's term. The policies of the current administration are usually not felt until the 2nd term.

We have since learned Obama skipped intel briefings and had warning of this mess he's created before 9/11. We have learned it has nothing to do with this little film that was shown in L.A. last June to about a dozen people.
This Obama administration is falling about at the seams and the American people continue to have our intelligence insulted with the media who coordinate their bias and would do anything to protect Obama if slapped a baby in the face.

Since he's in favor of infanticide, slapping is the least of the baby's worry.

Promises of that many jobs, ok, just tell me how. Obama is far from a great president, but when you look at the situation, a slow recovery will put us on better track for stability than a fast flash in the pan. You realize the only reason it was not called a depression was nobody wanted to actually admit it. The Repub want to use the same tactics that has caused a great divide in the country, give the wealthy tax breaks, cut social programs. It didn't work with Reagan, or Bush, why would it work now. The only way we will get out of this IS BY EVERYONE WORKING TOGETHER, but chances of that are slim to none, from both sides. The parties have caused the divide. I wish we had a good canidate for president running, guess it is vote for the less of 2 evils.

As I predicted many many moths ago on numerous GAZ blogs. Obama will win Wisconsin, and pretty much every state that he carried in 2008. The morons of the GOP could not see the obvious, in that they elected a complete stiff in Rommney, who has ZERO shot, no matter how bad the state of the economy is, or how much wrong a direction the country is going. This election was over before it even started. Really one of the most boring, and uneventful elections in US history.

Fact: The Democrats believe their own lies more then any other group of people. That is fine by me as the entertainment factor alone in the victories of 2010, Judge Prosser, and Walker's recall are enough to warm any heart. As with the meltdown of Obama's foreign policy, they are stunned. "We were so nice" "we condemned free speech" "we give you millions" - sounds like the Democrats treated the Muslim extremist like they treat the Democrat extremist.

" Romney in “No Apology”: In his first nine months in office, President Obama has issued apologies and criticisms of America in speeches in France, England, Turkey, and Cairo; at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and the United Nations in New York City. He has apologized for what he deems to be American arrogance, dismissiveness, and derision; for dictating solutions, for acting unilaterally, and for acting without regard for others; for treating other countries as mere proxies, for unjustly interfering in the internal affairs of other nations, and for feeding anti-Muslim sentiments; for committing torture, for dragging our feet on global warming and for selectively promoting democracy.

Our fact-checking colleagues at PolitiFact and the Washington Post Fact Checker both pored over those speeches, and others, and wrote detailed analyses of the content of Obama’s words. Their conclusion: Obama never apologized.

We’ve read through the speeches as well. We’ve come to the same conclusion: Nowhere did we see that the president “apologized” for America. In some speeches, Obama was drawing a distinction between his policies and those of his predecessor, George W. Bush. In other instances, Obama appeared to be employing a bit of diplomacy, criticizing past actions of both the U.S. and the host nation, and calling for the two sides to move forward."

"Romney's response on Libya disgraceful"

"But in the hours after the death of the first U.S. ambassador killed in decades, Mitt Romney --panicked as his poll numbers have slipped --punched hard against the president, unleashing an unwise, inaccurate and un-presidential attack on the Obama administration."

"This is not just politics as usual, but something far lower. By point of comparison, when Ronald Reagan was confronted with the downed-helicopter rescue mission ordered by President Jimmy Carter to save the American hostages in the U.S. Embassy in Iran, he did not see it as opportunity to score political points. Instead, Reagan said, "This is the time for us as a nation and a people to stand united." Likewise, George H.W. Bush, then also running for president, said "I unequivocally support the president of the United States -- no ifs, ands or buts -- and it certainly is not a time to try to go one-up politically. He made a difficult, courageous decision." (Hat-tip to The Atlantic for unearthing these statements.)

No wonder a wide array of Republican foreign policy experts rose to condemn Romney's comments, including the longtime speechwriter and senior aide to Sen. John McCain, Mark Salter, who wrote: "to condemn (Obama) for policies they claim helped precipitate the attacks is as tortured in its reasoning as it is unseemly in its timing.""

Republican Leaders Bash Romney’s Bungling on Libya

Republican Peggy Noonan, a former speech writer for President Ronald Reagan:

"I don't feel that Mr. Romney has been doing himself any favors in the past few hours," she said. "When you step forward in the midst of a political environment and start giving statements on something dramatic and violent that has happened, you're always leaving yourself open to accusations that you are trying to exploit things politically."

Rep. Peter King- Republican:

"I probably would have waited 12 or 24 hours and put out a more comprehensive statement," Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told reporters on Capitol Hill. Romney's statement "can be perceived as being
political."

Former Republican Senator John Sununu, NH:

They probably should have waited," Sununu said. "You look at the way things unfolded, you look at the timing of it, they probably should have waited."

Steve Schmidt, manager of John McCain's 2008 campaign:
