Milton OKs gravel pit permit application

When town officials confirmed Monday that a developer’s proposed gravel pit plan is “compatible with the public interest” and gives “substantial justice” to all township residents, several residents responded with a wave of jeering laughter. But Marion Trescher, chairwoman of the town’s planning and zoning committee, quickly extinguished the laughter with a sharp rap of her gavel.

Gov. Scott Walker last week issued a news release hailing the Legislature’s passage of the mining bill, referring to “thousands of mining-related jobs over the next few years.” Sen. Tim Cullen on Monday issued a statement saying that a mine is “is seven to 10 years away—if an applicant even survives the permitting process and withstands inevitable litigation.”

Police: Driver was drunk in crash that killed Fitchburg woman

A Janesville man had a blood-alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit when his truck smashed head-on into a car last week near Janesville, killing a Fitchburg woman and injuring a Janesville woman, according to police reports.
