Milton, Elkhorn advance two to wrestling semifinals

— The opening day of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament was a success for a number of area Division 1 wrestlers.

Milton's Nolan Shea and Kyle Hinners advanced to tonight's semifinal round with two wins Thursday.

Elkhorn also advanced two wrestlers to the semifinals as defending 170-pound state champion Jake Stilling and unbeaten 220-pounder Dakota Johnson won two matches.

Lake Geneva Badger's Rory Shine made it five area wrestlers in the semifinal round as he won twice at 152 pounds.

In Division 3, Orfordville Parkview's Alex Hauri (132) and Justin Graham (182) won their opening-round match to advance to this morning's quarterfinal round.

The fourth-ranked Shea (36-4) wrestles Tres Leon (12-0) of Kaukauna in his semifinal match, while Hinners will take a 32-6 record into his match with Mitch Hertel (31-7) of Marshfield.

Stilling and Johnson cruised to a pair of wins Thursday. Johnson moved to 35-0 on the season, while Stilling improved to 44-1 by pinning both opponents.

Shine continued his late-season surge as he moved his record to 10-2 with two decisions. He will face freshman Beau Breske (48-2) of Hartford in his semifinal bout.

In Division 3, Hauri improved to 39-6 on the season by winning 2-0 in overtime over Matt Massman of Blair-Taylor.

Graham, a senior, upped his season record to 44-2 with his opening-round win. He wrestles top-ranked Luke Nowak (42-0) of Edgar in today's quarterfinal match.

In Division 2, Evansville/Albany's Jordan Meyer advanced to the quarterfinals with a 12-3 win over Bennett Paulson of Amery. Meyer, a freshman, improved to 30-6 and wrestles top-ranked Dewey Krueger (39-1) of Oconto Falls today.
