Warhawk men display shooting touch
WHITEWATER UW-Whitewater had the fifth-best shooting percentage in school history Wednesday to defeat visiting Cardinal Stritch University, 91-81, in nonconference men's basketball.
The Warhawks (10-2), ranked No. 12 in the D3hoops.com poll, made 30 of 42 shots from the floor, including 11 of 17 three-point attempts to knock off the Wolves (15-2), who are ranked No. 1 among Division 2 NAIA schools.
The Warhawks went on a 10-2 first-half run to take an 18-12 lead on a Darnell Harris three-point basket. Stritch took a 23-21 lead, but Whitewater led 42-37 at the half.
The Warhawks ticked off a 15-4 run to start the second half for a 57-44 lead and held the lead the rest of game.
Alex Merg scored a game-high 22 points, including a 4-for-4 effort from three-point range for Whitewater. Eric Bryson, an Elkhorn graduate, followed with 17 points, Harris added 16, Quardell Young scored 12 and Luke Knoble chipped in 11 points for the Warhawks.
Whitewater plays at UW-River Falls at 3 p.m. Saturday.
