JANESVILLE Wrestling takes center stage tonight as one of the city's most storied and heated rivalries takes to the mat.
Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker meet for the 49th time at 7 p.m. in the Viking gym.
The Vikings hold a 31-17 advantage in the all-time series, but the Cougars are shooting for their fourth straight win. Tonight's winner retains the Kaster-Cramer Cup, named in honor of longtime Craig coach Joe Kaster and Parker coach Ron Cramer.
Craig can earn a share of the Big Eight Conference dual meet title with a win tonight. The Cougars are 7-1 in Big Eight duals, tied for the top spot with Middleton and Sun Prairie.
Parker has battled injuries and a lack of numbers and takes an uncharacteristic 3-5 dual meet record into the match.
"I don't care what the records are, it's still Craig vs. Parker," Craig coach Mark Mullen said. "Beating us would make Parker's season, so we have to be ready to wrestle from the very start.
"We've wrestled well lately as a team and need to keep the momentum going. But this match is still the biggest match of the season for both teams because of the rivalry and bragging rights."
Craig has a number of wrestlers with outstanding season records. Topping the list is Airk Furseth at 106 pounds. The sophomore is 33-1 and ranked fifth in the state in Division 1.
The Cougars have six other wrestlers with at least 20 wins on the season. Junior Zack Mulrooney is 30-3 at 145, while senior Dakota Pearson is 29-4 at 285. Anthony Skrede (22-3), Kyle LeCaptain (25-4), Alex Zimmerman (20-5) and Aaron Maresch (23-10) have also surpassed 20 wins for the season for Craig.
Parker is led by Dylan Siener at 120 pounds. The sophomore is 24-4 is coming and off a 5-0 performance at the Big Eight Duals last Saturday. Mat Pakes (152) and sophomore Gage Burdick (126) have also been impressive for the Vikings.
"This is the time of year when you have to start building momentum with February and the tournament right around the corner," Parker coach Andy Tubbs said. "And obviously a great place to start is the Craig match.
"We're still a little shorthanded with injuries, but the kids that are going to go out and wrestle tomorrow night, I expect them to leave everything on the mat."
