Spotlighters shine at invitational
EMMETSBURG, Iowa Janesville Craig High School's show choir walked away with an armful of awards at the Emmetsburg Extravaganza Show Choir Invitational on Saturday.
The awards included best band, the third time the Craig Spotlighters band has won that award this year, and best female vocalist.
Craig's Chandler Cook won the best vocalist award for the second time this season.
The Craig Spotlighters took second in the competition. The Dowling (Iowa) Catholic High School Dimensions took first.
The Spotlighters also won the best vocals and best choreography awards.
The Spotlighters' last competition of the year will be at Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Washington High School this Saturday for the Mo Show Invitational.
Bob Schrank, who directs the Spotlighters, is retiring this spring, as is Craig Band Director Dave Rush, who prepares the Spotlighters band for competition.
The Gazette last week asked the school district if Craig would continue in future years to offer the show choir and the multiple band experiences that Rush has offered. The response was a joint statement from Principal Alison Bjoin and Kim Ehrhardt, district director of instruction, saying that it depends on who is hired to replace the two men "and the talent and repertoire they bring."
"Our goal is to continue to offer high quality musical experiences for students at Craig High School that include extracurricular experiences," according to the statement.
The Spotlighters' final performance of the year will be at 7:30 Tuesday, March 12, in the large auditorium at Craig, 401 S. Randall Ave., Janesville.

It will be close to impossible to replace Mr. Schrank and Mr. Rush, both great leaders. Thank's for your years of service and good luck in the future.
