— A birthday celebration ended at a local hospital early Friday morning after police say a man stabbed his friend in the neck at a Janesville tavern.

Officers were dispatched about 1 a.m. to St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital after a stabbing at Charlie’s Place, 2020 E. Racine St., where a group of friends was celebrating a birthday, Lt. Keith Lawver said.

Police arrested Joseph Reigert, 23, of 258 Ba Wood Lane, Janesville, at the hospital on charges of first-degree reckless injury and injury by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon. Lawver said a friend was teasing Reigert throughout the night, and Reigert pulled a folding knife from his pocket and sliced the friend on the side of his neck, leaving a 5-inch cut.

A third friend was cut on the finger while trying to take the knife away, Lawver said.

The friends left the bar and drove themselves to the hospital, which notified police. The man with the neck injury was treated and released.
