Changes on corner of Milton and Black Bridge

What it is: The shopping plaza at the corner of Black Bridge Road and Milton Avenue has seen a number of changes in the past six months, and more are coming.
The building next to Big Lots, 1714 Milton Ave., Janesville, has been home mostly to cobwebs for more than a decade.
Earlier this year, Planet Fitness announced plans to move into the 19,000-square-foot space.
The project includes remodeling the current building, some demolition and additional construction on the back of the building.
The remodeling meant a move for Cost Cutters, which was directly next door to the yet unopened Planet Fitness. Last week, workers tore down the old Cost Cutters to provide more room for parking.
Cost Cutters has already moved to its new location directly across Milton Avenue.
Progress: At 6:30 p.m. today at City Hall, 18 N. Jackson Street, the plan commission will hold a public hearing on a proposed CVS Pharmacy that a developer wants to build in the corner of the Big Lots parking lot.
The pharmacy would be 13,225 square feet and would be located on 1.21 acres. The owner of the property, Johnson Acquisition Corp., will be asking the commission for conditional–use permits for a two-lane drive-through and for an electronic message center.
It also needs a permit to share access to the adjoining streets.
What was there previously: In 1975, Kohl's opened a grocery store in what is now the Big Lots store, according to Gazette records.
Before that, the site was home to a "hot dog establishment."
The move to Milton Avenue came eight years after Kohl's attempted to build a grocery story on Atwood Avenue between Court and Milwaukee streets. Courthouse Hill residents and members of Trinity Episcopal Church objected strongly, and the idea was dropped.
CVS previously had a pharmacy in Creston Park Mall, about 1,000 feet from the proposed store.
CVS currently has a store 1832 Court Street, Janesville.
Completion date: If everything goes as planned, the new CVS will open this fall.

IIRC....When Frost top was there with the new Arches were across the street....you were at the edge of Jville. The Oasis by the "I" was "far" away.
The Hwy 26 Outdoor theatre (now Woodmans) and McNall John Deere Implement (now the Jville mall) were the only things between the "I" and the "edge" of town.
THAT was also the time when there WAS a BLACK bridge on Black Bridge road.....

Birdman, I agree with you, I do remember when Frosty Top was on the curve of Kennedy Rd. It sure wouldn't hurt to have another root beer joint in this town, then there would be one on each side.

It's the same reason many fast food establishments will build near a McDonald's too. If they can make it, then the competitors will try to steal those customers going that don't want to wait or make people choose. It's good business.

Sigma - ever notice how there are often numerous car dealerships right next to each other? Or why have a mall with 5 clothing stores next to each other? Gosh, who would ever think of putting competing stores right next door? Psst, here's a clue, they do it because you're likely to capture a large percentage of the competing stores customers right off the bat and they believe they can pull other customers to their store better than their competition.

Thanks for bringing two new businesses into Janesville! Investment in the community and job creation is what we need.

Sigma40, in addition to your other blind spots, you seem to have little idea how capitalism works. If CVS is right next to Walgreens, they can easily capture some of the "stop and grab" shoppers.
.
frogger, any commercial lease will specify the terms under which either party may break it, and obviously either party is also free to decline to renew a lease at expiration. As a lease-holder Cost Cutters did not own the property and seems to have relocated successfully, so I'm not sure what axe you're grinding here.
.
The Kohl's grocery site, I imagine, would have occupied the entire block behind the church, which is now a parking lot, a group home (the old Bostwick mansion), and some open space. Looks like there are clippings about this in the Janesville Room at the library.

“A hotdog establishment” was the Frost Top drive in, as many of us long time “townies” will recall. Among the tasty food and beverages was the delightful [in many folks’ opinions] Maid Rite Burger!
. . .
For reasons forgotten by this poster - - probably the coming of Kohl’s - - Frost Top relocated across the street to the curve on Kennedy Road (where the auto parts store is found today).
. . .
This writer would rather see the return of Frost Top rather than yet another pharmacy. Icy mugs of delicious root beer and Maid Rite burgers! Yum!

Isnt a CVS basically the same as Walgreens? What idiot would build one right across the street? Its like in Beloit where you have a Autozone right next door to Advance Auto, and a walk path between them. ??

"The remodeling meant a move for Cost Cutters"
because they jacked the rent sky high is what I heard. Which could be a rumor. OR they jacked it up so high they had to move and then they could tear it down for parking. Wish you could ever get the truth around here. I agree seems like a tight fit. Maybe they will fill all the pot holes in the Big Lots parking lot then?
"The move to Milton Avenue came eight years after Kohl's attempted to build a grocery story on Atwood Avenue between Court and Milwaukee streets. "
Where?? There are homes and a church and one small parking lot.

The 1.21 acres is about the size of the lot WEST of the drive running halfway through it, though they might need to push it a little bit toward Big Lots. For comparison Walgreen's is on 1.44 acres.

Isn't that parking lot alittle small to build a CVS in?
