TOWN OF ROCK — Marc Elliot was once kicked off a bus for shouting a racial epithet. Elliot didn’t do it on purpose. He has Tourette’s syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes involuntary motor and vocal tics.
Elliot was in high school when the incident happened on the Greyhound bus. He’s now an award-winning speaker who will present “What Makes Me Tic” Thursday at Blackhawk Technical College.
Elliot uses the story of his struggle with his handicaps to help others find their own path to tolerance, according to a news release.
After graduating in 2008 from Washington University in St. Louis, Elliot decided to embark on a nationwide speaking tour. He has spoken to audiences around the world and in 2011 was named College Speaker and Diversity Artist of the Year,
“Marc is one of the most sought-after speakers on the college circuit right now,” said Stephanie Williams, student services coordinator. “His story is incredibly inspiring, and we are really looking forward to hearing about how he uses his life experiences to convey fundamental lessons about the importance of tolerance."
Elliot will be available for photos and autographs after the presentation.

I truly believe these ideals are over spoken and the 'tolerance' thing is not as much of a problem as it is insisted to be. We have equality with simple human tendencies mixed in there. We are Americans and the less we speak of differences, the less there will be. What exactly is 'tolerance' anyway? A distraction perhaps? I would rather a person speak of self initiative and positive strife so people are equal without being propped up. The best kind of pride yet...
