Carroll E. Flanagan, Janesville (1911 - 2010)

Carroll E. Flanagan, 98, Janesville, formerly of Whitewater, died Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Huntington Place. He was born in Price County on Dec. 18, 1911, the son of William and Elizabeth (Bruekse) Flanagan. Carroll graduated from Oshkosh State Teachers College, and later earned his Master’s degree and Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Wisconsin. Carroll married Kathrine Snodgrass on June 3, 1939, in Merrill, WI. She preceded him in death on July 5, 2001. Together they raised two children. Carroll and his wife moved to Janesville in 2000. He began his long teaching career at a two-room grade school in Waukau, and taught at Merrill and Superior before moving to UW-Whitewater in 1946, where he taught Mathematics. While at UW-Whitewater, he served as Director of Secondary Education, Chairman of the Math Department, Treasurer of the UW-W Foundation, and faculty advisor of Sigma tau Gamma Fraternity. He retired in 1982, but continued to teach one course as a lecturer until 1990. He was a member of the Emeriti Faculty there. From 1965-1968, Carroll assumed duties in the Northern Nigeria Teacher Education Project and was stationed at Ilorin Teacher Training College, Ilorin, Nigeria. He volunteered for many projects in both Whitewater and Janesville. Some include: Food Booths at the Rock County 4-H Fair, Election Polls, Rock County Thresheree, Janesville Visitors Bureau, and an Advisor for Badger Care Recipients. He was active with the Blackhawk Golden K Kiwanis Club and helped with School Breakfast Programs, Meals-On-Wheels, Bloodmobile, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Rock Haven Bingo, K of C Tootsie Roll and Kiwanis Peanut Sales, and was a Hixson Fellow. He was a member of the Teacher Education Council, Wisconsin section of the Mathematical Association of America, the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Janesville Area Retired Teachers, Knights of Columbus (Past Grand Knight), St. Patrick’s Church , Whitewater and St John Vianney Catholic Church, Janesville.
Survivors include his two children, Carolyn (Don) Seierstad of Janesville and Thomas (Cindy) Flanagan of Sylva, NC; seven grandchildren: Galen (Michele) Steig, Lisa (Bill) Butters, Laura (Jackie) Steig, Jim (Kelli) Steig, Sarah (Brian) Bruhn, Andrea Vineyard and Jennifer (Shannon) Olive; four stepgrandchildren: Mark (Heather) Seierstad, Vicki (Amine) Barehmi, Debbie (William) Brown, and Stacey Darr; 20 great grandchildren: Jessica, Caitlin, Nicole, Samantha, Abby, Nolan, Kieyana, Nathan, Zoie, Rachel, Carson, Amy, Kevin, Zach, Noel, Jenna, Emily, Riley, Walker and Megan; a great-great-granddaughter, Hailey; four brothers: Don, Meryl, Dennis John (Maggie), and Bud (Phyllis) Flanagan; four sisters: Betty Freund, Bonnie Brayton, Elaine Brisky, and Jeanette (Bob) Lotz; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dr. Herbert and Cathlene Snodgrass; many, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and the love of his life, Kathrine; and four brothers: Bob, Milton, Clayton, and Leon.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH, Janesville, with Fr. Randy Timmerman officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Whitewater. Visitation will take place on Monday from 4 until 6 p.m. at the SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME, Janesville. Also a sincere thanks to all of Carroll’s friends who welcomed him into their midst when he moved to Janesville, and who stepped up when he needed help getting to meetings and church. Their many ards, calls, visits and prayers that reminded him he was loved and not forgotten.
