Owen "Oats" Haugom, Milton, WI (1923 - 2012)

Owen "Oats" Haugom, age 89, of Milton, passed away at home on Dec. 31, 2012, with family by his side. Oats was born on July 20, 1923, in Clark, SD, the son of Melvin and Grace (Bjerke) Haugom. Oats graduated from Milton Union High School in 1942. He proudly enlisted in the US Navy on Oct. 12, 1942, and served until Feb. 6, 1946. He married his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Cullen on Nov. 23, 1946. She preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 2006. He worked as a carpenter for many years with local contractors before becoming Postmaster for Milton Junction, and upon the merger of Milton/Milton Junction, became Postmaster for Milton. He retired from the Post Office in 1978. Oats was a resident of Milton Sr. Living since November 2003, and enjoyed an active life style despite his limitations with macular degeneration.
Oats served his community and church on various Councils and Commissions throughout his life. He was a member of the American Legion and was a past Post Commander. He was honored to be the Grand Marshal of the Milton 4th of July parade in 2009.
Oats is survived by daughters, Karen (Tom) Vick of Snellville, GA, and Ruth (David) Paetzold of New Port Richey, FL; son, Hal (Deb) Haugom of Milton; six grandchildren: Todd Vick, Kristen Vick, Jennifer Luettichs, Chad Paetzold, Erin Haugom, Elizabeth Zernicke; and seven great grandchildren. He is further survived by sisters, Ruby (Ed) Hill of California and Gloria (Fritz) Hudson of Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was further preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Larry; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Malcolm and Betty Cullen.
Services will be at 12 Noon on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH, Milton, with Pastor Jerry Amstutz and Pastor Richard Collier officiating. Full military rites will follow the service. Private family burial will take place after a time of luncheon. A visitation will be held on Saturday at the CHURCH from 10:30 a.m. until the start of the service. ALBRECHT FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATION SERVICES, MILTON are assisting the family with arrangements.
