Donald L. Walters, Brodhead, WI  (1922 - 2013)

Donald L. Walters, age 90, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Wood Crossing, Brodhead, WI. He was born on June 6, 1922, in Beloit Township, Rock County, WI, the son of Clifford and Frieda (Preusse) Walters. He married Winona Swearingen on Oct. 28, 1944, in Beloit. Don attended Crist Elementary School in Beloit Township and graduated from Beloit High School in 1940. He farmed with his father until 1960, then he operated a farm in Spring Grove Township, Green County, until 1968. He later farmed for 3 years in Marion County, IL. He worked several jobs after retiring from farming. His final job was with Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead. He was a member of the Brodhead United Methodist Church. Don had a passion for wood in any form; planting and cutting trees, working with lumber and building furniture. He was a life-long follower of the Chicago Cubs.
Don is survived by his wife of 68 years, Winona of Brodhead; two sons, Dean (Nancy Jones) Walters of Brodhead and Aaron (Joan Hooper) Walters of Estes Park, CO; a daughter, Marsha (Bob) Blair of Ashmore, IL; grandchildren: Natalie (Jeff) Ponkauskas, Dena (Lloyd) McKee, Nick (Mindy Haberman) Walters, Scott (Lisa) Blair, Eva (Jeremy) Ritchey, and Jordan Walters; great-grandchildren: Amanda, Derrick, Jessica, Dakota, Brant, Erin, Blair, and Meg. Don was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ray Walters; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Brodhead, with Rev. Ellis “Hap” Itson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead. Visitation will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan 13, 2013, at the D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD. A memorial fund will be established.
