MADISON, WI/JANESVILLE—Joan Agnes Okray, age 76, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in Madison, WI. She was born on June 8, 1936, in Princeton, WI, the daughter of the late Thomas Wargula and Charlotte Hudziak Wargula. Joan married Robert E. Okray in Wautoma, WI, on
Dec. 26, 1959. She was a resident of Rock County for over 50 years. Joan worked as a professional counselor in many capacities during her career but retired from Mercy Options in 2001. Joan had a strong desire to help and support others. She, along with her husband, helped to establish a religious education program for adults with cognitive disabilities in Rock County during the early 1970’s. Joan worked with the Displaced Homemakers program, and the YWCA where she was on the committee that set up the first Battered Woman’s Shelter in Rock County. She was an active member of her church community and helped to teach religious education classes to students of all ages. Joan was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Packers and Badgers and Chicago Cubs.
Joan leaves behind a daughter, Amy O. Pophal of Middleton, WI, and her son, Andrew (Jessica) Okray of Janesville, WI. Joan loved spending time with her three grandchildren: Sarah and Jacob Pophal of Middleton, WI, and Treya Okray of Janesville. Joan is survived by her sister, Patricia Boquist of Wautoma, WI. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.
A memorial service to celebrate Joan’s life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the ALL FAITHS FUNERAL CHAPEL 1618 E. Racine St. Janesville. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
