Judge Mike Holschbach was up to his shoulders in a deluge of cows today as he went through a variety of different classes in the pavilion. Those that knew Holschbach remarked that his judging style was "well thought out," and "pensive" but that meant fair and intelligent judging.

Ike Rebout of Clinton looks at what he called the "sad state" of the corn at the fair this year. "You know its a bad year when a 1st [place] looks like that." Droughts not only effected farmers this year but kids who were farming for show as well.

Elizabeth Kalk of Clinton 4-H takes King Arthur, a cornish rock hen, out for a stroll around the poultry barn. It was Clinton's turn to watch over the barn but Kalk took the opportunity to bring out King Arthur, one of the most sociable chickens she and her family have every seen.

It has been said that goats will eat anything, but for Ginger, the preferred food is Fritos. Jennifer Jacobus of Milton FFA has raised Ginger and her kid since both were babies. Ginger was 3 days old when Jacobus got her for her birthday.

Eleven-year-old Malcom Johnson takes his winter yearling, Ritzy, out for a stroll around the stock pavilion. Johnson was the sheep reserve champion overall this year, but works with his yearling and does chickens as well at the fair.

Cheyanna Becherer (15) of Brodhead lets her 5-year-old horse Daisy stretch her legs after a long day being cooped up in the barn. With the steer walking past all morning to be judged, Daisy couldn't get out and exercise like normal. Finally, she was able to put on a show in the afternoon thanks to hard work from Becherer who trained the horse herself.

Over and over 13-year-old Jared Quinn of Janesville took target at a steer head that was embedded in a bale of hay. Over and over Quinn would hit his target, missing rarely. For Quinn, showing pigs is part of the fair, but after working on his rope skills for 3 years, he has bigger aspirations. "I want to be a professional in the rodeo. I'll maybe have to fight bulls too." When asked if he had time for a few questions he said, "I'll be here all day."

Many might think meat when they think of what the animals at the fair provide, but for Laurie Pernot of Frene Creek Farm in Janesville, the end goal is all about fibers. The farm has a variety of sheep, alpaca, goats, and even dogs that are used for fiber and hand spun into yarn.

She might be a Grand Champion goat, but Onna, an intermediate kid, doesn't always behave. During the middle of judging the dairy goats, Onna jumped the gate and fell into Hannah Schilts' lap. "They're very attached," said Schilts, after giving her goat a kiss on the nose.

Monday was a busy day as kids moved their animals into pens at the Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds in Janesville. Andrew Keehn, left, found some didn’t move quite as fast as others as he struggled to move one of his hogs off the trailer. Monday’s heat compounded the difficulties of traveling from the town of Fulton, which caused exhaustion in a lot of the pigs. The prescription for the day proved to be a lot of water and cold showers for the overheated hogs.
