You know Janesville, I think most of us should be mature enough to drop any bitterness, jealousy or bitter sarcasm in these difficult times. There will always be individual abusers of ANY benefit, But as a whole the auto industry and its employees have been a big part of Janesville for many years. There is much nostalgia connected with this local plant. Lets not spoil the fond memories and lets not put all hard working people in one barrel and label. Now is not the time to wish ill will towards anyone.

My favorite memories of Zachows Bar are the great people, the great music, free darts on Monday's and the $2 beer.
It seems like so long ago........oh...wait that was last week.
That place is awesome !

hey woodsman, when was the last time that you paid 75 to 250 going to the doctor. I'm not refering to what the company pays for you, I'm referring to what you pay for yourself.
Get into my world of 300 dollar deductables per person in my entire family.

None of my friends ever beleived that there was a bar in the GM parking lot. Only the UAW workers can get away with leaving early for lunch, pounding a 6 pack, and then when there supervisor quesitons them, they want a committee call because they are being harassed. Ever other industry I know has a policy that would fire you (remember, you all got paid for your lunch with your 10 hour shift).
I wonder what all of the chriopractors are going to do now in Janesville now that employees cannot continually get out of a days work for a 10 dollar co-pay.
Concessions people, and don't tell me that you have already made some. Do what everyone else is doing and take a pay cut that means something. Even if you are making 23-24 per hour, you are still way ahead of the rest of the world. I got out of GM at a great time for me and my family.
And one more thing, fire the deadbeats. They bring you all down.

Okay...enough of the negative already.
I would like to hear some fun "Memories" of Zachow's Bar, and maybe if anyone knows the people in the photo?

Localboy:
Not sure where you got your "facts" from, but you are incorrect.
"Ma" and "Pa" Zachow bought the land and building in 1968, they sold to Jim and Mary Zachow-who have now sold to their son.
This business has been family owned and operated since 1968 and during that time NO OFFER has ever been made by GM or any other company to purchase the land or the building.
The "myth" that GM has tried to buy that land has been around for years and is simply untrue.

I know for a fact, that at the same time GM bought the Old 95, and that apartment building that stood on Delavan Drive (now the north parking lot)they approaced Zachows to purchase their property (not the bar - I should be in detail), and the Zachow's refused. GM didn't want that stigma of that bar to be confused as on GM's property. When Zachow's refused, GM changed the layout of the parking lot to deter workers from getting there easy. It would have been a lot cheaper to purchase the Zachow property, and that was GM's plan.

I love that place. Not to many taverns around where you can have a beer for $2.00.

To localboysince1968:
Your post is hilarious!
You are completely wrong when you state that the Zachow's refused to sell their property, at no point since Zachow's bought this property in 1968 has GM or any other company ever offered to purchase this property.
Jim and Mary Zachow sold the bar 3 1/2 years ago.
The current owner’s are not "hicks' (whatever that means); they are both Janesville natives and college educated. Oh and they have never even met Ms. Briarmoon.
You comments are weird and delusional.

Where is the picture of the workers walking by the Old 95 bar? People forget that was also just outside the property. GM purchased the Old 95 and razed it and made a parking lot. The Zachows refused to sell, and were more interested in the stories the reporters would write about workers going to their tavern to drink at lunch. The Zachows are nothing short of hicks. Not exactly positive fodder for the public. If you stop at their tavern, you might even run in to K. Andreah Briarmoon, as birds of a feather, flock together.

standbyothers:
You post is very nice.
Zachow's Bar has been family owned and operated since 1968.
The building itself has been in business since 1930.
From about 1933 to 1937 is was owned by Frank Knight and was called Knights Cafe. They served food, ice cream and alcohol.
It changed hands about 7 or 8 times before the Zachow family bought it around 1968.

They had a purpose and a time. They are a good family. Very respected with the workers from GM because of the help they gave when they needed it. They as well as the plant are a part of our history. Don't follow the undertone that they were a part of the failing plant they were just there making a living like everyone else. God bless them and the others we will get through this hard time. Our community is very strong.

I've known many a people to go there for lunch and then go back to work toasted to the plant!! And I'm being sarcastic when I say its the reason for GM's failure! That bar will all thats left when theres a big glowing hole left in a few yaers.

This tavern sits on its own property and is NOT "inside the gates of GM".
Also, this tavern has nothing to do with the financial problems of GM.
To think a tavern would be the cause of GM's finanical problems is ignorant.

A bar inside the gates of GM! No wonder the company is going down the tubes! I still love my Silverado though!! I cant imagine buying anything else!
