Federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon and those funds are badly needed to maintain (more likely slow the rate of deterioration) of the highway system.

whybesad...
If we even take a 3 month holiday of the gas tax, we would save .30/gallon. If the average family fills up a 15 gallon tank twice a week (2 cars), that would be a savings of $9.00/week. Over 12 weeks, that comes out to $108.00. Whoopty-do!! Obama is the only candidate with a credible solution by suggesting a windfall profit tax on oil companies to pay for a tax cut on the middle class and lower. This would help more people than a gas tax holiday as proposed by McCain and Clinton. Nice try, though.

The reason for the rebate is to pander votes.
The economy was NOSE DIVING in December/January; as the markets were in free fall. Congress and the President panicked, knowing it could cost them all their jobs come November. So they did this band-aid fix to hold up the economy till November elections. Of course the money given out in these rebates is all money the treasury does not even have; as the last budget was over $400 BILLION in the red, adding more to the trillions that we are in debt. This huge debt will ultimately lead to the dollar continuing to plummet further then it all ready has. Which, of course, drives fuel and commodities up higher, and higher. So all the money you get back will just be nullified in much higher energy, and food costs. Come November, the markets will fall like a stone, and panic will set right back in. While all the congress will laugh as they were all re-elected by duping the public.
.
Hope that helps answer your question.

Ours is going towards some credit card debt and rest into savings. I know that is not the point of it, but what can I say ... I've had it with living paycheck to paycheck ... at least if I save a little of it I can say I have a savings account!

Ours will be spent in Mexico, Belize or Aruba we haven't decided yet. A US airline will probably get some of it.

Maybe if the actually lowered the taxes we pay on gas and food etc. we wouldn't need a rebate check to stimulate the economy. The feds feds get 18 cents a gallon and the state gets 30 cents a gallon. When we spend our rebate check we are just paying sales tax on the stuff we buy anyway. The government wins no matter what.

Some checks are being intercepted by the state of wisconsin to pay for back taxes and child support. We understand about child support because that money can be used- is suppose to be used --for the kids and put back into the economy. How does taking the check for back taxes help the economy. Please explain!

Let's all chip in our rebates and buy us a Senator who will only vote for a balanced budget. If enough Americans bribed their Congressmen to fullfill their Constitutionally mandated primary function, the country could get back on track and settle all the petty little distractions our Republican and Democratic party masters have been using to keep us divided, such as abortion, gay marriage, immigration, etc.

Whats really sad, and rather humorous, is that Bush actually believes that this payout is going to stimulate the econonmy. Remind me again how this idiot was elected not only once but TWICE. And thank the good Lord he can't be elected AGAIN.

Even if you owe you will still get a check. The Rebate checks have noting to do with what you owe for 2007. You just had to file. Now, if you owe and you haven't paid yet, that could be a different story. The stimulus checks will be used to offset any outstanding tax debt. Just Google tax rebate info and they will give you many sites to find out all the scoop. I am using mine to reduce debt.

Hopefully everyone realizes that the good ol government has misleaded us again by saying we'd get 600/1200 for the stimulus package. It's all based on how much you made last year and the majority of people won't get the full amount!! Hope alot of people didn't spend it already and planned to put the check back into savings where you spent the money from, you'll be disappointed! I'm not sure of the site, but you can find out how much you're getting, mabee if someone knows, they can post it for people to find out.

The rebate is too small to make any real difference for anyone. It is simply a political ploy to make people think our government is doing something to help, but what it actually does is increase the federal debt. It simply takes money we paid in, and "lends" it back, only to have to be paid back in again later.

Medical bills and Power & Light bills. If health care costs and energy costs weren't so high, people would have money to spend. High health care and energy prices are trickling down to effect everybody and everything. That's what strangling the economy.

I'm paying off debt. I think the majority of people will do that. I don't see how that will stimulate the economy. However, if gas prices were cut in half that I'm sure would. While cash is always nice to have in hand; more needs to be done.

I do have 2 bills that I need to pay off first, since my car had decided to break down and then I plan on saving some for fair week, to take the place of 2-3 days my hubby will be off of work due to our daughters fair judging and our volunteer commitments to the 4H club. Other than that not much will be left over so maybe I will buy some plants for my yard with it.
