Our neighbor would let her grass get really tall. When she'd let her two Chihuahuas out to run, they'd turn into little antelopes, "pronking" around the yard. I'd say when you lose your Chihuahuas, it is time to mow.

Jakio,
I wasn't able to personally check as you well know, but I did have someone stop by earlier today. It's beyond "threeeeeeeee inchesssssssssss." Better start mowing ;-)

Actually they started rationing rice at about two weeks ago. Here in the 'good ole USA'. Don't worry if you missed it because I think you may see alot more of that (rationing) before long.

I wait until the lawn looks like it needs it. In the spring and fall there is usually ample rain and sun that it needs it twice a week. However in July and August when it's dry it may only need mowing once every couple of weeks.

Mentor, I think the post office has the same policy regarding fixing potholes in their parking lot - "when they can hear a car horn but can't see the postal patron's vehicle"

I would have to say 3 inches - but once a week is generally what we do. If we mowed every time our grass was higher than our neighbors we'd be mowing all week! Our neighbor mows 2-4 times per week and twice each time to make patterns in his lawn. To each their own, just don't complain that we don't obsess about our lawn.

Plant natives and don't mow at all. They don't require large amounts of water, like the non-native lawns most of you have. Having a perfectly manicured green lawn is no longer a status symbol. It's a symbol of vanity.

Once a week is the norm for us. But if thekai wants to make his way over here with a ruler, we'll mow every time he says "It's threeeeeee inchesssss!!"

We mow our grass once a week if needed. This has worked well for 14 years and no complaints.

Geothermal is a good idea, if you can afford the initial cost. In a new house is good but retrofitting an existing one adds to the price.

We're in a pretty bad recession right now, and my assessment is that things are going to get a lot worse before they get better.

acejd93 my father just built a brand new house and had geothermal put in, his gas and electric bills combined were only $80 all winter long.

With the gas prices the way they are, I notice alot of people, including myself, waiting longer to mow. I'm trying to figure out a way to save the old grass for this winter, the way fuel prices are going, I'll need to find an alternative way to heat my house. I bought a corn furnace 2 years ago and saved ALOT of money for heat but now corn is even expensive! I think We're all going to be in the poor house, see you there.

I grabbed a ruler just to be sure... two inches isn't tall for grass at all. I'd say the grass should be mowed at least once a week. I think in a week it will get to about three inches. There is no point in only mowing it if it's taller than your neighbor's.... what if you and all of your neighbors are lazy or incapable of mowing the lawn?

I would have picked "When it's high enough that you hear the mail carrier calling for help but can't see him", but it wasn't on the list.
