This is "old" but we lack the inner strength of character to draw lines, establish boundaries by which we live, and we have accepted so many things we should not have accepted, that pretty soon, anything goes and we all pay the price for it. I set a limit on what I would pay for gas two years ago. When gas went higher than that limit I would pay, I gave my vehicle away, and moved to Janesville so I could take busses where ever I had to go. When nothing is made in the U S A, and we have all our resources somewhere else, we stand for nothing because we dont make the decisions that should be made. One gas station owner up north shut down his station and took a loss because he had set a limit on what he would charge for gas. Back in the old days, this was called character, not car pooling or paying the cost no matter what it is. My not driving for two years was the best decision I have made in a long time. It costs six dollars a month to ride the bus around town, and five dollars a month to go to Beloit.
Hey when you are cruising down county A West real fast, watch out for Turkey. I hit one and was only doing 45. Busted the bumper, feathers all over and he still took off into the woods. GEE they are one tough bird!!
I do drive much less now that I am retired. However it still seems that whenever I do go I always have someone pushing me down the road. Even if I am 5 mph over, they still push. I guess there are many who do not care how much fuel they burn. I for one have better things to do with my money than burn it up by driving like a Nascar driver on the road!
I don't drive any more now, but I didn't really drive any less when prices were high. I live in the country so just to make a trip to the grocery store takes almost an hour round-trip. Therefore, I was already in the habbit of driving the bare minimum just to save on time, so when prices went up there really wasn't anything left for me to do. Also I ride a vanpool to work in Madison, but again, I had already joined the vanpool before gas went up so my driving habits have remained the same.
The only thing the gas prices have affected is my plans for my next car once my current one dies. I'm considering a smart fortwo car, unless hybrids can actually be made affordable in the next few years (doubtful).
My husband has to drive to Rockford anyway everyday for his job, there is no way to drive less. There are no jobs to be had in janesville right now. All the best to you unemployed people. I feel for you. We don't know how long our job will last either. You just never know! At least we have one for now. We do try to walk when we can. It's good for the heart and weight too.Gas is going down right now but it's not low enough for our econcmy! They think we should be grateful for this price? I remember a few years ago paying alot less than even the prices right now.
So, will this lower our grocery bill since the truckers will be paying less at the pump. Prices jumped at the grocers this year because of the expense of gasoline, so hopefully things can start to get more in line with what we can afford.
UNIDENTIFIED....I am so sad to hear about your unemployment. We are heading there too. :o( At least we all have a place to live, family and our health. Prayers to your for a happy holiday and a BETTER new year.
I've got no money to do anything once I get wherever I would have been going. Not to mention I've already sold my truck so now driving is nothing more than unsatisfying cramped transportation. In addition, I'm out of work so the gas prices won't help me much. My only hope is that this will begin to lower some of our heating bills and the like.
Are you kidding? Even if I chose to drive more, I couldn't afford to buy anything once I got to where I was going anyway. Sure, gas may be down, but unemployment is up! You can never have your cake and eat it too!! You can only sit and look at it.
The price of gas is only going to be lower for a little while, opec has allready moved their "emergency" meeting earlier so they can cut production to raise the price!
Since the oil shortages of the 1970s (Remember Carter?) I have been driving as much as possible in hopes of forcing American manufacturers to make more efficient/ alternative fuel cars. After "blood for oil" I even switched to an SUV thinking that might help the change occur sooner.
My family and I have adjusted our driving downwards and hope to continue to do so. The winter may present us with different options, but come spring I'll be using my bike even more. I love the fact that Americans drove billions of miles less this year than last! If we continue to drive less and develop alternative fuel sources, just imagine what will happen to the mideast and all huge-profi making oil companies! I wish Janesville could have a more-useable public transportation system like they have in Europe, but for now I'll just be glad for more bike lanes for everyone.
Metromilton, who are you actually blaming? You start out on the President but most of your comment was directed at the state(s). Therefore it is safe to assume you meant the Gov's and State Legislatures are to blame for the differences in prices around the nation. The President doesn't set state fuel taxes that I know of.
Love IT!! I have to drive back and forth to Madison 5 days a week. As you know there aren't any decent paying jobs here anymore with GM going down. Car pooling isn't an option yet. I've posted on the board where Im working and nothing. The shifts there are all different starting times.
gwendt...how have the last 4 years been any better than the 4 previous to 2004? We still have the same, lame president and his cronies....
The price of gas is much cheaper in other states that have LOWER GAS TAXES. Case in point....Last week in WI unlead was approx $3.29/gal. In the low gas tax state of Indiana it was $2.83. Same gas from the same refinery. Go figure!
The state of WI chooses to burden its citzens and businesses with high fuel/income/property taxes and then wonder why they have a "brain drain" and businesses are fleeing this tax hell....make sure that your vote on election day puts the right person in office that will reverse this situation.
Jakiao: Sorry, I did not know. I don't read enough of these I guess. I apologize. I am a Veteran of 33 years myself serving in both Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. From one veteran to another, be safe and Godspeed, thekai.
I have to drive for work purposes. It pretty much stays the same year round. On the personal driving I haven't changed a thing even when the prices were higher. I have driven slower on the highways to try and conserve fuel but, that's about all.
thekai: Where have you been? It has been at $2.99 for over a week and just dropped to $2.89 today. I was in Madison today and paid $2.85. Funny how it was only $1.69 a gallon when the price of oil was at less than $70 a barrel like it was yesterday. Someone still making a lot of money.
I'm still going to drive as conservatively as I did when gas was more expensive. We only have so much oil in the world, and we need to find and use good alternative sources of energy as quickly as possible. Is gas down to under $3.00/gallon in Janesville now?
I wish that was the case this was someone playing the market but I think it is worse. Take a look at the world right now. Look at the BBC, Arab News, and Toko News online you will notice everyone is cutting to a save mode.
I'd hardly claim life is great right now. The dollar is continuing to get weaker. Our economy is taking a nosedive with random break-neck pull ups every day for the whole month. The government has just printed $700 billion in bills, called it money, and gave it to banks. The government is now buying stocks in banks. And there's growing talk of chaos brewing in the very near future that is starting to come out of the underground and make it to the mainstream media. -- Life isn't great right now. We're standing at the edge of disaster, and every single decision made by the people running this country will determine whether or not we end up okay or if all hell break will loose. In my opinion, neither McCain or Obama really appear to have all the answers. Let's just hope the one who is elected keeps us on the safe side of the line.
after reading these comments, i didnt see any referring to the upcoming election. Isnt it funny how just before election, it seems LIFE IS GREAT. we jsut went through this phenomonon back in 2004 !!!
I am still driving like it is $4.00 a gallon. I have been taking that $1.11 a gallon difference, and keeping it in my rainy day fund cookie jar. P.S do not tell Obama I have this cookie jar.
As much as I love seeing the lower gas prices, I don't drive as much as I used to and I won't be picking up the pace again. This past summer, I drove across the country and saw the gas prices all over the nation. After having paid as much as $5.099/gal in the Los Angeles area, paying $3/gal yesterday was a very, very pleasant change. But I have already adjusted to a lower usage life style, and I don't mind it. So why go back to a lifestyle that costs me more money?
Honestly, I was thrilled to pay around $3 for gas. I actually called my wife last week when I filled up and said, "Yeah, under $50 for the tank!" That's pretty sad, I'm sorry to say. We won't be driving any more, just using the "extra" to get our credit cards and hopefully even our car payment paid off so next summer when the prices start to climb back up we aren't cutting things so close!
ok, gas prices are dropping... that's all fine and dandy, but look at all of the things increasing in cost... does anyone have a way to balance this to where everything could be more affordable for everyone?? if it were to drop down to below $2.50, then one may consider driving more, especially seeing how the unemployment rate is at an all time high due to plant closings and companies downsizing resulting in over excessive lay offs; and for those that do work, many find themselves having to put more in their gas tanks just to commute anywhere from a half hour up to 3 hours out of town to make ends meat... I'm not saying it doesn't help to have prices lower than what they were, but come on now...
Winter is coming so they will be getting alot more of my money for heating and such so I will try to save as much as possible now. Besides we all know if we start driving more the prices will just go back up "because of the demand." It was getting so bad I thought I was gonna have to try to get a second job to earn money to pay for gas to get to my first job. :)
