I bought the box 1 month ago cuz I didn't want to be shut out. Today, I got my $40 coupon in the mail. Will Walmart give me a $40 refund? What do you think?
Come join us in the technological age! Make sure to spend and spend just to get "free" TV only to learn that you must get a satellite dish to enjoy the guilty pleasure. I can't relate, but I feel for you.
Sadly,I to jump before comprehending exactly what things "are",and what things "are not"! This converter stuff joins that group. A "tech-nut" I am not. Why,I bought a digital video camera two months ago and I still can't use the thing. But this converter stuff keeps changing,so it seems,so I just went out and bought a new tv on my card and am searching for the wall outlet mongst the cobwebs. Wishes, itelluwhat.
i don't know why everyone is complaining, if you only want basic channels then call the cable company order the basic and call it a day, if you have the basic cable you don't need a box and you don't have to worry about the change over
I am so sorry everyone for wasting your money. I tried, I really did. But I got TWO boxes in anticipation, and it isn't the TV or the box at fault, it's my antenna AND my location. I am by the river in the woods, in a valley with lots of 'obsticals'.
I tried and tried and tried. I tried a digital-specified rabbit ear, I tried an outdoor antenna on a tower. I even SWITCHED out antennas on the tower!
But alas, no go, for noone shared the secret with me about how weak the signals are, how impossible it is for my location, that a UHF wiring isn't effective, that IF I got a signal I'd have to continually adjust it and that it is so directional. "just get a box". Indeed.
I am on unemployment, I know money is tight, I didn't mean to waste the taxpayers money. Maybe after a good thaw I can get atop the roof and try a different cable, which I'll need to buy. Then a new tower to get over the obsticals. Hmmmm.... another 75ft should do it.
NAH!!! WAY too much trouble! And I so cannot afford such costly upgrades. Besides, my main TV just went out and I am left with one the size of my face. It just is not worth my continued trouble to make the purchase of the boxes even worthwhile to you, the taxpayer. It MUST be my fault for being so optimistic and ignorant after hearing those commercials.
It won't be pushed back anymore.. Already been pushed back a few times and Hawaii is already on digital this month, a month early. Parts of the USA are already on digital also for testing. If you don't have a converter box by now you deserve to have a black screen on 2/17. You had enough warning and enough help from the government to fulfill the requirements. It's about time people paid the price for NOT being responsible and NOT getting bailed out once again! Only 53% of the people who received the coupons even redeemed them! You had enough warning, now suffer the consequences.
Part of the new government stimulus package is more vouchers for converter boxes. Not sure when that will pass though. Personally I think the government would have been better off just making the boxes and giving them to consumers instead of all the overhead involved with making vouchers, distributing, redeeming, profit for electronic manufacturers, etc. and the boxes were still available for $45 and with a $40 voucher, well you do the math. They were not doing us any favors.
momof5 said: I'm still outraged that the government sent out hundreds of thousands of thousands dollars worth of vouchers to people who didn't need them (the converter boxes). ------------------------ The government sent those vouchers only to those that applied for them. They cost almost nothing to send out, but they cost taxpayers $40 per voucher when redeemed.
what i find funny is that the us govt. makes this law to change. but all the converters are made in a foreign country. a lot of u.s. money going to china. For what?
momof5: Yes, the government did send out thousands upon thousands of these vouchers but they only cost the government if you use them. I did send for one because I have a little 5 inch tv that I use in the kitchen that picks up all kind of stations with a built in antenna only to find out the converter box will not work with this type of tv. Bummer. It will not be used and there will not cost the government any money. In fact I am trying to give it away so it can be used by someone who really needs one. I will miss my little tv. Has anyone had trouble picking up NBC with the converter box?? A friend of my has. Thanks

I wouldn't be shocked to see this "launch" date get pushed back yet though. Haven't they been trying to do this for sometime and it kept getting put back more and more?

I never quite understood why people are willing to pay for cable TV when an antenna is (nearly) free
