Unfortunately, we are spending $72 million on brick & mortar instead of human education. The buildings will be there for a long time to become only partially used. If you think about it, we only use those buildings for education 18% of a year's worth of time. Our educational system is built around one industry - aggriculture in 1900. Think about it. How could we bettter use TIME not brick & mortar to prepare for future industries??

In 5-10 years it is quite likely that the city of Janesville will be sitting with 2 high schools with about 1100-1200 students in each building. With the age of the current staff, they could be looking at not replacing teachers that would be due to retire during that time span. They would have to monitor it very carefully to insure that class sizes do not get out of hand, but, adjusting the number of staff to the number of students in their buildings could be the solution to their problem.

IMO-I think a hiring freeze would be the best route to go. That way no one loses their jobs.

Invest in education instead of looking for cuts. Especially in these economically difficult times, we must maximize our kids' chances for success and provide a magnet for businesses to relocate. An excellent education system is perhaps the top factor for businesses when deciding where to locate. Unfortunately, the Janesville School District keeps cutting while its reserve funds grow every year. The District should stop cutting, and start investing in the education system that will support Janesville's resurgence.

Cut administration. If you believe, as many people do, that schools have gotten worse since the good ol' days, then you need to take a good look at the ballooning administration. We need teachers, and even smaller student/teacher ratios. We do not need this endless array of administration.

You're absolutely right, whythink. I see students needing the services our school social worker, counselors, etc., provide even more this year than before, it seems. I hope others recognize the importance of these people to our students--the future of this community.

Right now, more than every positions like counselors, social workers and alternative education teachers are needed in this district. I also believe the arts should be very protected. With all the chaos in theis community, country and at home for many of these kids they need ways to connect and be successful at schools.

Rock River Charter School, the TATE Center, CRES Academy, SWS, All-Pro, need to continue to be safe places for children to get an education.

Counselors and Social Workers are going to be needed as our children deal with the stresses from home. Teachers who teach the "specials" the arts, need to continue to provide our students with ways for our children to express themselves.

More children are going to struggle with school as they watch their families struggle at home. We need to remember to be sensitive to their needs. now is not the time to cut alternative programs, social workers and counselors.

Put an end to all non-essential purchases such as subscriptions to the Janesville Gazette.

Hopefully the choice to cut positions won't remain the majority mindset for long. Teachers are a necessity, every one of them, and they certainly could use your support now Janesville. Or perhaps some of you feel they haven't had it hard enough yet, like during the contract negotiations...? Just wondering.

How about they use some of the healthcare funding they've been withholding from the teachers-how many millions of my tax $$!?

Don't quite get this question...why would you only be able to do one of these...why could you not consider doing a combination?
