I think Wisconsin should simply allow any community who's citizens want it, to build a casino. The state should then regulate the casino's much like they now do in Vegas. . The state should pass legislation to make sports betting legal. The economic boom created would be beyond one's imagination, and the taxes the state collected from it would make the lottery look like child's play.
The city of Janesville provides the rental help, not the county. Echo provides food and gas cards. Welfare to work program provides car repairs, if you have a car and the amount of money they give people is about $300 a month, not nearly enough even to eat on. So you do your own research before you act like a know it all.
I was not sprouting off, so excuse me. Hannah always thinks she knows everything. Sure there is the welfare to work program which you are talking about but it is no longer welfare. These people have to look for work diligiently, car or no car, and they have a certain amount of time to find one. As for the other things rental assistance is provided by the city not the county. And also, they can get $20.00 gas cards once a month at Echo! Could you live on that? I know I couldn't. So plant your lips on my big cheeks and leave me alone!!!
Justme46...the county DOES provide "money", it's called the W2 program. It also provides "money" like rent help and car repair loans. So, before you start spouting off, do some research, first.
Misterlippy, as a matter fact I have heard of Manifest Destiny, it's still being used today. Only now it's called "eminent domain". States, Counties, and Municipalities use it all the time to acquire land for highways, buildings, sub-divisions etc. Many times the land owner is not interested in selling, yet the Gov't. still acquires the land. Does this mean in 150 years our descendants will have to clean up our mess? I don't think so. Indians claim to be good economic partners. Go ask the resort owners in northern Wis. about Indians as good economic partners. Ask them how many customer reservations and money they lost when these people refused to negotiate a lower the SPEARING limit of walleye and muskie. Get your head out of the sand lippy, I have some land in Florida you should be interested in.
Both slavery and Manifest Destiny were allowwed, approved, and legal in their respective times. There is no approved reason NOW for the discrimination against huntnfish and others like him.
huntnfish - Have you ever heard of something called "Manifest Destiny"? Your claim of being "discriminated" against is short sighted and comical. The American government decimated the Native American people upon their decision that it was an ethical right to take nearly all that they had. I'm not a bleeding heart liberal, but I think many of their "rights" had/have been taken away over time. Has this happened to you? Man up and quit your whining.
Helge - "To(o) bad more pea(o)ple can't figure it out." What exactly do you mean? Your butchering of the English language suggests to me that your opinion may not be supported by an extensive background in a little something I like to call "education."
Why do Indians have more rights than non-Indians? Non-Indians can't build a casino anywhere in Wis. Why do they have the right to? Indians can spear walleye and muskie and shoot deer out of season. They also receive Gov't assistance every month. I'm being discrimanated against and it's not right. They shouldn't have more rights than non-Indians. I'm against this until I have the same rights.
Once again, somebody is messing with the tally numbers here. There is no way they flipped completely like this without the help of somebody in opposition to the casino. Too bad! Like mentor397 wrote, the residents already gave the OK for this project and are only waiting for the feds (and the state) to give their nods.
Bah, they already had the vote and Beloit's wishes were the ones that were counted. As far as I'm concerned, most of this is just sour grapes from Janesville that Beloit might pass them up. Beloit has long been both the armpit of the state and the armpit of Rock County, but here is a chance to bring money from out-of-state tourists on a convenient location right off the highway and right over the state line.
As far as the local bums, better they spend the money here in Rock County gambling than up in the Dells.
Just let them build the darn thing. If they want it bad enough, get them to pay the back taxes and get a way to make sure they pay in the future and give them an "or else." Check with Baraboo and see if they are that bad of a neighbor and if they are a positive or negative for their community. Have any of you been there...they have oodles of jobs..bring the Illinois people up here to give us their money that they get from us for their tolls, and it is always a positive to finally have the low income people help pay a share of the property tax (by them going to the casino.) I use to be against these things, but they have their benefits. Better using money there than buying drugs for some people.
Hannah, how many times do I have to tell you....THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS WELFARE ANYMORE. The state provides quest (food stamps) and medicaid, NOT MONEY. And leave the old ladies out of it, if you are the age you say you are, you don't have far to go. I think the casino is a good idea, get the money out of Madison and bring it here, closer to home!
I DON"T LIKE THEM... They come into an area , and promise to "Give Back to the Community", for what price.. It's (Again the tax payers holding the bag" The Ho Chunk Nation is one of the most notorious tax evaders in our state.. They Owe our state millions and millions of dollars from the other casinos they have in the state,, They have withheld Money from the state for over 7yrs with out paying anything (Taxes, revenue, and Unemployment, Workers comp, just to name a few).. We need another Casino like we need a hole in the head
I can "afford" to go (as long as I set limits). For 95% of people, it's a harmless diversion from life. There's gonna be that 5% who "over-do" in most everything (eating, smoking, drinking, driving fast, gambling, etc etc etc). The casino had better have video keno!
this is a good way to funnel money into the hands of the casinos and away from the thieves that run the grocery stores etc. bravo to our reps if they get this done.
HEY ENUFSAID- Not everyone made a vocational error like yourself and has to ask if 'you want fries with that' at their job. If unemployment is at 15%, that mean EMPLOYMENT is at 85%. Go make me a cone.
I do not see why just tribal owned casinos are allowed. Gambling is no less intrusive to our society when owned by the tribes, than when owned by anyone else. Had that been allowed the Delavan Dog Track would still be in business. Until parity and fairness exist in casino ownership in WI, I am against all casinos in WI.
not only could they still smoke now theyll gamble too and have to still be on welfare for income and food cause we cannot use the cigs or gamble money for food. (those who ABUSE I am speaking of)
So once the statewide smoking ban takes affect, once they open their doors the areas locally owned bars will suffer greatly. The Indian Casinos are exempt from the smoking ban. I feel sorry for the local owners on that note. However, long term the casino should be good for our local economy. Bring more people to the area to see the shopping potential. Maybe?
So let me get this straight...Casino gambling establishments are only allowed to be run by one group of people who are now allowed to set up camp anywhere they wish and siphon money away from our community and we should be happy because they provide jobs for dealers? Oh I'm sorry, Beloit is going to become the next Las Vegas? I personally am tired of the old argument that any job is a good job. What is the cost of that job to the community? A casino will take a lot more than it contributes. Just because the "Ho-Chunk nation" produces some feel good commercials and overstates the amount of good deeds they do for the people of Wisconsin means we should let them set up shop anywhere. Heck, let them set up a casino in the old ice arena.
I have been for the Casino all the way, and just like going to bars or whatever if you dont like them DONT come...they have no more crime than anything else and prob. less
Maybe, just maybe a casino will be here in Beloit. How many year(s) away? For those that oppose a casino, dont visit. Please no tired arguements of "bad elements",crime, abuse the less able to afford, etc, mantras. All aspects of our area need jobs, income the casino would generate.
