Whitewater drowning victim identified
The Walworth County Coroner's Office identified the 9-year-old victim in a drowning in Whitewater's Mill Pond Thursday.
Authorities believe Brent L. Aldrich was walking to Washington Elementary School when he went out onto the ice and either fell through or went in into an open area near the dam, Chief Deputy Coroner Thomas F. Miller said.
The cause of death is accidental drowning, Miller said.
Police found him near shore about 4:45 p.m. near the dam along Main Street. He was pronounced dead at Fort Atkinson Memorial Health Services.

The school only called her cell phone at 9am and left a message, no other emergency contacts were called, I know because I am one of them. If the school persisted to leave a message with a person not just a message maybe just maybe my grandson would not of been in that freezing water for as long as he was. (or in a different case if he was grabbed by someone they would not of had him for 8 hours.) The only blame on his tragic accident is Brent, he knew better not to go to the water or the ice and unfortunatly he did, we love Brent very very much and our hearts are broken, we will miss him every single day. Some policies should be changed with the school, crossing guards, etc....along with signs along the inviting shore line of that nasty pond/lake. The Whitewater police though once they knew he was missing acted very very fast and actually found him within 45 minutes, my hat goes off to them for doing a job so well, I know I could never do their job. Thank you to all that has helped and prayed during this difficult time.

Yes it is a tragedy. And our hearts and prayers go out to the family. But this can and should be a learning experience for all so maybe another tragedy may be prevented. Granted, in this case even if the parents were notified promptly, the unfortunate incident was already history and nothing could have reversed that. BUT, I would certainly hope that all schools would have a better system in place than just leaving a voice mail when a child doesn't show up. At a minimum, if no contact is made in a timely fashion, the police should be notified to do a "welfare check" which is a very common occurrence. The are many other procedures that could and should be implemented.
This is not meant as criticism about the school or anyone else. Merely to bring attention to the fact that more can and should be done.

The school did contact the family. They left a voice message on a cell phone. No other contact was made. So in a way you are both correct. An attempt was made, but a half-hearted one.

Please, this is a big enough tragedy for the family, and any family who has lost a child, let's not argue and make things worse. To Brent's family, our thoughts and prayers are with you!

butteryfly, if you had read the previous articles on this you would know the parents of this boy were called earlier in the morning and notified that their son did not show up to school.

The school did their job. Please don't make assumptions because it is not included in the article.

So in the period of 9 hours the school didn't notice Brent missing nor could they contact the police or his parents.
