Jackson School principal recommended

By Shelly Birkelo ( Contact )   May 8, 2008 - 9:09 a.m.

If the Janesville School Board approves Supt. Tom Evert’s recommendation at its May 12 regular board meeting, Dr. John Walczak will become the next principal at Jackson Elementary School.

He would replace Pat Johnson, who is retiring June 30.

Walczak has been assistant principal at Edison Middle School since 2000. Before that he was a middle school guidance counselor and assistant principal for the Whitnall School District from 1996 to 2000 and a teacher for the New Berlin School District from 1990 to 1996.

Walczak was picked from a pool of 20 applicants. A selection committee, made up of several Jackson teachers, directors, principals, coordinators, support staff and a parent, interviewed six applicants.

These three were finalists: Walczak; Veronica McMahan, learning support teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School, Janesville; and Heidi Ochoa, a second-grade teacher at Kennedy Elementary School in Janesville. The finalists were interviewed with several Jackson staff, Evert and Dr. Steven Johnson.

If hired, Walczak would assume his new position July 1 and it is recommended he receive a salary of $93,086 for a 218.50-day contract.

man, oh man! I sure hope it's not Ochoa! This is the same teacher (under her maiden name "Starks")that we got rid of over here! We didn't feel a stripper was the best infuence for our kids.... I guess Janesville doesn't care that much! Good luck to you all. She'll have those kids on ADD & ADHD meds in no time (helps her control them). I mean, c'mon -- out of 12 kids, 8 of them needed medication?? Good luck, Janesville!

$93,000 plus. And the community gripes about how much teachers make. The average teacher in Janesville makes $40,000 something, and a beginning principal makes $93,000 plus.
