Vechinsky resigns from school board

By Frank Schultz ( Contact )   June 10, 2008 - 9:28 p.m.

JANESVILLE -- Longtime Janesville School Board member Dennis Vechinsky resigned from the board tonight.

Vechinsky stood and read a short statement in the middle of the board meeting and then left the boardroom.

"I can't do this anymore" was the only reason he gave to the board. But afterward, Vechinsky said he didn't like the way some other board members were questioning the administration, delaying action and not getting work done.

The Janesville Gazette will have more on this story in Wednesday's paper.

No, I didn't teach with him. He taught my sons.
I thought highly of him as a teacher and a person. But that way of resigning was not a class act.

I just watched the taped school board meeting.
Mr. V's timing was classless.

I like Mr. V. His forte' was teaching. He entered politics with good intentions. It just wasn't meant to be.

Mr. V Was the last of our heros on this board. I have known him since 3rd grade and he does not mix words or put up with the BS these kids think they are throwing at the teachers these days..... AND AS FAR AS HIRING ANOTHER PERSONB TO TEACH THESE TEACHERS ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? come on if you have not been trained all the way you probably should'nt have gotten the job to begin with!

Vechinsky will definetly be missed as a leader in this community and a past educator. He touched the lives of many children in the district through his years. Best wishes!

I agree JDowd. I truly believe that Mr. Vechinsky has the best interest of education in mind. Politics are very powerful in any organizational body. Too bad it has become prevalent in the school district and board, but if one has the conscience to resign rather than continue with a direction that cannot be followed, more power to him!

I have a great deal of respect for Dennis Vechinsky and he has earned my vote each time for election. The board will miss his experience and expertise.
My best wishes to Commissioner Vechinsky.

What great news! Vechinsky will NOT be missed. It was very clear that he was a 'Yes' man to Evert, which is probably why he resigned. He didn't like that there are board members who do what they were elected to do - get all the information from both sides before making a decision. I think he would have voted for anything that Evert put in front of him, no matter how outlandish. Let's get someone like Cullen to replace him!! Good riddance, Dennis Vechinsky!!!

The Gazette is way to pro-administration they give you only the story in a way the district wants it to be portrayed. Shame on the gazette for not giving both sides of the story.

Can't wait to hear more on this story! I am a little perplexed about his statement about the board questioning administration and delaying action on the administration's proposals. Isn't that their job? I, for one, didn't vote for school board members that would simply be "puppets" for the administration. To respond to howardzinnfan, you make it sound like Vechinsky supported the teachers in the last round of negotations. From what I've been told, he was one of the most vocal about teachers paying a portion of their health insurance. This, after he had MANY surgeries paid for by the teacher's health insurance plan. Also, I was a little leary of his immediate response to the whole Rashkin incident regarding the 50% staff development position. He completely supported it, while I know a lot of community members thought that it smelled a little fishy.

It is about time he came to his senses. It is only about 3 months to late for all the Janesville teachers who voted "no" on the contract. I hope now that Dennis can come foward to tell the community how the board and administation likes to operate.
