Charter cable changes delayed

By Frank Schultz ( Contact )   July 25, 2008 - 10:14 a.m.

JANESVILLE

Charter Communications is postponing plans to add new channels and move its public-access channels to the 900s.

Charter customers in the Janesville area recently received a brochure outlining the changes, which were to take effect Aug. 12.

Charter spokesman Tim Vowell said today that the changes won’t happen for several more weeks. A date hasn’t been set, but Vowell said it may happen sometime between Sept. 16 and Oct. 1.

Charter customers who have digital TVs with cable-card capability or a QAM tuner won’t have to do anything to receive the updated service. But those with early digital TVs or the even older analog TVs would need a digital converter box in order to watch TV after the change takes place.

The box rents for $5 a month, but Charter will likely give the boxes to customers who need them for free for a limited time before they begin charging them, Vowell said.

More information about the changes will be part of an article in Saturday’s Gazette.

If my power goes out then my cordless phones don't work anyway...ever heard of cell phones? Unlimited long distance still the best way to go and no charge for extra features. I am a satisfied customer. By the way, BUNDLE is spelled "le" not "el"

the charter bundel sucks. if your phones hooked up with them. anytime the cable or power goes out you have no phone and how can you call them if your phone isnt working. this isnt good if you need it in an emergency.Ill be glad when AT&T comes in our area

Charter Bundle still the cheapest way to go. Looked at all other options, can't beat their price. Customer service is sometimes slow, what isen't...tried calling AT&T Wireless lately?

I wish I could get DISH!!!!!!!!!! I have so many things to say about Charter. I can't get anything other than Charter in Edgerton though... I work from home and I need my internet however every week I am on the phone with Charter fixing of trying to figure out something with our TV or internet. The month of June I was on the phone with them for 350 minutes. Can you imagine that?? So I have nothing good to say about them.

I just switched back to Charter from satellite tv. I was so tired of the picture going out in each storm and considering all the storms we've had, that was quite often. A few things I don't like about Charter, but they are minor. As for internet, DSL is the way to go. Charter has too many slowdowns.

There are a lot of Internet choices out there. Beware of Inwave though. The service is poor and the customer service is even worse. DSL should be fast enough for most people. I had it a few years ago, and I loved it. I now have wireless Internet from T6 Wireless. I don't think they are in Janesville though.

3BD- I use AT&T. They're DSL, so not as fast as Charter, but I have no complaints with them.

Irish-Mafia78,
I know how to set parental controls, and I do watch tv with my kids. Do not be flippant here. But there are still going to be times that my children might come across the channels.I do not think it is appropriate to put adult channels in between two children's channels that was once previousely a children's channel.
I do not know about you, but I have an 11 year old son that can crack all my codes for parental codes that I have ever had.

3BD--we also switched from Charter to DISH about 8 months ago & are very happy. We now have "dry loop" internet or "naked internet" which is through AT&T even though we do not have a house phone. (We have cell phones for everyone in the family.) We have been VERY, VERY happy since we made the switch. VERY occasionally, the picture goes out when it is raining very hard, but that is the ONLY time. Great picture, lower price, more channels--my only regret is that we waited so long to switch.

It's called parental controls. Or, watching tv with your kids. If you can't do one, do the other.

That's great, but what about (I think) it is BET or one of the MTV channels they are putting in between the kids channels in the 50's? I do not want my young children viewing that when they are trying to get to theior favorite cartoons!

I wish Charter would address the "delay" issue they have with their high speed internet service. Not so high speed when the service keeps cutting out.

I switched to Dish Network a while ago. Best move ever. I can now watch ALL Cubs, Brewers, Blackhawks games, both those on WGN and those on Comcast, never an outage problem, no price hike since I signed up 2 1/2 years ago, and great picture. Why anyone would stay with cahrter is a mystery to me.

Another change that will only benifit the financial profits for Charter
