Favre not reporting to camp yet
GREEN BAY
Quarterback Brett Favre said he will not report to training camp today as he gives the Green Bay Packers some time to work on his exit from the team, according to a story posted on SI.com’s Web site early this morning.
“I had planned on reporting for the start of Packers training camp Sunday, but Ted Thompson asked if I would give him a couple of days to try to get the situation resolved. I agreed to do that,” Favre told Peter King.
“I don’t want to be a distraction to the Packers, and I hope in the next few days we can come to an agreement that would allow me to continue playing football.
”I’ve also spoken with Commissioner (Roger) Goodell a couple of times this week, in hopes that he could be some sort of arbitrator in this. I hope he can be,“ Favre said.
Favre told Goodell he and the team were ”at an impasse“ and that he wanted his outright release.
Also, Favre freely admitted he spoke to both Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress and quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell but flatly denied they did anything that amounts to tampering.

I hope the Packers wake up and let Brett Favre play. Yes, he might be a bit flaky, but he's entitled since he's given so much to the team. Aaron Rogers should be happy he gets to play with one of the all-time greats.

The other teams are not interested because he is 38 years old and is at the very best, a short term temporary fix with an expensive price tag. Plus they are waiting to see if the Packers cave and just release him.

If Thompson could swallow his pride and allow Favre into camp to at least compete for the position, the situation would resolve itself.
If Favre could swallow his pride and report as a backup he could be a valuable mentor for Rodgers, Brohm and Flynn, if he can somehow lose his reclusive nature and work with the young guys - then the 12 plus million price tag for a backup would be more palatable.
Neither of those things will likely happen so this will drag on becoming more ugly by the day.
ESPN did report this morning that Dallas is interested in Simms from Tampa as Romo's backup. If that deal does down, who knows, maybe Tampa will make a play for Favre.

Perhaps, other teams in the NFL are not interested in Brett, because of his constant flip-flopping and not because the price the Packers are asking.

I think people are afraid to talk about it. What is there to say. It's a waiting game at this point. My neighbor told me last night that New York has come right out and said they do not want him.
They are asking to much for him. Not that we don't love him and think he is worth it. Other teams have to be careful in what they give.
Unless Greenbay drops what they want for him I don't see him being traded. I think Thompson said they wanted as much as they did for him hoping that no one would want him and that he would stay retired.
I say come on to camp Brett, show them just how 'good' Aaron Rogers is not.
I see for once Aaron Rogers has been very careful in what he says, instead of just running his mouth.

Neither Walker or McKenzie have amounted to much since they left Green Bay. Sure they got more money (and playing time) but they didn't get a "ring", now did they?
.
I don't have a problem with paying Grant more money; he has undoubtedly earned the right to negotiate for that. However, I have a problem with ALL athletes who hold out just because their pockets, they feel, should be lined even more. That's not a good message to be sending to today's youth. And, yes, Grant was essentially their only source of a running game. Who's fault is that? Who does the drafting and free-agency negotiating for the Packers? Fire him! Oh, that's right. It's Ted Thompson....GM extraordinairre.

The Packers want nothing to do with Favre. They “have moved on”.
The Packers want Rodgers as their starting QB.
Favre wants his release so he can play with a team of his choosing, probably the Vikings.
The Packers won’t release him because it’s bad business to not get anything for last year’s pro bowl QB.
Other teams aren’t interested in giving up what the Packers want so a trade is unlikely.
If the Packers don’t want him, can’t trade him and won’t release him, why not trade him to Minnesota. The Vikings may be willing to give up something for his services plus they have a penchant for ex-Packers (Longwell, Sharper, Ferguson, Bevell, etc). I know Minnesota is a good team in the same division but if all of your trust is in Rodgers as your starter why does it matter? If Favre isn’t needed on your team what makes him so valuable to not trade him to a division rival?
If he is on the Vikings for the first game, blitz the heck out of him before he is comfortable with a new system and has had time to work with far more inferior stable of receivers than he is used to dealing with.
C’mon Ted, grow a pair and send your biggest headache a couple of hundred miles west. You may get something big in return or it may be the last nail in your coffin. Dare ya!

MOMO - All I'm saying is that the Packer's low ball offer to Grant, the ONLY THING they have close to resembling a running back, was an insult. None of the other backs did anything in the first half of the year but Grant showed some real promise in his performance over the last several games - same system, same line. A starting back in the NFL deserves more than league minimum. I can't attest to his personality because I don't have the luxury of sniffing jocks up close and personal as you apparently do.

There is change blowin' in the wind tonight, folks. I can feel it happening. (Either that or Thompson is up to new tricks.) He is actually taking some of Favre's requests to heart: Thompson has told the media that no Packer players --- including Brett --- have or had Packer-issued phones. And, now, Thompson states that one should not fault Favre for changing his mind about retirement. Also, unbelievable as it may seem, but Mr. Puppetman (Coach McCarthy) is talking about Favre returning to the team in some capacity. Okay, you guys tell me what the hell is going on now?! I lost nearly all trust in Thompson or McCarthy about 10 days ago.

jvldss: Ryan Grant? Packers? Screwing him? Please tell me you're rose colored glasses aren't a staple in your wardrobe and you just forgot to take them off today! Grant had a good 6 games, and that's being liberal. He's being a PUNK and screwing the Packers by holding out for more money. Javon Walker did it. Mike McKenzie did it. Neither of them won their battles....and look where they are now :) You, Ryan Grant, have a good 1 or 2 YEARS and then come and renegotiate yourself a multi-million dollar contract. I've met Ryan Grant up close and personal a few times. He's a pompass little boy playing a big man's game. He was full of himself after his 2nd "break out" game in December. It's sad that for as much as a 4 year degree costs at Notre Dame, they require a class on tact and humility prior to graduation. I guess money can't buy it all, Ryan!
.
Greg Jennings, IMO, is the epitome of what the Packers' organization stands for. He had an AWESOME YEAR (not just 6 games), is a class act off the field and completely grounded. But yet, he's not holding out for more money. Crazy how that works. DD is the same.
.
Thompson was a former NFL player back in his hay day. He came to GB from Seattle where he is VP of ops. He had been in the GBP organization prior as director and assistant director of player personnel. While he had been with the GBP organization prior for 7 years, he hasn't held a position for longer than 4. He also took a 20 year hiatus from the NFL. Was he qualified to take over as GM in Green Bay? I think anyone could do a better job than who Teddy replaced...Mike Sherman. Ick.

The Packers brass needed Favre to make up is mind so they could plan accordingly for the future, both short term and long term. They wanted him back, they tried to bring him back in March, but he retired. Rodgers has been preparing as the starter since then and worked as the starter with the team in mini-camp. Then the Packers drafted two quarterbacks to back-up Rodgers. Then, when the wishy-washy limelight craving Favre changes his mind, the Packers are supposed to drop everything, throw out months of work and welcome the quitter back with open arms. NO - this is a business and the organization needs to be more concerned with the future rather than just this season. Good luck Brett. Thanks for the memories.

"I am guilty of retiring early and there is a reason for that," Favre said, according to an excerpt provided to The Associated Press. "And the major issue is 'Why did he retire,' and 'He asked for a release because he doesn't want to play in Green Bay.' That's not true. And I hope people are hearing this and saying 'OK, that clears it up."
Favre told Van Susteran he was "never fully committed" to retiring and felt pressured by the Packers to make a decision. It's a notion Packers general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy deny, according to Fox News.

The three stooges (Thompson, McCarthy and the invisible man Murphy) are trying to protect their"investment" in Rodgers. He has a few years experience in the system and should be ready to take over barring injury which is a big if. If they give in to Favre, the Packers lose Rodgers to free agency next season and will get nothing for him. Then Favre, will most likely retire next season (months of drama again) leaving the Packers with Brohm or Flynn at QB next season. It does make good long term business sense to do this. I know the Favre worshippers want the guy to play forever but at 38 his days are numbered. Why not try get a draft pick for him. Those fans thinking Favre will lead them to a superbowl next season might want to consider that they are without Grant, their ONLY running back, two of their defensive linemen and are hoping a rookie tight end will outplay Franks who was released.
Will Rodgers lead them to the Superbowl next seasn? No. But the hall of famer, walk on water Favre only took them to two, winning just one. It is time to move on and be done with all this fricking drama.

No team is desperate enough to give up a first round pick and more for Favre. Giving up a first round pick is like giving up a potential player with 10-12 good years for a player with potentially 1 or 2 good years if that. Especially considering that he would only give 1 or 2 years at best, and they then would have to go through this CRAP every year when he starts "thinking bout retirement" because the team didn't get to the playoffs or to the Super Bowl (probably because HE threw the interception to the end the game).
