Clinton suing downtown building owner

By Ann Marie Ames ( Contact )   August 11, 2008 - 7:26 a.m.

The village of Clinton has filed a lawsuit in Rock County Court that could end in the razing of a former bar on Allen Street.

The village wants the court to determine the crumbling building is a public nuisance and order property owner Alan Wiedmer to fix it. If he doesn’t, the village asks the court to authorize the village inspector to raze the building.

Wiedmer would be responsible for the cost of tearing down the building, said Mary Jensen, village president.

If the brick building at 104 and 106 Allen St. comes down, it could end years of trying to get the building fixed, Jensen said.

Wiedmer told The Janesville Gazette he was meeting with an architect today to look at preliminary plans to renovate the 100-year-old building that originally was a hotel and later a bar and grill.

The reason for the delay, Wiedmer said, is that he doesn’t know the best use of the building. The architect’s plans will determine that, he said.

“We are finishing plans to remodel the building,” Wiedmer said. “But the end use has not been determined. First, we will bring the building back into safe condition.”

The village should really worry about other things, like their sky high mill rate. The property in question has been that way for years, and now they are worried about it. Lets look at the bigger picture please! It is so time for a younger, more educated village board with a different mindset! Try and walk around the village on the sidewalks, now there is a challenge! Look at the condition of most of the streets in the town... Maybe if the Village wins they can tear down another building in the downtown and put gravel down! I bet that would look better!

WHY don't you people stick to the story and skip the rest of your comments or have a public debate some place other than here?

chemical,
just the opposite. I have a problem with the media using people's misfortunes to sell a newspaper. You want the straight poop, you just got it. Am I anti media? For the most part, yes. We have good media and we have bad media. Mostly bad. We have a society of people who believe everything they read and base their entire belief system around the bull crap they read in our corporate driven media. I, personally, have been exposed to the truth about the garbage media that's poisoning our generations minds. I'm not at all claiming to be the "end all". Believe it or not, we have generations of people who live in a world of make believe because they've been brainwashed by the constant flow of media in this country. If you deny that point, you're one of them. I pray you're not. It pains me that people are more interested in what the "Gazette" has to say rather than a history book that teaches our kids that freedom didn't come for free. This country is headed for a bad place because people have lost sight of what's real anymore. We need a proper education. It starts with history!

the building in question is between the coffee shop and Boxcars and looks like you know what? It should be fixed or torn down. Bricks have fallen off the back and it is just an eyesore!!

A website hit is a hit is a hit. It doesn't matter whether the individual likes what he sees or not. As long as opens the site it's recorded and everyone knows the value of advertising is directly related to the number of hits a website receives. Keep it up kleej, your entertainment boosts the Gazette's advertising revenue.

Kleej - it sounds like you enjoy reading stories about people dying tragic deaths, people getting arrested for prostitution and peoples misfortune and sorrow.... If you don't like the articles the Gazette publishes, maybe you should not bother reading them and pick up a different newspaper/website. It's not like the Gazette is the New York Times, but people like to read the articals and see what is happening in their city and surrounding areas. Lighten up.

funny how that building was suitable for the local bank and coffe shop to conduct business. Now the coffee shop is about to leave and the bank moved to the north side of town. Less tax dollars flowing to the village from that building so now, all of the sudden it's become expendable?? I don't buy it.

local yes, influencial just the same. Some day you'll wake up to what's happening out in the real world. If you're entertained by the media more power to you. That's what they're there to do. Entertain you into buying into their "product" which happens to be funded by companies who are also educating you to buy their "product". Go get another credit card and shop away.....everyone else does, right?

I don't read the Gazette. Why would I when I can be entertained for free in this site?
I don't have anything personal against the Gazette. However, I realize they're part of the media system that's ganged up on mainstream America. All I'm doing is excercising my right of opinion while it's still available in this country. WAKE UP AMERICA!

Thanks Gazette for this breaking story! This has to be the story of the year right here! It must be a slow week for you, right? No bar owner deaths, no biker rally, no strip club "sting" operations, no people crying in public........ too bad you couldn't have found a way to snap a picture of Mr. Wiedmer standing on top of his building in a "Superman" outfit or something.... maybe next time.
