Haven't y'all heard that working at a gas station really is one of the most dangerous jobs out there?! That is the sole reason why I do not intend to work at a gas station, for fear of the dangers! I know this will start something, but who cares!

I'd put a trap door right where the robber would have to stand. And BAM the floor gives way to a cage in the floor...filled with alligators.

tnimmo89.....The article was written by the Janesville Gazette not the Janesville Police dept. If you think the police report provides a description with out providing a race,if one was known, then you're wrong.

I guess people just can not learn to earn money instead of steal it. Too bad she did not have a pit bull or a police dog with her. Maybe he would of learned not to mess with the night shift!!

opinions- he was tan nylon!!. if it was blaack nylon who could tell then?if they had guns someone might get shot and not the bad person. the bad person could get killed too and then a whole new can of worms like family sueing the coounter person from wrongful death. MACE YES!!!
JCK the suspect has 2 "ARMS" ;>)
Why does everyone mention she ran out the BACK door? It doesnt saay that. i will read the update
also they are trained to just give people the money then call police I believe that is what I have read in the past.
Why so many questions Qaundassesion? If somebody tried to rob me WHO knows what would run threw my mind or anyone at that time in life. if she is out there Yelling that prob freaked out the guy so he ran. i am sure he didnt want to get caught just trying to steal. that is a crime too ATTEMPTED robbery.

ljs64, well said. While this was not a textbook response to a store robbery (the general idea is a timed safe so there is little cash on hand, which is handed over in order to preserve the clerk's life and safety), it was in line with recommendations for personal crime. If you can distract or disrupt what is going on many criminals will in fact just give up and leave. It does have risks, however, if the criminal is in fact armed.
.
As to race, the Gazette and JPD have not been shy in the past about identifying racial characteristics. A dark nylon mask is intended to mask features and it would be difficult to tell the difference between a dark Caucasian or Hispanic and a light African-American, or anyone of mixed race. That's the whole idea of the nylon mask!

Simply rasing the question of "what race was the suspect" is not racist. It is a descriptor, your right when you say that PC can go too far.
I don't think putting guns into every clerks hands is an answer, unless it is fully legal and they are FULLY trained and backgrounded. Otherwise it might lead to uneccessary harm anyway.
I agree why wasn't there more information in the article, maybe it was ommitted on purpose for some tactical reason?

I agree with Quad. - at that store she would have had to work her way around all sorts of displays & then go outside to yell for help. Was the clerk filling shelves or something that would take her out from behind the counter.
Why don't the all-night stores have a "panic" button that calls 911? Also, do they have servelance (sorry sp).
& yet still why would this person leave empty handed? Did the cleark reconize this person & say "hey George I know it's you so I'm going to run outside & scream while you run out the back door & go home & dont' ever try this again"
Very strange. Hey JB Strange & stupid news right here in our own town. I'll be listening.... :)

I doubt that is what took place. Think about that for a second. He is close enough to demand money, and after committing to this crime he decides to let her leave before him? Even if she snuck out, which is unbelievable, he would have full access to the register, cigs, you name it.

Was he black or white? He left empty-handed AND THEN she followed him out of the store yelling? Was she behind the counter when he demanded the money? If so, what did she say that made him leave? Why did she follow him out of the store? Did she yell for police before she called for them or after? Sooo, let me get this straight. A ____ male, 5'5", and wearing blue jeans and a maroon sweatshirt, walks in with a nylon stocking over his face, walks into the store and demands money. He then left with nothing? If she ran out after him, what did she say or do that was so overpowering that it made a man leave after he worked up the confidence to commit to following through on a felony? The options here are:
1) That she left out a back door. If that were the case, that is not only dangerous, but unbelievable. That would mean he had access to anything he wanted for a few seconds, but still decided to leave empty-handed.
2) She (the clerk) trumped his fear or weapon with _____. Did she have a gun? Still leads to why she would leave store after he left. They do not train her to do that.
3) The man, who had already committed himself to the crime decided to evoke morals and standards after the fact. Doubtful, but that still leads me to ask why she left the store?
4) She said, "sorry I have no money". His response was, "ok, another time. Bye". Again, why did she leave the store?
As you can see, none of these sound acceptable. Fill us in please. I would love to hear more details. By no means am I insinuating this did not take place. I am insinuating this is one of the strangest robberies I have heard of. It is hard to fathom a person crossing the line, and leaving empty-handed when he certainly has the upper hand.

Store clerks should be armed... Or at least have tazers or something. It would make idiots like this think twice before attempting something like this.
