Former jail officer faces felony charge stemming from relationship with inmate
ELKHORN -- A former Walworth County correctional officer accused of having a relationship with an inmate and illegally passing him a greeting card will appear in court Friday on a felony charge.
Ellen L. Madl, 49, of 616 N. Wisconsin St., Elkhorn, is charged with delivery of illegal articles to an inmate. She will appear in Walworth County Court Friday at 1 p.m.
Madl remains free on $1,000 signature bond. If convicted, she faces up to three years and six months in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Madl resigned from her job as correctional officer July 1 before the criminal charge was filed, Walworth County Sheriff David Graves said.

villajanesville: You must have been an inmate yourself if you know for a fact of what is being fed and eaten at the jail. Plus if you did research before you opened your mouth you would see that she has already seen the courtroom on this charge on Aug. 15. If Walworth County "takes care of their own" then this article would have never made it to the paper, it would have been covered up. Then you could have saved yourself the embarrassment of showing the world how ignorant you are.

villajanesville: What does it matter what the officers eat??? If the officers are eating prime rib that is because the officers PAID for the prime rib. Because whatever you eat means anything?? Do some research before you start bashing a person's profession. Whatever trucks are coming and going for food at Walworth County, Aramark is paying for. Like I said do some research and you would know that Walworth County has a food contract with Aramark. That means they must be saving the taxpayers money otherwise they wouldn't be contracting out the food service in the jail. I think we should put you on the terrorism watch list if your watching what trucks are coming and going from a Sheriff's Department.

By the way. They will be looking to make an example out of that officer in the pursuit of charges, as well as pushing for a plea bargain to get a conviction (of lesser amount probably), and I don't know if I agree or disagree with it. I believe in objective punishment, but I also greatly dislike abuse or missuse of certain positions, such as an officer.

Firecracker and BostonBill, I caught that in the article, just thought the comment was funny about the card. I could have thought of funny things to say too. The miscommunication? Naw that NEVER happens does it? Well maybe 95% of the time it doesn't!

Mytake4u and truecitizen:
Just my opinion: I think you both are basically on the same page and the posts may be, “a failure to communicate” (line from an old movie). I don’t know about the actual percentages of who brings contraband into particular places of incarceration but I do know that it does, obviously, happen. The “95%” may have been misstated, misinterpreted, just disagreed upon or misspelled, nope; mrspellel; mrspelled, Oh forget it. (spelling doesn’t matter. *w*). People are people and we all make wrong choices in our lives but I believe the majority of correctional officers are honest, dedicated people.
Having said that, a key word in the charge is, “relationship”, unless that is what the greeting card is considered.

As the article states, charges have been filed due to a relationship AND illegally passing the card. I can't imagine that the DA's office would waste their time prosecuting this case if there wasn't more to the situation.
It is very disheartening to think that someone would risk their job and reputation over something like this, let alone tarnish the reputation of the Walworth County correctional staff.

I have to stop writing these so long, now I'm mispelling words and wrong useage of them (to, too, two). By the way PWRTRIP that was funny! Though it is still wrong of the staff and there's probably more to it than just a card.

It still reads "95% of the contraband was brought in by the officers".....I'm telling you that is crazy. You must have worked in a horrible facility. Officers bring in almost no contraband at all. Unless your trying to make another point, you have me lost then.
****
News flash, I have been in all three government positions as well. And for longer then you state that you have been. I have specific insight to all of these related topics. It just made me mad when you suggested that.
***
But to stay on the topic (as the blog rules state), I feel that these very few and far between examples of 'officers' (Walworth and Rock) are the extreme exception to an otherwise very orderly and professional and under appreciated work force. It sounds like you appreciate that as well, but yesterday's first entry by you, did not sound like that.
***
By the way, you are correct when saying inmates are treated to liberally. I think society treats them as such, more than the jails, police, or even the courts. But to this day, I can't tell you how to change that, without changing our mores' and morals in society.
***
Point for the topic: I think the atmosphere in which these officers work is sooooo subjective and very difficult to keep focused on the 'objective'. I often wonder why 'managers and controllers' don't do more to protect and help keep the uniformed person(s) stable in mind and work atmosphere. It just simply doesn't have to be like it is. These officers behavior is entirely unacceptable, however, it may be partially the result of stingy budgets and minimal staffing, horrible atmosphere etc etc. What do you think? Just envision the exchanges, stress, and maylay that one deals with in these uniformed positions.

truecitizen and helly27... i DID NOT say that 95% of the officers were dirty. i said 95% of the contraband is brought in by the officers. so......how foolish you look by being critical. BOTH of you lack reading retention skills. what prison and state i worked in makes no difference to you! i had the guts to work inside those walls for 5 years. i quit because of the liberal treatment the cons get. they are treated better and have more rights than the average citizen. even the counselors have fallen in love with and been busted for bringing inmates contraband. 95% or more of the officers do a good job under the constant threat on their lives. you could never understand unless you were there. i still keep my eyes wide open when i go back to that state to visit family and friends.
i just wanted to make sure the future readers understand what that post was about.....i could not care ANY LESS what truecitizen or helly27 thinks or says about me. i served my country honorably as an officer (ocs), worked in law enforcement, paid my taxes and child support and have the love of my children and grandchildren. all i was doing was stating a FACT based on personal knowledge regarding something they know NOTHING about!!!!!

mytake4u....you need to learn how to spell, maybe thats why you are a former corrections officer. Really, 95% of the contraband is brought in by jail staff? You're absolutely incorrect.
Furthermore your comment had no direction in lieu of this report other than you speak of corrections.
As for the officer in the article, I hope she is treated according to what she has earned. Nothing more or less. As for the officer here in Rock County, he should also be treated as such. No more no less.
I have no tolerance for people of particular positions that cannot keep separation of play and work, and basically can't remain professional. So long as we are clear, I am not backing the officers in question. Merely stating that over the top, unruly, and baseless comments need to be ommitted. If you are a criminal or have a criminal mind, then live out your life as such. But call it like it is.
The truth is that "95%" or more of true professionals, not only do their jobs with honesty, but they take up the slack of the other few percent at the same time. If you hate the people in uniform a then just say it, don't lie about stuff. I happen to respect them alot for all of the work they do, while so many people give them crap at the same time. The occassional bad apple will be dealt with however.

as a former correctional officer, i can state for a cetainty that 95% of contriband brought in is by the correctional officers! ONCE DIRTY-ALWAYS DIRTY!! we also caught a civilian kitchen worker giving outside road crews pounds of cheese and cold cuts to take out in their work coolers to trade for sex and drugs. it's a world of it's own and the inmates run the show!!!!

so what do you think was untruthful or a lie? What about the statement did you think was slander or libel?

All4justice: I see now that your comment has been removed. Anyway, I think it was more in danger of being considered an act of "libel" than "slander". Here is the legal definition of libel: An untruthful statement about a person, published in writing or through broadcast media, that injures the person's reputation or standing in the community. Because libel is a tort (a civil wrong), the injured person can bring a lawsuit against the person who made the false statement. Libel is a form of defamation, as is slander (an untruthful statement that is spoken, but not published in writing or broadcast through the media). Got to be careful.
