UPDATE: Interstate reopens after accident delays Craig High football game
MIDDLETON -- The Craig High School football game kicked off an hour late at Middleton tonight after the team's bus was involved in a five-vehicle crash along Interstate 90, closing the interstate's northbound lanes until about 9 p.m. tonight, officials said.
No one was injured, according to Wisconsin State Patrol officials. The crash occurred at 5:05 p.m.
The game, which was delayed, had been scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
The northbound lanes along Interstate 90 were closed near Newville for four hours while the crash was under investigation, officials said. Northbound interstate traffic was diverted at Highway 26 in Janesville.
Craig High is playing Middleton High School in a Big Eight Conference football game.

Kevin has now been discharged from hospital in Madison. His injuries were determined to be such that he could travel home to Calgary to recuperate there.

Actually, there were some non-life threatening injuries, though apparently not on the School bus. See this article at http://www.nbc15.com/home/headlines/2982...
The driver of the first truck was transported to the University of Wisconsin hospital. His name is Kevin Hansen, 28 years old, from Canada, and an experienced driver. He's my nephew. He's in a great deal of discomfort and awaiting the results of further tests.
Please keep him in your prayers. Thanks.

Most of these incidents are caused by ignorant and selfish people that believe that as long as they are on the "interstate", they will not have to slow down for anything at any time because its an "interstate"..... This, along with their seeming inability to read speed limit signs and the total lack of law enforcement activity.

The incident in the other (left)lane was where it all started. I was in the right lane. I can't say for sure who started what. All I know is I saw brake lights, a black car swerving in the left lane with another car and the bus behind it. Everybody got on the their brakes Although I was a safe distance behind the truck when it started, I couldn't get stopped in time. The truck I struck was empty of cargo and I had a full load on. I wasn't traveling all that fast when I hit him, but all the weight on my truck pushed forward at impact. Thank goodness I always wear my seat belts.

I don't get it. I stuck my head out the window to ask an officer how far the interstate was backed up (at 6pm). In a very extremely rude manner, he told me he didn't know (liar, he would know exactly where the accident is at) and that I better be getting on my way. It would have taken less breath to tell me that it was shut down up to Newville. This is not the first time this has happened with a Janesville officer. What's the deal with that?

pfd42~Thank you for making the decision you did. Your right if you would have tried to change lanes or something the kids on the bus and everyone in between could have been seriously injured. I have been around semis my entire life, my dad being a truck driver, and I know first hand those things don't stop easy or nearly fast enough. There need to be more drivers on the road like you. If this would have been a new driver you never know what decision he/she would have made!

My son called me at 5:30 from Janesville to see what the traffic back up was--I looked on the Wis. Dept of Transportation and it was already on there. I'm glad no one was seriously injured but the main opinion on this page was the headline. I agree it should have been rephrased. To the semi driver thanks for your viewpoint and what you did to prevent a very deadly accident.

I was the driver of the semi-tractor. The entire incident started in front of me in the other lane. The only option I had was to remain in my lane and try to get slowed down. However, 47,000 lbs. of cargo doesn't stop on dime, especially going down a hill. I chose the path of what I felt was the safest for all traffic and struck the truck in front of me as straight and direct as I could instead of risking a lane change. There was nowhere else to go. As an EMT and Firefighter of 21 years, no one is more thankful than I that this incident wasn't worse. I hope the driver of the truck I hit is doing well and I apologize again to him. I simply had no other choice but to hit him or possibly risk a lot of other lives. We got caught up in some else's mistake.

it seems the serious part of the accident was the trailer and other truck. I heard it on my way home from work. The way they made it sound with the bus part was they just couldnt stop in time and only hit the front of the bus into the back of another car that was stopped. They said only minor front end damage to the bus. So i am guessing the impact to the kids in the bus was minimal and could play the game. they did alos mention on the news that ALL the parents of the kids were going to be contacted. Which maybe sone if them were already on the way to the game. Semms they didnt contact according to this blog though. they did block off the on ramps on hwy 26- i sure because it was already backed up enough.

While I was out "getting a life" it looks like I took a couple of punches from a few career posters whose main source of communicating with the outside world is the Janesville Wisconsin's newspaper blog. Pretty ironic I think. As a parent of 3 children, I felt that the initial "headline/title" was a little reckless considering the lack of information. If I thought that one of my kids was on this bus I would of been panicked. Furthermore as a US citizen I am granted the right of free speech through the First Amendment, however that does not mean I have the right to say anything at anytime without taking responsibility for the outcome. The Gazette, myself and those that chose to degrade me all used the right to free speech. I was simply stating that the Gazette should of gotten more information about the crash before publishing it. A simple initial "headline/title" of "Craig players heading to Middleton involved in incident on interstate" to me would of been a little more sympathetic to any parent of the players. I am very happy that no player was injured.

I responded to your first post because it was frantic and blaming the Gazette for breaking news that they had little info on, but tried to get out to the public.
Breaking news is that way. More information and details follow later.
The Gazette has now changed the headline, you've settled down and wrote a very good post, and I am sorry for giving you a hard time.

Yes, it was a serious accident but the serious accident did not involve school buses carrying Craig high school football players. The accident involved two fairly large trucks. The Fender bender between a few vehicles including the school buses was a result of the accident, and it was barely a fender bender in the buses case. My point is the headline made it seem as if the serious accident was the buses and not the trucks. For someone reading that headline not knowing what’s going on its upsetting because I have friends on that bus, then to read that the real accident did not involve my classmates was farther upsetting and misleading. I’m glad that the gazette changed the wording of the title. I’m also disappointed in the media for making a bigger deal of the football teams involvement, when the actual accident, which looked pretty bad, was between two trucks. I guess a team from the Big 8 getting in a minor fender bender is more important then two trucks crashing into each other causing a major traffic jam and extensive damage to each truck. I’m glad they reported the accident so all would know especially the parents of the students, but there was no need to make it sound like the accident was the school buses when in fact it was two very large trucks. That was my whole point I don’t know why that’s so wrong of me to want, seriously!

"The crash occurred at 5:05 p.m". Ted Sullivan reported it at 5:47, 42 minutes after it happened. That's the way to report breaking news. (compliment)
But, it took "officials" four hours to investigate the "fender bender" and re-open I-39/90.
What took them so long? (sarcasm)

The sophomore in question was my son and a Craig Football Player. As a parent I was overwhelmed to see that headline. The Ambulances were responding to a terrible crash but the busses were at least 6 cars behind the semi trailors that were actualy the cause of the crash. I know this because my husband saw the accident on his way home from Madison. There are parents out there that didn't have that information and my Daughter wanted her friends parents to know the truth. Shame on you for trying to make her feel foolish for posting it.

Mark707 just because there was an ambulance doesnt make it serious. The coaches who were talking the the sophmore (my brother)coaches said that it was a minor fender bender due to the extensive amount of traffic. So once again there was no need to make the article TITLE sound serious. They had known it was NOT serious and that no one was hurt. I guess I would't expect you to understand why its upsetting!

MDCCLXXVI- I know the traffic over there is bad!! I was over there about an hour ago but it sounds like its gotten worse. Hopefully they get that all cleared up before someone else gets in an accident!

The police are doing a great job with traffic, on the intersections they're at. Unfortunately, there is no officer at the intersection in front of the TA. My wife and I almost died there leaving the gas station. We had the green light, waited quite a while for traffic to clear out of the intersection, but just as we started to go a white minivan came through the red (coming from the direction of the interstate) going at least 45, horn blaring. One second difference we'd be dead. As it was an SUV that was turning opposite us who also had the green almost flipped trying to avoid getting t-boned as well. (just to be clear the minivan blew a light that had been red for at least 30 seconds or longer- they were coming down the road between the lanes of cars). Even police when chasing a vehicle with lights on don't go through an intersection that fast, especially given that they couldn't see at all due to traffic. That is already a bad intersection, when things get like they are now it's extremely dangerous. If you have a death wish, go jump off a cliff. Leave me out of it.

NBC15 reports "Multiple ambulances reportedly responded to the crash, but the state patrol says there are no serious injuries."

Mark707 for your information it wasn’t serious it was a fender bender I know this because my brother plays for the sophomore football team and he is in Middleton right now waiting for the varsity game to start. Therefore it was not serious so there was no need to make it sound like it was serious. Obviously you can’t understand what it felt like to think my brother could have been in serious accident or some of my friends. I’m glad the gazette posted this but the way they titled it was frightening.

I'm glad all are ok.What I don't understand is WHY are they going to play tonight ?? It doesn't say how fast any of the vehicles were going, but after being in a accident they don't need to be playing football.A doctor will tell you even after being in any accident to take it easy for a couple of days !I hope someone from the school district calls off this game tonight !!! Is one game that important ? I'm sure Middleton High School would understand and have a make-up game.

The Wisconsin State Patrol confirmed that there was a crash involving a school bus, tractor-trailer and three other vehicles on Interstate 39/90 near Janesville.
There have been no injuries reported in the crash, according to the state patrol.
The school bus was transporting the Janesville Craig High School football team to its game against Middleton.
The bus is currently on the exit 163 ramp being inspected and the team is waiting to board another bus to go to its game, which has been delayed.

I don't think it's the media's responsibility to wait out something like this. When news happens, it gets reported. That's just how it's supposed to go, isn't it? Besides, knowing the people who post on this site (2 people in particular on this story alone), they'd be mad if the Gazette didn't post something right away. You can't have it both ways. Be a little bit more objective.
