Candy recalled: White Rabbit may be toxic
Wisconsin consumers are being warned to throw out White Rabbit candy, a Chinese product that may contain the dangerous chemical melamine and that has been found in three cities in the state.
The imported product has been found in Eau Claire, Sheboygan and Wausau, as well as in a Wisconsin grocery distribution center, according to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
It has been found in grocery stores as well as Asian specialty markets, and may have been sold in stores in other locations prior to the recall, so consumers may have it in their homes, the department said.
To date, no illnesses associated with the candy have been reported in Wisconsin or elsewhere in the United States, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
White Rabbit comes in a variety of flavors. The creamy candy is sold in 8- and 16-ounce bags. Red bean, coffee, corn, lychee, mango, strawberry and assortments are sold in 7-ounce bags. All have a white rabbit design on the front.
The department said the candy can be thrown out or returned to the store for a refund. Questions about the product can be directed to QFCO Inc., the Burlingame, Calif., company that imported and distributed the candy, at (650) 697-6633.
QFCO recalled the candy on Sept. 26, although Wisconsin was not on the original recall list. For more information about the melamine contamination situation, go to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Web site. —————

Food from other countries isn't any cheaper to grow than in the US, it's just that you don't see some of the costs. These are called "externalized costs". They're the costs a producer doesn't pay when operating in another country. Some externalized costs are lack of environmental protection, and cheap labor. Of course, the labor is cheap because they sleep on dirt floors, don't own cars, and have never seen a doctor in their life. We need to raise (and lower) everybody to the same level so we're all playing the same game.

Isn't it nice, too, how fuel is so plentiful and cheap as to ship FOOD from these other countries?

I was at the nations leading "big-box" store about two years ago, and was in the canned vegetable aisle hoping they had "rolled back the prices" on peas and green beans.
.
Sure enough, I found a "best buy" on the store brand versions of each, and threw them in the cart.
.
Got home and snickered to myself at what a smart shopper I was when putting the goods away in the kitchen cupboards.
.
There the food sat for a month or two, and then the Chinese-made consumer goods alerts started. So I went to the kitchen cupboards to examine some labels, and low and behold.. My peas and my green beans, while not grown in China, all sported labels indicating that they were packaged in Vietnam and/or Cambodia.
.
I can understand where we might need to import produce like pineapples and coconuts and such. But peas? And green beans? Tell me we can't supply this country ten-fold with vegatables from within our own borders.
.
Also, I discovered within our pantry a twelve ounce can of Hormel Roast Beef, parbroiled and steam roasted with gravy. It is a product of Argentina. That fact was at least made conspicuously clear on both the label and the top of the can, but again..... Why should we have to import Argentinian beef for packaged goods, and Brazilian "meat" for fast-food type hamburgers?
.
To grow, manufacture, and export the same vegetables and other food products as we import from other countries is seen by this poster as an example of needless spending and a definition of the word "redundant" in its purest form.

Not to belabor the point but Chinese food products have no safety standards....they have poisoned our pets, gave us toxic toys for our kids, poisoned our medications, and now our food. Screw this global economy...let us make our own food and toys and cars. At least we will have some control over the ingredients and I doubt we will make our baby formula with melemine or antifreeze in our toothpaste. My grandpa preached for years to buy American and as a younger man I did not listen, man I wish he were here now.
