McCain backers in Wis. say they don't trust polls
WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) Supporters waiting in line to see John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin in Waukesha say they don't believe recent polls that show Democrat Barack Obama leading by 10 points in Wisconsin.
Alicia Thorson of Waukesha says she thinks the polls are fixed. The mother of four says she doesn't trust what she called the "liberal media."
Thorson's 3-year-old and 7-year-old daughters were dressed like Palin outside the sports complex where McCain was to hold a noon town hall meeting.
Kristi Czaplewski says she doesn't believe the polls because "you can't believe anything you see on TV."
And 73-year-old Dave Zalar of Jefferson says he believes the press is biased against McCain so he doesn't believe the polls either.

truecitizen, what are you on? There's a big difference between being biased and reporting the truth. Maybe it's just not always the way you prefer to see it. And many reporters of major media conglomerates are subject to discipline and even firings if they do not report stories the way that is to the conservative owners liking, such as Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO of News Corporation and David Smith who is Chairman and CEO of Sinclair Broadcast Group. So it does matter who owns the news media.

Many of you are debating Obama vs. McCain (and like the media, ignoring all the other candidates). This article is about people not trusting polls. I agree with them - I don't trust polls either. Why? Because polls are often designed to create the desired outcome. For example, a recent presidential poll surveyed a higher percentage of Democrats than are found in the general population. Guess who "won" that poll - Obama! What a surprise! In addition to election polls, I also no longer believe government data, such as the unemployment rate, inflation rate, etc. I have no doubt that these are routinely manipulated for political expediency. Pay close attention to what's happening in your own life, and take information from the "powers that be" with a HUGE grain of salt.

Talk shows.
The liberal side has only one topic, one side, and everyone else is wrong. They talk only of failed policy and hate Bush. Their programming is sarcastic and inuendo. They donot want to hear anything that conflicts with their preconcieved beliefs or actually refute anything they'v said (EXAMPLE: The truth).
The conservative side is relaxed, listens to both sides and lets the listner make up his/her own mind. Believes both sides have a right to speak out and will only question when either side is not telling the truth. Truth is the important word here.
Regardless, if you don't listen to both sides with an open mind, then how does one make an informed decision?
Your vote is the one that will help determine the road this country will take----lets be sure it is the right road. Look,Listen, Decide and vote on who you honestly believe will live up to what he says.

If John McCain had good judgment, why would he pick a running mate under investigation? I think that shows very poor judgment. There was any number of other people he could have chosen who were as if not more qualified that were not under investigation. I agree, the only poll that counts is the one on November 4th.

igotclout..You're forgetting about coverage. Yes Foxnews is the most viewed, But the other major prgrams are more seen in total (collectively). I believe more people are subjected to the other views. The differences are in the 'mean' vs. the 'median'...I think I said that right. More outlets vs. what's actually viewed or listened to. Without FOX, there would be an almost completely one sided view. Do you agree at all?

Dear redhawk.....what side of the solar system did you wake up on? The media regardless of apparent ownership or not is by far liberally bias.
To you who debate McCain's service....Obama never served! Further more....McCain is not Bush and neither of the current candidates have much to do with the economy anyway (yet)! People are just behaving like bandwagon lemmings!. I try to think for myself. Obama will try to solve everything with blanket financial approaches....covered by your taxes. This is the way of democrats, and is not even contested by them. I feel the hard working, bill paying, real true Americans, are going to pay for all of the slugs out there! Doesn't matter anyway. Obama's foreign policy will be filled with appeasement. That worked soooo well for Clinton. North Korea listened so well didn't they? Clinton gave them Billions in food, aid, and other incentives, to not pursue their nukes. They did it, and appeasement failed....now what say Obama on Iran?
*
Obama is also very one sided. McCain will be much more approachable by other members of government. Simply put Obama is farther from center than McCain. I don't want a radical in office. Obama's history will show it's ugly self long after its too late!
*
Obama sounds good in the wake of events which are not tied to McCain anyway. If it sounds good it usually is not. Haven't you learned anything from the history of advertisements? Trust John McCain and you will be glad you did so.

Whiny, cry-baby conservatives love to prattle on and on about the "liberal media." To be fair, except for FOX News (Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, John Gibson, Neil Cavuto, Steve Doocy, E.D. Not cell phone users, internet users? Just people who are at home when the poll is taken by land phone or door-to-door.

If/When Sen.Obama wins the requisite electoral votes to be the next President of the United States of America...Sen John McCain will not be the big loser, no, the big loser will be the citizens of the USA for showing so little insight to elect the feel good/fix it for us/save us candidate.
I see the numbers reflecting the insight and political savvy of roughly 40some percent of the nations population...50some percent are easily led fools who would vote for anyone promising to save them and let them be taken care of at Govt. expense.
Read the history books you rabid Obama supporters...pay close attention to the elections of 1932 in Germany...think it cant happen here or again? The well meaning but politically retarded will elect Obama president.

What I'd watch for as far as discrepencies in the polls is something called the "Bradley Effect". Named for Tom Bradley, a black candidate for Governor in the 1982 election in California. Bradley was projected to win the race, and not by a small margin. It turns out that people being polled, on some level, are looking for the social acceptance of the person doing the polling. Rather than risk that the person polling them thinking that they were possibly a racist, the people being polled said that they were voting for Bradley, even though they had no intention of doing so. Bradley lost the election. Many people being polled may just answer that they are voting for Obama. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it does happen.

"I want to reward McCain for his service to his country by letting him reward us!".. REWARD him for what?? For serving in the service? Not everyone who serves in the service is fit to lead and either is mccain. Should we reward him for the mess this country is in? Should we reward him for voting with bush 90% of the time and voting not to regulate banking or the cronies on wall street?? He needs to retire. Also on his comment the other night during the debate, calling Obama 'that one ' I don't think it was racist as some are saying. I simply think he could not remember who it was he was debating. His age sneaking up on him. He is rude, angry and has a agenda. He is disprespectful to fellow senators not just Obama and his temper shows more and more.

McCain has no personal agenda to be gained. I believe he is sincere and will follow-through on his promises. He is at an age where he is ready to give back to us. I have listened to both candidates. Obama is spuing empty statistics and is less likely to make the practical applications later on. I am not a republican (though conservative), and I have been open minded. McCain is by far the choice for this nation. I believe his actions will speak louder than any words. I want to reward McCain for his service to his country by letting him reward us!

Many polls are taken by telephone...land line telephones...and not cell phones. Many people, especially younger voters, do not have a land line. This distorts the results in favor of voters (often older) with traditional phone service.
A second method of polling voters is door-to-door canvassing. This is often done during the working day or early evening and distorts the results in favor of retired or stay-at-home voters.
Beware the results of polls.

It's tough being a conservative these days. I can't understand why everyone is against us. Just because the "trickle down" economy didn't exactly work out. I mean we work so hard to help this country by trying to eliminate individual freedoms while attempting to arm every American with automatic weapons. It was so much easier before that darn liberal media got involved. Now the polls are fixed and you can't believe anything on TV anymore unless you're watching FOX news. That Bill O'Reilly is such an honest man, alway trying to bring people together. But like he says, those liberal spies are everywhere. In fact, just the other day I had to where a disguise over my tin foil hat. Even if he loses Wisconsin, he's up so much in the electoral count (320 for Obama, 163 for McCain, and 55 undecided or too close to call according to pollster.com), that I doubt it will make a difference. Obama would really have to screw up now (I mean like Howard Dean style) to lose.

Yes this survey is most likely to be off. There's always a margin of error based on the size of the sample group. That's why there isn't just one but several polls in Wisconsin that show Obama up.
My question is why does the Janesville Gazette, year after year, report items that feed into the conservative paranoia about media, scientific polling, and progressives? The Gazette never fails to turn something good about Democrats into an even better story that stokes the Republican base.

Polls are just an idea of the current view of the people at that certain time. Of course they can be changed. While I believe that Obama is leading right now, I don't believe that it is at 10 points. I believe that it is closer to 5-6 points.
.
Another reason to not believe the polls is that a lot of the polls had Bush up 3-8 points in Wisconsin going into the last weekend and he lost Wisconsin.
