Janesville woman charged after child's death
JANESVILLE — A Janesville woman is charged in connection with the death of her boyfriend's 14-month-old son.
26-year-old April S. Peabody is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on January 29th on charges of Child Neglect Resulting in Death and Obstructing an Officer. According to the criminal complaint, 14-month-old Israel Gordon was seriously injured while taking a bath earlier in the day. Peabody told police she and her boyfriend took Gordon to Walmart later in the day December 8th and did not realize the severity of Gordon's injuries. Peabody later told police her boyfriend took his son to Beloit to buy heroin after the bathtub accident.
If convicted on the child neglect charge, Peabody could face 25 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

hiredgun: thank you for your comments it is nice to know there are good people out there. you sound quite passionate about this, are you a social worker as well?

hiredgun: touche! point well taken. However, having have dealt with CPS, I have nothing bad to say about the workers themselves. It is the outcome and the "system" in general. Because they are so overworked and shamefully underpaid, cases get pushed through as quick as possible so they can move on to the next one. Sorry to have offended any social workers out there!

After reading some of the comments it doesn't surprise me why society is the way it is. The adults don't need mental health help, they need prison. As for CPS, they can only do so much, maybe the community should get more involved instead of sitting back and passing judgement.

evansvillehousewife- most criminals are foster children? where do you get some of this stuff you post? that is ludicrous. the rest of your post is very good, but that comment is just ridiculous.

Its awfully easy to hide behind the anonymity of a message board and shoot off one's mouth in ignorance of the subject as evansvillehousewife and momof5 have done.
But what, pray tell, is their solution? To shut down CPS and stiffen penalties! Obviously they know little and understand less about CPS and its role in the child welfare system.
CPS is the lead social services agency with regard to child abuse. But CPS does not impose penalties, only courts can do that. CPS can only make emergency removals (Which it does), make referrals to law enforcement officials, and make recommendations to courts. (Which it also does).
Evanvsville and momo's ire would be better directed against police, prosecutors, and judges instead of CPS workers who have the thankless task of being on the frontline of these cases.

jvllemom; I just read all the posts on here with yours last and I just had to applaud you. That is the whole problem, we're quick to judge and far to quick to find someplace else to point the finger. It's so much easier to criticize, to blame, and to say to one self I'm not part of the problem. The truth is that this is part of our society today, and if as citizens we're not part of the solution, then we are part of the problem. My God, what personal pain must exist within these 2 that such a fowl thing could happen to their child. Now if you can get past this of what can I do to make a difference? You're doing your part how can I help?

I am not sure why this article always reverts back to CPS and social workers. CPS can only do what the jurisdiction/laws allows them to do. If you have a problem with that, maybe you should become more involved in the legislation than posting comments on the gazette bashing people. I am a social worker myself and resent the comments immensely.

evansvillehousewife: as many readers can figure out for themselves, "we" (meaning you and I) have not seen eye to eye on many topics. However, I second everything you just posted. CPS isn't worth a dime of their tax dollars. And, no, I am NOT bashing social workers. The ones I have dealt with have been "pleasurable" to deal with. However, because they are so overworked and underpaid, many abusers get a slap on the wrist and CPS never looks back as they are now focused on the next hamster wheel they have to jump on. It is a sad day in this society when a biological parent can leave physical bruises, 6, 7, 8, 9 inches wide and long and immeasurable psychological bruises but yet get off with a minimal fine and some probation. I've seen people get a worse punishment for retail theft! Again, well said evansvillehousewife!

Taysgranny-
For the most part, children are legally treated as subhuman. If you think about all the children that are in foster care- all those children were severly abused or neglected. However, the perpetrators rarely are charged with child abuse. I don't think CPS should exist- I think people should be charged with child abuse as a crime.
Right now, if a child is abused the police call CPS and Cps gets to torment the child for years. The abusers get off scott free.
We wonder why we have usch violent crime and full prisons- mnost criminals are foster children that had no childhood and the abusers have no accountability.

I'm glad charges, whatever they may be, have been brought against her as well as the boyfriend. In my opinion she is equally responsible for the child's death.

My opinion, I wish sterilization were an option for the court to order as part of a very long sentence! Neither should be allowed to have children nor be around any, period. This poor baby didn't have a choice did he! To be charged with "child neglect", what a slap on the wrist. Why not negligent homicide? A child is dead, why do they get away with this? Why are we reading so many articles about deaths of children, like they are disposable human beings? Make the penalties tough, I mean real tough, like a life sentence. These people are truly getting away with murder and it makes me sick!
