Is Beloit really more crime-ridden than Janesville?

— Beloit has a reputation as the Rock County municipality with the most crime. Beloit Police Captain Bill Tyler says it's like comparing Madison and Milwaukee: both cities have their share of crime. Tyler says as a general rule, Beloit's neighborhoods and businesses are just like every other community and safe to be in.

Janesville Deputy Police Chief Dave Moore says his city has some gang activity, but it's not well organized and there isn't much gang-related violence in Janesville. He says very few violent crimes in Janesville are stranger-on-stranger crimes.

You are all so wrong when it comes to Janesvilee and its drug problems. I just graduated from one of our high school, when i came home for thankgiving i heard some thing about all your kids. The local oxycotin supplier has moved and so guess what now all your "perfect" little children have turned to heroin. Congratulations on being so concerned about others that you havent notice the addicts in your own home. dont make assumptions about beloit because janesville has a problem with the same "hard core" drugs they do.

Where are the drug statistics? Aren't most people in jail for drug offenses? Isn't crack use really the core problem behind most thefts, robberies, and burglaries? The reporter really fell short by not addressing the huge problem of drug-related crimes. Oh, and you really should separate out marijuana arrests versus "real" drug arrests for things that actually wreck lives and damage society like crack, meth, and alcohol abuse. I'll suspect you'll find that police in Janesville are busy arresting high school kids for pot while Beloit cops are totally overwhelmed with crack-related crime.

Statistics don't tell us much...I think that the crime rate is very much the same in Janesville and Beloit. I feel that the real problem is how crimes are handled. I agree with Mymaro on this one...having had to deal with Beloit and Janesville police I feel that The beloit PD take their job very seriuosly. The Beloit PD follow through with investigation...where Janesville PD seem to be very ignorant. Janesville PD have a tendancy to blow most crimes off as being minor and not much further investigation is ever persued. "Minor crime is an open door for Major crime" both must be handled seriously.

paisleysdaddy, your comment seems right on. i live in janesville but used to live in beloit. the police in beloit seem to be doing alot more to improve their community than those here in janesville. janesville police dont seem to want to get out of their car, maybe theyre all afraid of their shadows. a neighbor here in janesville had all the windows broke out in his truck this summer and when the police showed up, about 2 hours after the call, they looked at it and asked "do you have any idea who did this?" that was the extent of their "investigation". apparently dunkin donuts had a sale going on

Just two comments; please note "arrest records" in the comparison. The fact that Beloit has obviously more arrests per capital (in comparison to population) may be a good thing. It indicates the police are charging people and getting them in the courts rather than just giving warnings that do not appear in statistics. It is common knowledge that if Beloit PD goes out on a call, they will charge someone. Maybe for true comparison, it would be good to look at "calls" vs arrest records. And again, violent crimes are the ones that really concern residents.
And the other comment is that a lot of the crime here comes from persons outside of Beloit; like Rockford. So also comparing where the perpetrators are from also weighs on the numbers. Our Rockford connection can be very detrimental. They think if they come to a small town, there is less chance of getting caught; drugs, crime, thefts, etc.

I believe an objective measure of crime is to compare rate of crime based on percentage of population. Considering the significant differences in population, it appears that-based on population there is more crime in Beloit. How the rate of crime in Beloit of Janesville compares to rates nationally is probably a better way to measure crime. Not knowing the national statistics, I would guess that both cities rank very low on crime, overall.

Janesville is like 61,000 and Beloit is around 35,000. So really it would only make sense that Janesville has a higher crime rate. The numbers are pretty close though for us having nearly twice as many people as Beloit.
