— Brad Bohlman figured he’d have to bring his “A” game Sunday to win the Janesville Men’s City Golf Championship.

Turns out Bohlman brought his A-plus game instead.

Bohlman blistered Riverside Golf Course with a 6-under-par 66 to finish at 2 under with a 213 total for the 54-hole event.

The city title is Bohlman’s third overall and first since 2001. Matt Behm shot an impressive 68 in the final round but finished two shots behind Bohlman’s birdie machine.

Bohlman shot a 4-under 32 on the front nine and finished his round with eight birdies. He two-putted from 40 feet for par on No. 18 to wrap up the title.

“I got on a hot streak off of (Nos.) 1 and 2, and I thought then, ‘this might be a pretty good day,’ ” Bohlman said.

“The key to playing out here is the par 5s. You can reach them all in two and you have to make birdies on them.”

Bohlman was 3 under on the par 5s, and a three-putt for par at the par-5 14th cost him a fourth birdie.

With Bohlman, Behm and Ryan Coffey playing in the last group, Bohlman birdied the first two holes to take a 2-shot lead over Behm and a 5-shot lead over Coffey. Bohlman added birdies at four and six to move to 4 under after four holes.

“My driver was nowhere to be found the first two rounds,” Bohlman said. “I went to the driving range with Braddy (brother) right before my round today to try and make some corrections.

“I got through the ball better today (driving), and the driver came back.”

Behm made a late rush at his third city title but saw putts lip out for birdie and eagle on 15 and 17. He narrowly missed a hole-in-one on 15 but could not make the birdie putt, and at the par-4 17th, Behm drove the green but lipped out his eagle attempt.

Despite coming up two shots short, Behm was happy with the way he played.

“I really thought 68 would be enough to win this, but Brad got off to a hot start and kept it going,” Behm said.

“Today is a day that you just have to tip your hat to Brad because he got on a roll and didn’t make too many mistakes that gave me an opening.

“And missing that short birdie putt at 15 really hurt because that would’ve tied me with Brad and given me a lot of momentum for the last three holes.”

Bohlman made a 45-footer for birdie on No. 16 to push his lead back to two. Behm and Bohlman both made birdie at 17, and after Behm left his approach shot short on 18, Bohlman only needed to three-put to win the tournament.

“It was a fun three days,” Bohlman said. “I don’t think you ever go into a tournament expecting to win, but it’s always nice when you do.”

Mike Reid fired a final-round 78 to win the A Flight, while David Bitter captured the B Flight.

Steven Hiser and Dennis Raabe won C Flight and D Flight, respectively.

As it turned out, seven former champions played in the this year’s Men’s City Tournament. Steve Babcock, who won in 1976 and 1981, joined former champions Jeff Bruegger, Behm, Bohlman, Coffey, Brent Kern and Sam Van Galder in the field of 140.

Bailey records hole-in-one

Joel Bailey didn’t win the Men’s City Golf Championship, but he gained the distiction of nailing a hole-in-one during the tournament.

Bailey notched his ace using a 6-iron at the 185-yard second hole at Glen Erin on Saturday. Greg Galvan witnessed the shot.

Bailey finished in a four-way tie for eight place at 252 in the B Flight.
