Delavan Pick 'n Save closing doors on Nov. 2
LAKE GENEVA The Delavan Pick ’n Save will close, and the Lake Geneva Pick ’n Save will change names in November.
On Nov. 2, the Lake Geneva store will become a Piggly Wiggly, according to a news release from storeowners Mark and Brett Stinebrink.
At the same time, the Delavan Stinebrink’s Pick ’n Save will close, and the Stinebrinks will take over operation of the Delavan Piggly Wiggly, according to the release.
The Stinebrinks’ new Piggly Wiggly stores will offer the same amenities that all Wisconsin Piggly Wiggly stores offer, including an in-store bakery, a full deli, a fresh meat department and a liquor store.
The Stinebrink family has operated supermarkets in Lake Geneva for more than 30 years and in Delavan for 20 years.
They support numerous local organizations and events, the news release stated.

I wish both stores would stay open. I am worried about many of the long term employee's that have worked at both stores for such a long time. They have become people we all know by name and their families. Many of us predicted that Wal-Mart would eventually take a toll on the community. It took a lot longer than I thought it would personally. As for the cost of items, Wal-Mart is not always cheaper. Their service is absolutely horrible at Wal-Mart! Try to find an employee that actually cares, without an attitude problem at Wal-Mart. I choose not to give my money to them. Too bad for Delavan Losing another choice in grocery stores. Good Luck to all the Employees of both stores! I hope they are able to keep the current management of Piggly Wiggly and Pick N' Save. They are all great people. Oh, as for the Steinbrinks. They give back to both Delavan and Lake Geneva on Large Scales. I remember a few years ago they donated 20k to both Lake Geneva and Delavan Police Departments. I also remember that Wal-Mart gives 500 dollars here and there... quite the difference...!!!

Take a pad of paper along next time your planning a trip to Walmart and walk down the toy aisles. Look on the packages and compose a list of just five items made in America. Do the same in the clothing section and post your results here.
.
On second thought, leave the notepad at home. Chances are you'll be able to remember the two or three American made products you discover.
.
My views have nothing to do with being some hardcore, "Made in America only" radical. If someone else can do it better, more power to them. They would deserve some attention. But in my humble opinion, half the garbage they peddle at the top three "big box" stores is, well, junk.
.
Why do most new products have to be made of plastic, or spun from synthetic fabric? Plastic and nylon are petroleum based materials. No wonder fuel prices are unmanageable. It's as much about buying little Cindy a new Barbie doll as it is about filling up the gas tank for the drive to Grandma's house to eat turkey on Thanksgiving.

With all the comments on here about products made in China,we may not have to worry about it this year.I buy wholesale and 3 of my vendors have been waiting for their orders that should of been in by July. They are all telling me the same thing, the earthquake, bad weather and China stopped all manufacturing for the Olympics.I have noticed shelves that don't seem to be over flowing this year with Thanksgiving and Halloween items .I sure hope Santa gets all of his orders this year.lol

I have shopped at both the Piggly Wiggly and the Pick n Save for years. I have found a better selection at the Pick n Save. I hope this doesn't change when it becomes a Piggly Wiggly. I find the quality of the workers and the service at the Piggly Wiggly to be much better. Too many young workers at the Pick n Save are just goofing around and ignoring customers. Same kind of poor service you get at Wal-Mart. I sure hope they keep the best people from both and get rid of the goof-offs. Also, the Pig changed management a few years ago and it was a BIG improvement in the store, especially in the produce. I hope they keep the Pig's management.

I plan my trips to the Woodman's area around my grocery shopping needs. All other stops first, then Woodman's last. They do have very good prices for the aisle foods and such. Yes, their produce is a good price too, if you can eat a 4-6 bananas, 16 oz. of Strawberries, 1 lb. of grapes, listless green leaf lettuce, 4 apples, a bag of carrots, 3 tomatoes, etc. in 3-4 days. If you can't, you'll be throwing some of it in the garbage as it has very little shelf life once it arrives home. Their meat is middle of the road for quality and price is not too bad.
I have watched Jvlle P&S really climb the price ladder in the last 2-3 years. I agree with other posters that it might not be able to remain open. It is NOT as busy as it used to be when I used to shop there regularly.
Pick-N-Save variety of brands has gone down and prices are 25-30%+ more than some of the same products at Woodman's. I watch the flyers and buy most of my produce and some of my meats (good/great quality for both) at P&S. Can't afford to buy the other things anymore. Feel sorry for the employees if they would close in the future. I know many women who shop more than one grocery store to take advantage of the best deals. I am grateful that we have a deep freeze. When meat is on sale (sirloins $3.99 this week at P&S) I buy multiples packages and freeze. Really saves the $$$$$$!

I am an old PNS worker, who worked there for many years. Mark is a great man and actually had to make the change due to Roundys. As you notice there are now NO independent PNS stores. Mark owned the last 2 and for the past years, roundys had made their grocery life horrible. Roundys wants to become another corporate company and they got their wish. Please support the Stinebrinks in their move. They are a wonderful family who cares about their workers and supports our community. Mark always pushed me to do better things and actually cared about how I was doing in school.
Walmart continues to try to push out local businesses. Just look at the top 10 richest people in our country and you will find the Waltons on the top of the list. Then go see how much of that they actually donate. I believe it is less that 1%, but I cannot remember the actual fact.
Piggly Wiggly actually has comparable prices. The Delavan PNS would compare the prices of the Pig and actually have to LOWER their prices to meet the prices of the Pig, and I do know this because I worked at the PNS store. Again, I wish the Stinebrink family the best.

With the economy the way it is, I shop to save as much as I can. I never buy meat at Walmart because they never put it on sale. I buy most of my groceries there because I can save $20-$30 per grocery trip compared to other stores. As far as everything being made in China, Walmart carries most of the same items that Shopko does, and it is cheaper. Are you all saying that Walmart stocks Tide laundry detergent that is made in China but other stores don't? If you are really concerned about buying American that's your right, but don't generalize that all Walmart's products are made in China when they are not.

Walmart = Embassy of the People's Republic of China.
.
And did you also hear that one of AIG's (that big multi-million dollar insurance conglomerate) bailout recipients is in fact a guy from Great Britain, who will recieve 33 million dollar (US) as part of his "compensation" package? And how HE will maintain a million dollar a month paycheck indefinately as a "consultant"?

THAT'S WHERE THE MONEY WENT! Bush isn't just going to pardon all of his cronies at zero-hour. He's going to also make them rich beyond their wildest dreams.

Anyone else remember how when Walmart started building stores, they used to pride themselves on "Made in America"? Used to be one of their slogans. They had the big smiley faces on the floors you could stomp on as you walked through the automatic doors, and for a time you really thought you were doing this country a favor.
.
It's almost to the point, now, that you need a Passport just to run in and quick grab a supply of toilet paper..

So much for "free trade"

How sad. I wonder what they'll do with the empty space. I hate big empty buildings just sitting around. Like the SuperValue in Walworth. What a waste.
I'm glad there are a few Woodmans in the area (Beloit, Janesville, Rockford) thats where we do all of our shopping. Very affordable and locally owned.
.
.
And "buy local" doesnt mean the grocery store in your town. It means buy products (meat, cheese, produce) from local growers. Kraft Mac-n-cheese bought at Walmart is no different than buying it at Sentry. If you want to "buy local" go to Basics in Janesville, or Bushel and Peck's in Beloit.

I haven't grocery shopped in Delavan but I never cared for the Pick N' Save in Beloit the couple of times I visited it.
.
I used to shop at the Sentry stores in Janesville. Their Sentry brand tortilla chips and mircrowave popcorn were better tasting and cheaper than any of the name brands, but then the stores dropped the Sentry brand. They use to have the greatest kringle pastry but they dropped the brand that was good and went with a gummy extremely over-frosted brand like the other groceries in Janesville have. I liked their in-house loaves of Italian bread, but for the longest time they were sold out by the time I got there after work, so I gradually stopped shopping at Sentry.
.
Logli is pricy compared to Woodmans, but they have the best bakery and deli in town, so I shop Woodmans, which seems to have the best prices, for the bulk of my groceries and Logli for select items.

I'm not a fan of Walmart except when I can't sleep and I go there and browse...but to everyone who is saying that they are forcing businesses to close, I think you're mistaken. If so many people didn't shop there, they wouldn't be closing up anyone else's business. The people in your town that shop there are to blame for other businesses dropping, not Walmart itself

Buy American.........do not shop at China Mart.
It's time to bring back "Made in USA". China Mart doesn't care about America, or Jobs, or People, it's just about profits for that company.
Look at the back of the packages when your shopping. Do you really want to support a country that exports wheat tainted with rat poison, (pet food recall), or fake wine, children's toys laced with GHB (date rape drug), or how about the Maxt***/Seag** hard drives shipped with a virus that collects passwords and sends the results to an IP address in China.
In China, you can export anything to anyone as long as you have enough money to grease the wheels. It doesn't matter if it is safe, moral, or ethical......just profitable.
When they get caught in a recall, they just change the name of the company, and back to business as usual.
In America, manufacturers are responsible for their actions.
What was said last night in the debates?
We have a $700 billion dollar trade deficit with China?
This is our fault!
American workers could be receiving this income and paying their mortgages.
American CEO's that outsource should be exported.
Please do not shop at China-Mart....our jobs depend on it.

Shop at Wal-Mart, you must be kidding!!! I went with my daughter grocery shopping one time and I noticed they don't even carry the major brands I purchase. Why shop there? Because they are cheap, cheap!!! Their meat stinks!! Their overal quality of general merchandise is terrible. Received a Xmas present from Wal-Mart several years ago and the garment only lasted through 3 washings. I can do better at Sentry than any other store; plus I use coupons all the time. I know Sentry's rotation of food products and will shop according. We had a Sentry years ago here in Delavan until Community Bank took over the site. I really miss that store. So friendly. Now go to the Sentry store in either Elkhorn or Walworth. I'll take Sentry over any other store any day. How are you to shop at Wal-Mart if they don't carry certain brands you have used and trusted for years??? Answer me that!!! Furthermore, Wal_Mart moves into an area and forces out other smaller stores. You can have your Wal-Mart and Super Wal-Marts!!!!

It wasn't the Delavan Pick 'n' Save that went out of business, it was the Delavan Piggly Wiggly. The owner retired or was forced to sell to the Stinebrinks, and they took the opportunity to switch their franchise for the other store. This is actually more like a merger. They just didn't want to have two stores in the same city.
