NO MORE FAST FOOD AND NO MORE FRANCHISES!!
And yes...Panera is fast-food & a franchise.
How about another Payday Loan business? We never seem to have enough of these around here. **sarcastic font**
On What word would you use to describe Janesville?
Posted on November 9 at 12:58 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
Archaic
For the young working professionals, Janesville is a dust collector. It's especially bad if you don't have children. It has minimal to offer and does nothing to entice us to come here. Most have very little incentive to stay if/when they do come and are constantly looking to relocate elsewhere. We're definitely NOT spending our paychecks here. Dine at another franchise? No thanks. Janesville Mall? Ha! Total joke. I use to be optimistic that this community was capable of embracing change and things would get better. Unfortunately, things have only gotten worse. And no...it's not an "economy problem", it is the mind-set of "If it's not broke, don't fix it" and the fear of changing status-quo. I've spoke to several city officials that maintain optimism towards moving the city out of the 1980's. It's just unfortunate that I'll (and many, many more like me) can't wait around another 10-15 years to see it happen.
On Can you identify with squeeze on middle class?

@Wonders.... First- Congrats! You should be proud of your accomplishments. Second- I agree that we are in charge of our own lives, have to live with decisions that we make and if we don't like it, then change the factors in which you have control over.....What is so unique to our current economic and social environment is that the factors we can change and/or control are far outnumber by those that we have no control over and can not make an impact on to change therefore leading to this sense of hopelessness, frustration, and fatigue(physically, mentally & emotionally. It's quite natural for one to become extremely pessimistic.
On Can you identify with squeeze on middle class?

Well said, Greg. The erosion of social mobility amongst the middle-class (or what I like to refer to as the working-class) is incredibly disheartening and leaves one feeling hopeless at times. I, like many other 30-somethings, built my future the "right way". Went to college, quickly established a career, saved up & purchased a home, started to build a retirement, lived within my means and started to pay down debt (college loans, etc) & used my discretionary incomes to enjoy life a little and help support others within our community (dined at local restuarants, shopped at local stores, donate to charity/organizations, etc).
And for what?? So we could continue to struggle financially? To be told the investments were pointless? To have the "light at the end of the tunnel" cemented shut? Wages are decreasing rapidly then throw in increased health care costs, gas prices, grocery store bills, various new user fees (i.e. Wheel Tax, etc) and my discretionary income quickly evaporates. The ultimate kick in the gut was hearing from a local appraisal company that my well-cared for home with many smart updates (roof, etc) is worth 30% less than it was 5 years ago. I'm not "under water", I'm drowning. So yes...not only am I feeling "squeezed" but also suffocated, beaten and demoralized.

Celebrating? Rejoicing?? Hope in the schools??? Well maintained streets????
You ask, "What do you think?"
Well, Steve, I think that I want some of whatever drug or medication you're on so I, too, can be blind to reality.
On How will you celebrate Earth Day?

Every year I plant pansies & violets on Earth Day. It's always perfect timing for them. I make up several pots/planters and share with my neighbors. I also hope to get out on the bike trail if the weather cooperates and do a little cleaning up while enjoying our local treasure.

RAGE....SMILE...RAGE....SMILE
I've got some serious mixed emotions here. Walker's policies attacked the working-poor public employees. We are seeing educated, hard working, established, public safety employees being offered food stamps because they're the "bread winners" and their income for their family has dropped low enough to become eligible. Then we have Walker pawns (i.e. managers, directors, supervisors, etc)that are already making six figures and they are getting pay increases and bonuses. How is this good fiscal policy? How is this humane? (RAGE)
Then, a moment of sunshine, Gotta love the timing of this. This is going to make for some really, really angry public employees. This is going to make independents question Walker. And the best part....they will all vote!!! (SMILE)
This is going to get really interesting.....

On Sidewalks back on city agenda

I find hypocrisy to be so entertaining. It's interesting that the Gazette & the majority of the folks participating in these comment sections repeatedly ridiculed City Council candidates for participating in partisan politics, being public employees, signing the recall petition, etc because allegedly...They were too narrow-minded, couldn't possibly be representative of the City as a whole, and were merely pawns of the Unions. Yet...at least two of the newcomers made their first order of business as councilmembers to be sidewalks???? Or essentially political payback!?!?! Will someone please give Fowler,Marklein Builders, the "Sensible Sidewalk Committee" & their large bank accounts an acronym so we can just call a "duck a duck" or shall I say....call a pawn a pawn.

On Are your sidewalks icy?
Posted on February 11 at 1:17 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
I couldn't disagree with you more, Greg. It's winter in WI. As a runner and a dog walker, slippery conditions are expected and I venture out at my own risk. Even those who are diligent about getting their sidewalks cleared are not immuned from the weather conditions we've faced over the past few weeks. And as for "suing" anyone, good luck. Unless you're able to prove a property owner was irresponsibility negligent to an extreme when you fell and got hurt (ie it's happened multiple times, there's a pattern, etc), very few jurors/court systems have awarded anything to the injured. Why? Because it's a typical winter in WI and commonsense tells you that the elements are less than ideal when you engage in outdoor activities this time of year. Just my opinion though....
