On State budget cuts roll downhill

Posted on May 7 at 5:15 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Sure hope California knows what they are getting in this guy. Of all the states, California is the worst off and they are getting a guy that refuses to admit that the money tree is bare. It is easy to manage a budget if there is an endless supply of money. I am sure he did some good things for Janesville, but he really dropped the ball on dealing with the union. Again, the unions don't care about the welfare of Janesville or the employers in general, they are only out to get as much as they can before the employer goes broke.

On Tax credit as alternative to school vouchers?

analertcitizen; First I would suggest that you do not have the ability to read into my comments and know my history. I was emplyed well over 40 years, so I probably subsidized your children or grandchildrens education. Second, I never said public education is terrible, kindly reread my post. What I am saying is If a person must contribute to education, let them determine which school it goes to. Whether it be religious or not is no ones business but the parents.

On Students from needy families place burden on schools

Touching article, but let's be honest...there are people that work their butts off, try as hard as possible and still struggle to climb out of poverty and there those that look for the easy way out and expect others to pay for their children. The easy way out is to live a life of dependence on others while the government takes care of them and their ever growing family.
I often see what I consider to be abuses of public assistance at the stores, but I don't know their whole story so I will withhold my comments on that topic. However, I feel strongly that we are not holding some parents accountable for raising and nurturing their children and the government keeps lowering the threshold for assistance which means taking from my pocket and putting into their pockets. Where does it end? When we are all brought down to their level of living? We need to stop this cycle of constant handouts to those that can do and should do something about their way of life. They may not be the most desirable jobs, but there are jobs out there. Not the kids fault but some of these parents need a "Come to Jesus meeting".

On Tax credit as alternative to school vouchers?

If you feel strongly that public education is the best your child can receive, go for it. Why are you so afraid of competition in the form of vouchers or a tax credits? Many of us don't have the same admiration for public education as you do and we choose an alternate education for our children and it may be religious based. How is that any of your business? We are being forced to pay for a system that we don't believe is the most effective and want the money we spend toward it to go to the school of our choice. Pretty simple, it's our money that gets tossed into the tax pool and we want to get the most education for our children from it. You think maybe that public education has always been the nest egg of the liberals and the conservatives are getting fed up with the indoctrination that is being taught to their children could be a reason for the push to split away from public education?

On Appeals court wants Supreme Court to take up Act 10 case

Kia; I agree with your reasoning for and timing of a referendum, however, I would throw in that it is best if the voters are informed of the issues and not voting for or against based on party affiliation. Many people on both sides blindly vote their party whether it makes sense or not. The hatred toward Gov. Walker and Pres. Obama based on their ideology needs to end. And now it is spilling over to the Wis Supreme Court. Enough already!

On Beloit Turner School Board: Open enrollment helped sink referendum

Now that I have dried my eyes from the previous posters, it is apparent to me that many voters saw some real problems with the referendum. If you folks think that larger schools will offer the opportunity that you desire for your children, open enroll them in Beloit or Janesville schools, myself, I will keep hope that vouchers will become a reality. I will not support giving addtional tax dollars for a school that I don't believe is necessary. If you decide that you are willing to spend additional tax dollars to support out of district students, that is your choice, but don't be so closed minded to think there are not alternate options to spending 28 million dollars.

Thisyear,

You fail to understand the issues we the TAXPAYERS bring to the board...Why should we pay for a new school when the existing school is adequate to support our children? Bigger is NOT always better. With minimal increases in revenue, we could add additional courses/programs without the huge open enrollment. I do realize what open enrollment brings to the district, but I also know there are cuts or improvements that can be made to the district without overwhelming our school with out of district students.

Mr. Clark, Mr. Shear and especially Mr. Olson, fail to understand that many Town of Beloit residents refuse to support a school that is necessary only because of open enrollment . The current school space is adequate for the TSD residents. You also fail to understand that people resent the fact that only the Town of Beloit residents will see increases in their taxes to pay for this school(needed primarily for open enrollment),that if built the operating expenses would surely increase, we don't agree with your projections of growth in the Town of Beloit, we don't see any significant growth in businesses to the area, many enjoy the smaller school concept, we believe there should be more focus on academics with less focus on sports, there is room to make budget cuts in the existing budget (contrary to what Mr. Olson and Mr. McCarthy may feel)and many hope that in the not too distant future there will be vouchers where we can use public school dollars to sent our children to the school of our choice. I have also heard comments that the committee was stacked with people that were biased in their decision and it was not a true cross hatch of people that could represent the Town of Beloit. It is easy to select a group that will recommend what you want recommended.

John, don’t you think we need a federal budget or are that off the table because it is an area that is controlled by your party? You are so predictable in picking your topics and the way you present your arguments. When you taught, were your discussions open or were they as one-sided as you present in your blog?
These ideas presented by Obama and the Democrats will not make the country safer nor would any of these measures prevented the tragedies that occurred. Using the parents to lobby for passage is like them prostituting for Obama. Getting on national stage and showing the rest of the country just how little thinking you are able to perform on your own. I wonder if the Democrats wrote some of the comments from the parents. This comment was made from a man that lost a loved one it the school and was along the lines of … (Guns don’t kill people, people do…then we need to start doing background checks on the people). Guess what Mr. Critical Thinker; the man who killed the children did NOT buy the guns he used. His mother did and they were all purchased legally, he simply took them, killed his mother and then went on a rampage to kill children. All of this is tragic, but NONE of the proposed changes in the gun laws would have stopped this from happening! The Democrats are the puppet masters using their ability to manipulate people into action without any resistance or thinking what is being proposed. Stop using emotion and use logic in your decision making!
