K, I've wished for a Janesville Brennan's for years now! But it makes a nice destination when I'm in Madison or Monroe. Last year they had a delicious melon that was a cross between a canteloupe and a honeydew that I served with berries and walnuts... ok, looks like I just talked myself into going to Monroe this weekend :P

Swing through the Brennan's Market in Monroe or Madison. Create a meal of varied cheeses, a bit of sausage, sliced apples, melons, berries and grapes, crusty nutty bread and some chilled sauvignon blanc, prosecco, or amber beer. It seems simple but takes a lot of nice, companionable prep time, and is very satisfying for patio dining or movie night on the couch.

Who does the 5-year old son belong to? Ostenson or Hartin?

I find this amusing, and actually think it's a great way to get the best stories retold. I've always thought Jane Eyre would lend itself well to vampires, and perhaps du Maurier's Rebecca could be a fitting werewolf tale! On second thought, no -- crazed women locked in secret rooms and creepy housekeepers are just as scary as vamps and wolves. Maybe we should stick to Austen, and zombies.

I make the journey every two weeks from Janesville to Sorg's for "good meats." But lately, I've been hankering a trip to the mushroom store - River Valley Ranch Mushroom Farm in Slades Corners (Burlington) - I haven't been in awhile and hope it's still there.

Janesville's citywides are the third Saturday of every month, April thru September. (May and June usually have the largest offering). Footville organizes one or two as well, but I don't know the dates.

I miss Milton Antique Mall, though I admit I haven't antiqued in a couple years. Is the antique mall still open on Delavan's Main St.? If so, that is a very pleasant place to shop - nice variety of vendors. And there was one in Walworth as well where I found a few favorite things.

aames,
This is on Wisconsin Public Radio today, and I thought you might be interested in listening or picking up the podcast from the wpr.org website:
10:00 PM Veronica Rueckert - 07/31E
Veronica talks with a woman who turned a vacant city lot into a thriving farm... complete with chickens, turkeys, pigs, and all kinds of vegetables. A look at how urban meets rural in the most surprising ways. Guest: Novella Carpenter, author, "Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer" (Penguin Press).
