I loved living downtown... but parking was a living nightmare even with emergency parking areas.

On Janesville plows turning to the side streets

The plow drivers on my street are on point. It was also nice of the neighbors to finally get their cars off the street so the plows can clear up properly.

On Dress code for Janesville school employees proposed

Posted on November 10 at 1:43 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I don't understand. Teachers I have had over the last 15 years have never been inappropriately dressed. Gym coaches were dressed in appropriate athletic clothing, classroom instructors ranged between modest business casual to sportcoat and tie with very modest hemlines and coverage, and my instructors in college are all about the business attire. What are these teachers wearing that is so inappropriate? When did this begin? Maybe the difference is the age of the instructors?

I don't get any trick or treaters in my building, sadly. I love handing out treats and seeing all the costumes but you rarely see kids going door to door in an apartment complex.

Luckee_Clover: THANK YOU. I'm glad someone besides me understands Samhain/Halloween!

I would have carved pumpkins but the local vandals have been out smashing any they find since about late September when the first fall decorations started going up. It's sad that people can't even have a pumpkin last more than 16 hours on the front steps.

On Increased need creates growing wait list for Janesville homeless shelter

"Actually, it's Walker taking office who resulted in homelessness, bankruptcies and the loss of talented workers."

Actually, there has been homelessness, job loss and bankruptcies since before Walker... and there will be long after Walker.

Walker isn't cool, but you can't blame everything wrong in the world on one person.

On Curriculum change could spell end for city bee

Posted on September 16 at 10:28 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Interesting how kids aren't tested on spelling anymore. I got regular spelling tests all through elementary school, represented my school at the city spelling bee, had to know how to spell in middle and high school, and even get regular spelling tests IN COLLEGE courses.

I understand that my time in elementary and middle school was way back in the stone age of the 80's and 90's (hehe) but don't lower the bar by doing away with the spelling bee. I remember how much of a big deal it was in 5th grade to see the class winnowed down to the few who would go on to the bee. Don't give the kids another reason to RiT3 LyK Dis. Plz? ;)

On Aug. 31 deadline for Wis. do not call list

Posted on August 20 at 4:02 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

The no call list doesn't do any good when the government doesn't have to abide by it. The surveys, political recordings and volunteer call centers are the most obnoxious. I have an app that blocks unwanted calls and texts instead and enters the information into a database so you can look up who it is or leave a comment for others getting the same calls. It's nice for when you get those robodialers that call every five minutes and never leave a message. I just set it to pick up and hang up once I have a number on my blacklist.

On Have you considered cutting the cord?

I cut off cable tv about three years ago. What I get in on the rabbit ears & TV tuner is enough for me. I get local programming and PBS. If there's anything else I want to watch, I have DVDs, Netflix and the internet.

Since I ditched digital cable, I find that I'm not scheduling my life around TV. I plan for my two hour-long programs when the new season starts but aside from that, I maybe log less than 8 hours of television a week. The local channels I get are a bit strange sometimes with all of the "retro" programming they offer, but the "CoolTV" music channel is alright because it actually airs nothing but videos.
I also like that I get three different PBS stations. One is your standard PBS with childrens shows, NOVA, documentaries, etc. Another is called the Wisconsin channel that airs history programs and Wisconsin-based educational/cultural programming. The last channel is called Create and shows cooking, travel, and craft-type shows.

I don't think you could convince me to go back to paying for TV programming.
